Break-In\">WSPA<\/a><\/em>, deputies were called to a home on Cherokee Circle in Chesnee at about 2 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. When they arrived, they found a <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/man-dead-following-nypd-chokehold-altercation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"south-carolina-homeowner-shoots-intruder-chesnee\" title=\"SC Homeowner Shoots Intruder During 2 A.M. Break-In\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7604\">man dead<\/a> from multiple gunshot wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"19-year-old shot, killed after Upstate home invasion; homeowner not charged\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/98hjrqc7ISs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities identified him as 19-year-old Xavier Felix Rivera-Goucher of Campobello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators say Rivera-Goucher entered the home during the early morning hours, apparently through a back door. The homeowner encountered him inside the residence and fired a weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two residents were home at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One especially important detail is that authorities said Rivera-Goucher had no known relationship with either resident. Investigators reportedly do not believe he entered the home thinking someone else lived there, either. The homeowners had been at the residence for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point, investigators have not said why Rivera-Goucher chose that particular house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spartanburg County Sheriff\u2019s Office said no <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/homeowner-charged-with-manslaughter-forced-to-surrender-firearms-for-shooting-alleged-burglar\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"south-carolina-homeowner-shoots-intruder-chesnee\" title=\"SC Homeowner Shoots Intruder During 2 A.M. Break-In\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7603\">charges have been filed against the homeowner<\/a>, and <em>WSPA<\/em> reported that investigators do not expect charges. They still have to determine what happened, document the scene, interview everyone involved, and make sure the evidence matches the initial account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, the coroner ruled Rivera-Goucher\u2019s death a homicide. That word can confuse people, but it is not the same thing as a criminal charge. \u201cHomicide\u201d is a manner-of-death classification used when one person\u2019s actions cause another person\u2019s death. It does not answer whether the shooting was lawful, unlawful, justified, or criminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said Rivera-Goucher may have been acting erratically before the break-in. The coroner told <em>WSPA<\/em> that investigators are looking into whether mental-health issues played a role. That may eventually help explain what happened, but it does not change the terrifying position the homeowners found themselves in at 2 in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also a reminder that home-defense planning is not just about owning a firearm. It is about having a plan, securing entry points, knowing where family members are, communicating with 911, and understanding the aftermath if the worst happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Chesnee homeowners, what began as an apparent intrusion by a stranger ended in seconds.
