You know, like trying to diet and accidentally eating half a pizza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a newly published study, that&#8217;s pretty much what happened after Oregon voters narrowly approved Measure 114.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of reducing firearm ownership, the controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/bill-social-security-nics\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-oregon-gun-control-backfires\" title=\"New Study: Oregon Gun Control Backfires!\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7442\">gun control<\/a> measure sent Oregonians rushing to gun stores in record numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Study author details how an Oregon gun control law led to increased gun buying\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DgloUDCwvhE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0047272726001507?via=ihub\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-oregon-gun-control-backfires\" title=\"New Study: Oregon Gun Control Backfires!\">study<\/a>, published in the <em>Journal of Public Economics<\/em>, found that firearm background checks jumped 14 percent in the days leading up to the November 2022 election. After Measure 114 passed, background checks exploded by 157 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s exactly the kind of outcome <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/newsmax-the-100-most-influential-pro-gun-rights-advocates\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-oregon-gun-control-backfires\" title=\"New Study: Oregon Gun Control Backfires!\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7440\">gun rights advocates<\/a> predicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (<a href=\"https:\/\/ccrkba.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-oregon-gun-control-backfires\" title=\"New Study: Oregon Gun Control Backfires!\">CCRKBA<\/a>) says the numbers show the law had the opposite effect of what supporters intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was as predictable as winter rain in Portland,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ccrkba-easier-to-get-a-gun-than-a-burger-your-fries-arent-cooked\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-oregon-gun-control-backfires\" title=\"New Study: Oregon Gun Control Backfires!\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7441\">CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Measure 114 squeaked by with just a 1.3 percent margin, fewer than 25,000 votes out of more than 1.9 million ballots cast.  The law created a permit-to-purchase system and other restrictions that supporters argued would reduce gun violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s just one catch.  Nearly four years later, the law still hasn&#8217;t taken effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Measure 114 remains tied up in both state and federal court challenges, and Oregon lawmakers have delayed implementation until January 1, 2028, assuming it survives those lawsuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-see-also-hk-g3-clone-review-ptr-91-brings-the-cold-war-back\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hk-g3-clone-ptr-91-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-oregon-gun-control-backfires\" title=\"New Study: Oregon Gun Control Backfires!\">HK G3 Clone Review: PTR-91 Brings the Cold War Back<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, plenty of Oregonians apparently decided they weren&#8217;t waiting around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Backers of Measure 114 have been humiliated,&#8221; Gottlieb said. &#8220;Their intention was to make gun ownership so burdensome that the number of firearms in the state would decrease. Instead, Beaver State citizens sent the gun control crowd a message that their narrow win at the polls&#8230; has turned into a serious policy and philosophical defeat.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gottlieb argued that the permit requirement motivated many residents to purchase firearms before additional restrictions could take effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Their narrow victory awakened Oregonians, who flocked to gun shops and sporting goods stores,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study supports that conclusion, documenting a sharp spike in <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/glock-shroud-predator-combatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-oregon-gun-control-backfires\" title=\"New Study: Oregon Gun Control Backfires!\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7443\">firearm<\/a> purchases immediately after the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CCRKBA also noted that virtually every major <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/getting-know-nagr-fastest-growing-gun-rights-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-oregon-gun-control-backfires\" title=\"New Study: Oregon Gun Control Backfires!\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7439\">national gun rights organization<\/a> filed lawsuits challenging Measure 114, leaving its future uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Oregon&#8217;s firearm population has only grown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Would-be Utopians in the Willamette Valley who barely passed the measure vastly underestimated the determination of rights-minded citizens,&#8221; Gottlieb said. &#8220;Their nutty dream of a gun-free Oregon has turned into their personal nightmare because now there are more guns in the state.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ll have to wait to see if Measure 114 ultimately survives constitutional review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the meantime, we know that if the goal was to convince fewer Oregonians to buy guns&#8230; mission not exactly
