However, it would have sharply limited what Virginia residents could purchase or transfer after it took effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gun-rights organizations quickly challenged the restrictions in several state and federal courts. Judges blocked enforcement while those challenges moved forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest order came from a Lancaster County judge in the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oag.state.va.us\/media-center\/news-releases\/3099-stay-order-issued-in-virginias-assault-weapons-ban-case\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-assault-weapons-ban-paused-scotus\" title=\"Virginia AR and Magazine Ban Stays on Ice Pending SCOTUS Review\"><em>John Crump, et al. v. Jeffrey S. Katz<\/em>. <\/a>That judge joined three other state courts and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in putting the litigation on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-does-on-hold-actually-mean\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does \u201cOn Hold\u201d Actually Mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the legal language can make a simple situation sound more complicated than it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The courts have paused the Virginia cases while the Supreme Court reviews similar bans from Illinois and Connecticut. The justices are expected to hear arguments during the upcoming term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, Virginia\u2019s challenged restrictions will not be enforced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/zco-zc210-review-san-1-2-10x30\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-assault-weapons-ban-paused-scotus\" title=\"Virginia AR and Magazine Ban Stays on Ice Pending SCOTUS Review\">ZCO ZC210 Review: The 2-10x Do-It-All Scope<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former U.S. Attorney John Fishwick told <em>ABC 13<\/em> that gun owners do not need to panic about violating the paused law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis law is not going to be enforced until we get the final legal answer,\u201d Fishwick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not mean the Virginia law has been permanently struck down. It means everyone is waiting for the Supreme Court to provide a clearer answer about whether bans on commonly owned semiautomatic firearms and magazines violate the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/people-book-celebrates-gun-owners-across-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-assault-weapons-ban-paused-scotus\" title=\"Virginia AR and Magazine Ban Stays on Ice Pending SCOTUS Review\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7538\">Second Amendment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once that happens, the Virginia cases can move forward under whatever constitutional standard the Supreme Court establishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-gun-shops-are-stuck-watching-the-courts\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gun Shops Are Stuck Watching the Courts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith said the constant changes have forced employees to spend their evenings studying new laws and court decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to do a lot of research, a lot of nighttime study,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers are confused, too. Smith said the store receives daily calls about suppressors, handguns, magazines and other changing firearm regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That confusion is understandable. A law can pass, take effect, get blocked and then sit in court for months or years. <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/colorado-sb-25-003-impact-gun-stores\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-assault-weapons-ban-paused-scotus\" title=\"Virginia AR and Magazine Ban Stays on Ice Pending SCOTUS Review\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7540\">Gun shops<\/a> must somehow keep their inventory and sales practices legal through every turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selling a lawful product today can feel like a risk when nobody knows what the rules may look like next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-when-will-gun-owners-get-an-answer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Will Gun Owners Get an Answer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fishwick said the Supreme Court could hear arguments this fall but may not issue its decision until the end of its term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major rulings often arrive in June. That means a final answer may not come until June 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fishwick also offered his own prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think they will find that Virginia\u2019s law is unconstitutional,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones sees it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oag.state.va.us\/media-center\/news-releases\/3099-stay-order-issued-in-virginias-assault-weapons-ban-case?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-assault-weapons-ban-paused-scotus\" title=\"Virginia AR and Magazine Ban Stays on Ice Pending SCOTUS Review\">differently<\/a>. His office says the restrictions are constitutional and has promised to continue defending them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Virginia gun owners, the brass-tacks answer is simple. The ban is not being enforced right now, and retailers have returned the affected products to their shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this is a pause, not the final buzzer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court\u2019s coming decisions could determine whether Virginia\u2019s restrictions return, disappear for good or head back into another
