This time, the spotlight is on the Joyce Foundation, a Chicago-based private foundation with deep pockets and decades of involvement in gun-control research and advocacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of Gun Rights Insights is pretty simple. Beatrice Joyce Kean, the daughter of an Iowa lumber executive, later left most of her estate to the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the foundation describes itself as a \u201cprivate, nonpartisan philanthropy\u201d focused on racial equity and economic mobility in the Great Lakes region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gun policy is also a major part of its work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Joyce Foundation openly lists \u201cGun <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/5-dumbest-recommendations-prevent-gun-violence-stop-mass-shootings\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"joyce-foundation-gun-control-funding\" title=\"NSSF Exposes Joyce Foundation\u2019s Gun-Control Funding\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7536\">Violence Prevention<\/a> &amp; Justice Reform\u201d among its primary funding areas. It supports research, advocacy organizations and government programs built around firearm restrictions and violence-prevention policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The foundation reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joycefdn.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"joyce-foundation-gun-control-funding\" title=\"NSSF Exposes Joyce Foundation\u2019s Gun-Control Funding\">$1.3 billion in assets in 2024<\/a>. That year, it made $63.5 million in qualifying charitable distributions across its different programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF says Joyce has poured nearly $100 million into gun-control efforts over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-obama-and-the-joyce-foundation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Obama and the Joyce Foundation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former President Barack Obama served on the Joyce Foundation\u2019s board from 1994 until 2002, before his rise in national politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obama later supported a renewed ban on commonly owned semiautomatic <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ak-47-hog-blaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"joyce-foundation-gun-control-funding\" title=\"NSSF Exposes Joyce Foundation\u2019s Gun-Control Funding\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7533\">rifles and nationwide background checks for private firearm<\/a> transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other people connected to his administration have also held positions with the foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current Joyce Foundation Board Chair Margot Rogers previously served as chief of staff to former Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Vice Chair Tracey Meares served on Obama\u2019s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Board member Cecilia Mu\u00f1oz spent eight years in the Obama administration, including five years leading the White House Domestic Policy Council. Former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett previously served on the foundation\u2019s board as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those connections do not prove that the foundation takes orders from Obama or his former administration. However, they show how closely its leadership has overlapped with major Democratic policy circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-where-does-the-money-go\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Does the Money Go?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF\u2019s biggest concern is not simply that Joyce supports gun control. The foundation says that openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The larger concern is how that money can influence research, public policy and media coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssfs-gun-rights-insights-exposes-the-joyce-foundation-for-gun-control-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"joyce-foundation-gun-control-funding\" title=\"NSSF Exposes Joyce Foundation\u2019s Gun-Control Funding\">NSSF\u2019s report<\/a>, Joyce helped fund organizations including the Violence Policy Center and the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence later merged with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Its policy work included permit-to-purchase laws, restrictions on public carry and <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/california-doj-declares-microstamping-viable\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"joyce-foundation-gun-control-funding\" title=\"NSSF Exposes Joyce Foundation\u2019s Gun-Control Funding\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7535\">firearm microstamping<\/a> mandates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/zco-zc210-review-san-1-2-10x30\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"joyce-foundation-gun-control-funding\" title=\"NSSF Exposes Joyce Foundation\u2019s Gun-Control Funding\">ZCO ZC210 Review: The 2-10x Do-It-All Scope<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF describes microstamping as a backdoor gun ban because commercially available firearms may not be able to meet the requirement reliably. The National Institute of Standards and Technology recently told Congress that available research does not establish the technology\u2019s reliability for identifying a firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joyce has also funded New Venture Fund, a nonprofit financial hub supporting numerous progressive organizations and campaigns. Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers sued the group over allegations involving foreign money and state political activity. Those allegations have not been resolved by the information NSSF presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-nssf-is-calling-it-out\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why NSSF Is Calling It Out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research can shape legislation, court arguments and public opinion. It can also provide talking points that bounce from advocacy groups to politicians and eventually into news coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why the people paying for it matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF argues that gun owners should know when a study or campaign presented as independent received financial backing from a foundation already committed to expanding firearm restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not automatically make every study false. It does mean readers should examine the funding, methods and conclusions instead of accepting a headline at face value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF also points to Chicago, the Joyce Foundation\u2019s home city, as a real-world test of the policies the organization supports. Illinois already has some of the country\u2019s strictest firearm laws. Yet Chicago continues to struggle with <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/america-violent-crime-research-canada-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"joyce-foundation-gun-control-funding\" title=\"NSSF Exposes Joyce Foundation\u2019s Gun-Control Funding\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7534\">violent crime<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/people-book-celebrates-gun-owners-across-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"joyce-foundation-gun-control-funding\" title=\"NSSF Exposes Joyce Foundation\u2019s Gun-Control Funding\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7532\">Second Amendment<\/a> community and the Joyce Foundation will obviously disagree over what that proves. Joyce supporters argue that more intervention is needed. NSSF argues that additional restrictions mainly burden citizens who already follow the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either way, the money behind the debate is no small matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Joyce Foundation has the resources to fund research, advocacy and policy work for years. NSSF\u2019s message to gun owners is equally straightforward: follow the money, examine who benefits and do not confuse well-funded activism with a spontaneous grassroots movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
