But one of the easiest ways for a responsible gun owner to get blindsided may be sitting at the bottom of a range bag, briefcase, or center console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The New York Ammo Trap: The Law That Catches Gun Owners Off Guard\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/evH35DEFrjo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attorney Peter Tilem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tilemlawfirm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-city-ammunition-laws-ammo-trap\" title=\"New York Ammo Trap: One Bullet Can Mean Charges\">recently<\/a> put out a reminder that deserves the attention of every New York gun owner, and anyone traveling through New York City: a single loose round of handgun ammunition can create a real legal problem inside the five boroughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not an exaggeration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York State requires an ammunition background check when ammunition is purchased from a seller in the state. The legal duty to run that check falls on the seller.  And state law also requires commercial ammunition transfers to go through a dealer or registered ammunition seller. That is already more regulation than most gun owners deal with elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But New York City has its own added layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under <a href=\"https:\/\/codelibrary.amlegal.com\/codes\/newyorkcity\/latest\/NYCadmin\/0-0-0-6218?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-city-ammunition-laws-ammo-trap\" title=\"New York Ammo Trap: One Bullet Can Mean Charges\">NYC Administrative Code \u00a7 10-131<\/a>, a person who is not authorized to possess a pistol or revolver within the city cannot possess pistol or revolver ammunition. The code also restricts a person <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/rebirth-rampant-colt-combat-unit-9mm-full-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-city-ammunition-laws-ammo-trap\" title=\"New York Ammo Trap: One Bullet Can Mean Charges\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7595\">authorized to possess a handgun<\/a> of a particular caliber from possessing handgun ammunition of a different caliber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The penalty is not a parking ticket. A violation of that ammunition subdivision is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $1,000 fine, up to a year in jail, or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the part that catches people off guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A forgotten <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sig-p365-vs-glock-43-vs-sw-shield\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-city-ammunition-laws-ammo-trap\" title=\"New York Ammo Trap: One Bullet Can Mean Charges\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7596\">9mm<\/a> round in the bottom of a backpack is not a gun. It is not a loaded magazine. It may be something a traveler did not even know was there. TSA finds a loose cartridge during screening, Port Authority police get involved.  And suddenly a traveler is dealing with missed flights, a possible summons, and a return trip to New York for court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outcome will depend on the facts of the case, the person\u2019s legal status, and how authorities handle it. But the headache alone is enough to make this worth taking seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rule is specific to New York City. It does not automatically apply once you leave the city limits. Buffalo, Albany, and Islip are not New York City. That does not mean ammo laws disappear elsewhere in New York, though. State purchase and transfer rules still apply.  Along with any other <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/saf-sues-illinois-state-police-failure-ccl-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-city-ammunition-laws-ammo-trap\" title=\"New York Ammo Trap: One Bullet Can Mean Charges\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7594\">applicable state<\/a>, local, or federal restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical takeaway is simple: check your bags before traveling through JFK or LaGuardia. Check the backpack you use for range days. Check the briefcase, vehicle console, luggage pockets.  And the little zippered compartment you have not opened in six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better yet, keep range gear and travel gear separate. Using the same carry-on for both is an easy way to overlook a loose round, an empty magazine, or another item that may be perfectly ordinary at home but creates a problem at an airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One important caveat: this is a general warning, not personal legal advice. New York and New York City firearms rules are technical.  And whether a particular license, caliber, firearm, or travel situation is lawful can turn on details.
