Police were responding to reports of a suspicious person attempting to enter vehicles and a <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/suspect-breaks-into-two-homes-shot-by-homeowner\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fort-wayne-homeowner-reckless-homicide-shooting\" title=\"Fort Wayne Homeowner Charged After Shooting Suspicious Person\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7651\">home when dispatchers received word that the homeowner had shot<\/a> someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fort Wayne homeowner arrested in fatal shooting of man accused of trying to break in WANE 15 at 6\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n1HwWWMS9WM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officers found Taylor suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. They rendered aid before he was transported to a hospital, where he later died. The Allen County Coroner\u2019s Office identified him and ruled his death a homicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pickens remained at the scene and surrendered his Glock .45-caliber handgun, according to court records obtained by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.21alivenews.com\/2026\/09\/08\/fort-wayne-homeowner-accused-shooting-killing-unarmed-suspicious-man-outside-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fort-wayne-homeowner-reckless-homicide-shooting\" title=\"Fort Wayne Homeowner Charged After Shooting Suspicious Person\">21Alive<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pickens reportedly told investigators that he woke up and learned someone was attempting to enter vehicles in the neighborhood. He armed himself, left his home and confronted Taylor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surveillance footage allegedly showed Taylor wandering around the neighborhood for an extended period. <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/austin-police-chief-slams-open-carry-allows-criminals-to-defy-law-with-impunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fort-wayne-homeowner-reckless-homicide-shooting\" title=\"Fort Wayne Homeowner Charged After Shooting Suspicious Person\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7650\">Police said he attempted to open<\/a> Pickens\u2019 screen door, walked away and later returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately before the shooting, Pickens was reportedly standing near his parked vehicle when Taylor approached from the driver\u2019s side. The recording captured Pickens yelling, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d and \u201cBack up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pickens told investigators that Taylor continued moving toward him, so he fired once. Taylor\u2019s vehicle was towed because his license was suspended, and officers told him to walk home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/graphic-footage-officer-fatally-shoots-man-pretending-to-draw-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fort-wayne-homeowner-reckless-homicide-shooting\" title=\"Fort Wayne Homeowner Charged After Shooting Suspicious Person\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7648\">Police do not believe the shooting<\/a> was justified under Indiana\u2019s self-defense law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indiana generally does not require a person to retreat when deadly force is otherwise justified. However, that does not make every shooting of an approaching person lawful. <a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/codes\/indiana\/title-35\/article-41\/chapter-3\/section-35-41-3-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fort-wayne-homeowner-reckless-homicide-shooting\" title=\"Fort Wayne Homeowner Charged After Shooting Suspicious Person\">Indiana law<\/a> still requires a reasonable belief that deadly force is necessary to prevent serious bodily injury, stop a forcible felony or prevent an unlawful entry or attack on a home, its curtilage or an occupied vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Detective Brian Martin wrote that Pickens \u201cknowingly armed himself and voluntarily exited the safety of his residence to confront Taylor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That decision appears to be central to the charge. Investigators allege that Taylor was unarmed and had not presented a threat serious enough to <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/video-shows-the-emotional-toll-that-comes-with-using-justifiable-deadly-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fort-wayne-homeowner-reckless-homicide-shooting\" title=\"Fort Wayne Homeowner Charged After Shooting Suspicious Person\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7652\">justify deadly force<\/a> when Pickens fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pickens has been charged, but he has not been convicted.
