This gun is chambered in 9mm and packs 18 rounds (or 10 for the compliant model) with a flush-fit magazine due to the full-sized grip. This full-sized grip is contrasted with a short 3.5″ barrel. When paired with the right ammunition, this gun is capable of incredible accuracy. 1911 fans and manufacturers have somehow made up a classification system that is less intuitive than Glock’s. Yet, still, none of these properly describe the new 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS that Springfield just released.

Springfield’s new double-stacked 1911, commonly referred to as a “2011,” features a full-length grip module and a short 3.5″ barrel. This design is fantastic for concealed carry purposes since it cuts down the weight and length of the gun while retaining full-sized capacity.

Why the Prodigy 3.5 AOS Makes Sense for Concealed Carry

The grip and magazine capacity of the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS are full-sized. This leaves you with an 18-round magazine capacity and a comfortable grip with enough room for all of your fingers. However, the rest of the gun is designed to be compact for ultimate concealability and comfort while doing so. This 18-round Mec-Gar magazine is nearly flush-fitting, and the magwell is moderately internally flared, with no bulky external flared magwell.

I put the 3.5″ Prodigy AOS through tons of live fire testing, varying from benchtop accuracy tests to run-and-gun competition-style target shooting.

To beat the (already) dead horse, the barrel is shortened to 3.5 inches. The slide and frame are also appropriately shortened. The beavertail is bobbed so it won’t jab you needlessly while concealed carrying it. Also, the hammer is recontoured to be shorter and slightly lower profile.

With a Series 70 trigger system, this platform retains the best possible trigger pull in both weight and feel. Paired with a titanium firing pin and extra-power firing pin spring, the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS maintains the highest possible level of drop safety possible from this design.

Furthermore, the optics plates retain the rear sight. If you choose to mount an optic on this gun, which you should, the sights remain and are designed to be co-witnessed with your optic. The rear sight is serrated and blacked, but the front sight is tritium.

Finally, Springfield made the wise decision to provide an under-barrel Picatinny rail. Lights, lasers, and whatever other accessories you desire are attached here. I mounted a Streamlight TLR-7 X Gun Light on mine.

The Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS has a full-length grip that has an internally flared magazine well and a bobbed beavertail for maximum comfort when carrying.

Prodigy AOS Optic System: Keep Your Irons and Add a Dot

Springfield’s 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS readily accepts any of the common optics available on the market today. This is accomplished with a plate system. These plates all retain the rear iron sight while allowing the user to mount their desired optic in a co-witness fashion. This gun ships with the A13B optic plate which fits the HEX Dragonfly / Docter / Noblex footprint. You also receive a coupon for an additional AOS plate of your choice for just $49.00 ($80.00 off MSRP). There are five other plates that can be purchased separately from Springfield. I’ll list these plates and their footprint below.

Part Number

Fitment

A12B

HEX Wasp, Holosun 507K / 507K-X2, Shield RMSc / RMS2

A13B

HEX Dragonfly / Docter / Noblex

A14B

Trijicon RMR / SRO, Holosun 407c

A15B

Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, EOTech EFLX

A18B

Aimpoint Acro

A19B

Holosun 509

The AOS plate system is fantastic. Springfield sells any plates you may need to mount your favorite optic. These plates are easy to install and retain the rear iron sight.

Prodigy 3.5 AOS Fit and Finish Feels Far More Expensive

Springfield knocked it out of the park on build quality with the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS. I tested one of the very first Prodigy 1911 DS handguns, and I can’t help but compare this iteration to that one. It seems like Springfield has refined their process in some way, because the slide has zero play, almost feeling hand-fitted to the frame.

The perfect slide fitment isn’t the only thing I noticed. The safety clicks on and off in a crisp, wiggle-free manner. Also, the magazine catch snaps into place when the magazine is inserted, producing a satisfying and distinctive click as the magazine seats fully. Another nice touch is the flush fitment of the reverse plug and guide rod with the slide at the muzzle end. There are other small details that really create an expensive and high-quality feel for the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS.

The fit and finish of this gun is excellent. This platform is much smoother and has better fitment than my first Prodigy, which happened to also be excellent for the price.

🛒 Check Current Price for Springfield Prodigy 3.5 AOS on GunsAmerica

The 3.5-Lb Series 70 Trigger Delivers the 1911 Feel

The 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS features a Series 70 trigger. This just means that the trigger is a no-frills, 1911-style trigger. There is not a firing pin block like in a Series 80 trigger, but the Series 70 tends to feel crisper and lighter because of this.

Consequently, the trigger on this gun is light and crisp with minimal take-up. There is a positive back wall and short reset. I measured the pull weight of my trigger with a Wheeler gauge at exactly 3.5 lbs. The trigger shoe itself is polymer with a curved, serrated face. The size of the trigger shoe appears to be a C2, which fits the average person perfectly. Plus, this size happens to be my preferred trigger shoe.

Springfield Prodigy Accuracy Test: Six Loads at 15 Yards

After I put several hundred rounds through the Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS, it was time for the accuracy test. This test consists of shooting five-round groups of different ammunition types from a bench at a distance of 15 yards. To milk every bit of precision out of the gun and isolate the variable pulling the trigger as best I could, I used a red dot, bipod, and rear bag during each string of fire. I also allowed the gun to cool adequately between groups.

Though it looks ridiculous, I chose to accuracy test this platform using a bipod and rear rest from a bench. The goal of this testing is to identify the level or precision the gun is capable of, not myself.

I chose to use a Vortex Defender-ST 3 MOA dot because it balances a large viewing window with relatively compact size. If I were to carry this gun daily, I could justify using this optic since it isn’t overly bulky. On the flipside, I also used an MDT Ckye Pod, which I would not recommend for daily carry.

I selected six different ammunitions, with four being defensive ammunition. The remaining two are what we’d call range ammunition. The defensive options tested are Hornady American Gunner 115 grain XTP, Hornady Critical Duty 124 grain FlexLock, Hornady Custom 147 grain XTP, and Winchester Silver Tip 147 grain Defense JHP. Throughout, this pistol has continued to impress me for a number of reasons. First, I’ve yet to experience any malfunctions of any type. I’ve even used ammunition that ranged from 65-grain projectiles to 147-grain, and still had no issues.

Second, the recoil impulse is much softer than I expected from a short and light gun. During a day of training with a friend who shoots a Glock 17, we practiced doubles on steel at distance, and my speed and accuracy were comparable to his. And he was using a full-sized gun!

I really enjoyed my time at the range with the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS. This gun packs a punch, but remains compact and easy to shoot.

Third, the ergonomics of this platform are top-tier. The small details such as the bobbed beavertail and recontoured hammer make the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS perfect as a daily carry gun. Then add in the fact that the barrel is shortened, which makes the platform lighter and more comfortable to carry IWB. Last but not least, this Prodigy retains the full-sized grip that provides maximum real estate for an optimal grip.

And finally, the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS performed phenomenally in the accuracy test. Yes, there was an outlier that performed terribly, but there was also an outlier that performed incredibly well. The other four ammunition types hovered around, or just below, the group size that I would expect this sized platform to produce. These results really highlight the importance of testing defensive ammunition in every gun that you carry for self-defense for both reliability and accuracy.

Springfield Prodigy 3.5 AOS Specifications and Key Features

The Prodigy 3.5″ AOS combines the controls and trigger characteristics shooters expect from a double-stack 1911 with a compact 3.5″ upper and a full-length grip module. The full sized grip, flush fit magazines, and 3.5″ barrel are a great match for controllability when shooting and comfort when carrying. The titanium firing pin cuts down on the mass and inertia of the pin in the scenario where it’s dropped, making this gun much more drop safe than 1911s and 2011s with a steel firing pin. Speaking of safety, the Prodigy 3.5″ AOS also has an ambidextrous safety as well as a grip safety.

As I’ve come to expect of any handgun being released in 2026, this little DS 1911 comes with an optic mounting system that will allow the pairing of nearly any red dot on the market. This is accomplished through interchangeable plates that they call the Agency Optic System (AOS). With the optic mounted, the serrated rear and tritium front sight remain in a co-witness fashion with the optic. Besides the ability to add whatever red dot you want to this little gun that could, you also get a Picatinny accessory rail on the dust cover. Here, you can mount whatever accessory you desire.

The Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS 9mm has a Picatinny accessory rail on the dust cover that can be used to mount whatever you wish. I chose to mount a flashlight on mine.

At the end of my testing with the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″ AOS, I’m really impressed. Non-objectively, I just like it. The 1911/2011 style platform is always a pleasure to shoot, and now it can also be a pleasure to carry at a (relatively) affordable price point. Specifically, this gun has an MSRP of $1,582.00, which is similar to other comparable options on the market. Of course, you could easily spend double or triple this in the 2011 market.

That combination is what makes the Prodigy 3.5″ AOS interesting. It is short, where a carry gun benefits from being short, but Springfield kept the full-sized grip and 18-round magazine capacity, which directly benefit control and shootability. Add the Series 70 trigger, AOS optic system, accessory rail, and the accuracy demonstrated during testing, and this is much more than a chopped-down 1911 built simply to be smaller.

Learn more about the Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5″
