Swimsuit, hat, sunglasses, reading material, and my camera. One of the non-typical items, however, made quite a difference. Of those two, I&#8217;ve used the 10x28s the most. Measuring 4.8\u201d wide and 5\u201d long, the 10x28s fit neatly into the small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/product\/235578\/rei-co-op-ruckpack-18-pack\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"vortex-triumph-10x28-hd-review\" title=\"Vortex Triumph 10x28 HD Review: Small Glass, Big Value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REI backpack<\/a> I typically carry on day trips. Plus, with a weight of only 12.8 ounces, I barely notice the addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ease of portability is the main reason I get so much use out of them. The most used tool often isn&#8217;t the best tool for the job; it&#8217;s the tool you have with you. I use the 10X28s more than the 12X50s in the same way the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4qXUwqt\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"vortex-triumph-10x28-hd-review\" title=\"Vortex Triumph 10x28 HD Review: Small Glass, Big Value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leatherman<\/a> in my pocket gets more use than the pliers in my garage. Right off the bat, it wasn&#8217;t performance or features; it was convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s really the appeal of compact binoculars like the Triumph 10&#215;28 HD. They&#8217;re small enough to toss in a daypack without much thought, which means they&#8217;re far more likely to be around when something interesting catches your attention. And sometimes that something turns out to be a whole lot more interesting than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-90-vortex-binoculars-uncovered-a-shipwreck\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How $90 Vortex Binoculars Uncovered a Shipwreck<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A great example of this is seen in my recent trip to the Dominican. Sharing a checked bag with my wife means she doesn\u2019t get to bring a different pair of shoes for each day, and I can&#8217;t bring every gadget I might want. I scaled down my first <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/top-five-pieces-gear-first-aid-kit\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"vortex-triumph-10x28-hd-review\" title=\"Vortex Triumph 10x28 HD Review: Small Glass, Big Value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aid kit<\/a> to just the basics. Probably don&#8217;t need my <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/prepping-101-35-long-distance-ham-radio-sends-morse-wandroid-ap\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"vortex-triumph-10x28-hd-review\" title=\"Vortex Triumph 10x28 HD Review: Small Glass, Big Value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HAM radio<\/a>. I left my third camera lens at home. And, you knew it was coming, I just brought the 10x28s and left the 12x50s behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Binoculars aren\u2019t typically on my packing list for tropical vacations, but I am glad they made the cut. It wasn\u2019t even a full day before I put them to use. While reclining on the beach with my lovely, she spotted something far offshore. She lit up with excitement at the prospect of investigating the unknown object. Lifting the binos to her eyes, she focused the image and exclaimed, \u201cI think it\u2019s a shipwreck\u201d. And a shipwreck it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That alone made packing the Vortex Triumph binoculars worthwhile. Instead of spending the afternoon wondering what was sitting offshore, we had a way to get a much better look. The rest sank deeper out or has been worn down by the waves.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April of 1978, a Soviet tanker, the Astron, ran aground off the coast of Punta Cana. It was hauling a shipment of corn to Cuba when a storm hurled it onto the reef, marking its untimely end. While a seemingly simple incident, speculation still swirls since there were no storms recorded at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the days that followed, we continued to use the binos on the beach. Watching shipping vessels, birds, parasailers, and sailboats. It added quite a bit of fun to our leisure time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of those activities demanded expensive glass or a giant set of binoculars. We just needed something that was easy to carry, quick to use, and capable of bringing distant objects into view. Focusing solely on the glass, you can notice a bit of distortion near the edge of the image. Also, the small 28mm objective lens can make for a darker image compared to larger models. But once again, a darker pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-eberlestock-recon-modular-bino-pack-the-new-favorite-reviewed\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"vortex-triumph-10x28-hd-review\" title=\"Vortex Triumph 10x28 HD Review: Small Glass, Big Value\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7858\">binos in your pack<\/a> is better than the optimal pair in your truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are the trade-offs worth understanding with budget binoculars. The compact 28mm objective lenses help keep the Triumphs small and easy to carry, but they don&#8217;t gather as much light as the larger 50mm objectives on the 12x50HD. If you&#8217;re after maximum brightness, especially later in the evening, the larger model has an advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the distortion, it&#8217;s there if you go looking for it. You can see it in the image of the shipping vessel, although it is less distracting in actual use than that photograph might suggest. This includes fully coated glass to improve light transmission and a nitrogen-purged body to eliminate fogging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the optical coatings and the compact construction, the Triumph 10&#215;28 HD makes a reasonable case for itself as an everyday set of travel binoculars. It&#8217;s not trying to outshine every larger pair of optics on the market. It just needs to deliver a useful image without becoming one more bulky item you decide to leave behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-vortex-triumph-10x28-hd-vs-12x50-hd-which-wins\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vortex Triumph 10&#215;28 HD vs. 12&#215;50 HD: Which Wins?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest difference between these two Triumph HD binoculars comes down to how I actually use them. The compact 10x28s get carried more often because they&#8217;re small, lightweight, and convenient. The larger 12x50s are better suited to situations where the additional magnification and larger objective lenses are useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the 12x50s don&#8217;t match my needs as well as their little brother, they also proved to be a quality set of optics. I have used them for calling hits at the range and for leisure time at the lake, scanning the opposite shoreline. For throwing a pair of binos in a backpack before heading out for the day, the 10x28s remain my pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With both models having their strengths and weaknesses, it&#8217;s up to you to decide which suits your use case best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-vortex-triumph-10x28-hd-price-a-lot-of-binos-for-90\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vortex Triumph 10&#215;28 HD Price: A Lot of Binos for $90<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of what makes these little Vortex binoculars appealing is the price.
