From an officer\u2019s perspective, anyone holding a gun when police arrive could be the killer. The officer may have only seconds to separate the villain from the vigilante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That has led some <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/top-3-concealable-wheelguns-revolvers-reign-supreme\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7500\">concealed carriers to consider wearing a CCW<\/a> badge, sash or other identifier. John Correia of <a href=\"https:\/\/activeselfprotection.com\/our-owner-and-founder-john-correia\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\">Active Self Protection Extra <\/a>recently addressed that question, and his answer was clear: Save your money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Should  I Have A CCW Badge | Active Self Protection Extra\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Ly5WldFpEo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/cnn-don-lemon-bashes-protestors\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7496\">Do you think<\/a> concealed carriers should wear an identifier badge or sash to help avoid confusion?  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correia raised the issue while discussing armed citizen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/article316760996.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\">Austin Scott James<\/a>. James reportedly moved toward the active killer at the Idaho In-and-Out but hesitated to draw his firearm because he feared responding officers might mistake him for the attacker. He was then critically wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concern also recalls the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/denver7.com\/news\/local-news\/mother-of-good-samaritan-john-hurley-city-of-arvada-reach-settlement-in-lawsuit-after-2021-olde-town-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\">shooting<\/a> in Arvada, Colorado. Armed citizen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.police1.com\/officer-shootings\/articles\/police-samaritan-killed-colo-gunman-then-was-shot-by-police-while-holding-suspects-gun-fguxnvdYA2PJqGSy\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\">Johnny Hurley<\/a> stopped a gunman who had murdered a police officer. Hurley then picked up the killer\u2019s AR-pattern rifle. A responding officer saw Hurley holding it, mistook him for the attacker and fatally shot him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hurley was a hero. His death was also an extraordinarily rare and tragic example of how quickly identities can become confused during a chaotic attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would a shiny identifier badge or sash have prevented it? A sash packed under someone\u2019s clothing does nothing until he finds time to put it on. Even then, the officer still sees an unknown person holding a gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Badges also cut both ways. If anyone can buy a \u201cconcealed carrier\u201d badge online, so can the killer. A bad guy could display one as a decoy, create more confusion.  Or, buy himself another second to attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also the danger of looking like someone impersonating a <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/graphic-footage-officer-fatally-shoots-man-pretending-to-draw-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7498\">police officer<\/a>. A novelty badge might create problems during an ordinary encounter without providing meaningful protection during the rare event it was purchased for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correia\u2019s better answer is to handle the immediate threat first. If an armed citizen chooses to intervene, the presence or absence of a sash should not drive that decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the threat ends, the priorities change. Do not pick up the attacker\u2019s gun. Move it away if necessary, but carrying it could make identification even harder. Holster your own firearm when it is safe. Move behind cover, check for injuries, <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/shoot-first-call-911-911-call-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7497\">call 911<\/a> and prepare to follow every command from responding officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another option that armed citizens sometimes overlook: Get off the X and leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/top-five-pocket-carry-holsters\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-concealed-carriers-wear-ccw-badge\" title=\"Should Concealed Carriers Wear an Identifier Badge?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7499\">Carrying a gun<\/a> does not make anyone a police officer. It does not create a duty to hunt an attacker through a building. Running toward gunfire carries enormous risks, including being shot by the killer, another armed citizen or responding police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no perfect answer. Intervention might save lives. It might also create another armed figure for officers to identify in a scene already filled with noise, panic and incomplete information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correia\u2019s position is simple: Skip the badge and sash. Train seriously, understand the risks and think through the aftermath before trouble finds you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s continue the conversation. Would you wear a CCW badge or sash to identify yourself?
