Night vision accessories have become far more attainable over the last few years. As more shooters build rifles around passive aiming and IR lasers, finding a capable IR illuminator without spending premium money has become easier than ever. The Streamlight ProTac Rail Mount VIR Pro aims squarely at that market, offering both white light and IR illumination in a single package with a street price around $248.

Table of contents

Streamlight VIR Pro Comes Ready to Mount and Run

Rotating Head Makes the VIR Pro Fit Real Rifles

Jack-Cap Controls Add Useful Backup Under Pressure

Dual-Fuel Power Keeps the VIR Pro Running

Streamlight VIR Pro IR Test: Useful to 300 Yards

1,100-Lumen White Light: Wide, Bright, and Practical

Is the Streamlight VIR Pro Worth $248?

Streamlight VIR Pro Comes Ready to Mount and Run

One thing Streamlight consistently does well is including everything needed to get up and running, and the VIR Pro is no exception. It places the light much closer to the handguard, creating a cleaner profile while positioning the bezel exactly where I prefer it on my AR-15. That lower profile also helps keep the rifle from feeling bulky. It’s a nice touch that Streamlight includes both mounting options instead of forcing buyers to purchase additional accessories.

The Streamlight VIR Pro comes with both Picatinny and offset M-LOK mounting options.

Rotating Head Makes the VIR Pro Fit Real Rifles

The VIR Pro has an unusual light head, but it serves a purpose. The head rotates so it can clear different rail setups or suppressors before being locked into place. That’s especially useful since many modern rifles wear suppressors or larger handguards that can interfere with fixed-body lights.

I tested mine on a suppressed AR-15. Even with the head positioned perfectly, my long SilencerCo Hybrid 46M still produced a noticeable suppressor shadow. That’s more a function of suppressor length than the light itself, but it’s something buyers should expect if they’re running larger cans with the compact M-LOK mount.

Changing between white light and IR is also well thought out. Near the front of the light sits a three-position selector switch. IR is on one side, OFF sits in the middle, and white light is on the opposite side. That layout quickly becomes second nature and makes it much easier to avoid accidentally activating visible light when working under night vision.

The selector toggles IR, OFF, and white light, while the set screw locks the rotating light head in place.

Initially, though, I noticed one annoyance. The selector switch was fairly stiff from the factory. Because the head rotates, pressing the switch one-handed often caused the entire head to twist instead of changing modes. Fortunately, Streamlight includes a small set screw that locks the head into your preferred orientation. After tightening it, the problem disappeared.

Jack-Cap Controls Add Useful Backup Under Pressure

The rear of the VIR Pro is just as thoughtfully designed. The Jack-Cap tailcap rotates to whatever orientation works best for your rifle, helping reduce unnecessary cable exposure. It accepts the included remote pressure pad while still retaining a push-button switch as a backup. I appreciate that redundancy. If the pressure switch ever fails or you simply choose not to run it, the onboard button still provides full functionality.

The Jack-Cap tailcap provides a push-button plus compatibility with the included remote pressure pad.

Streamlight also deserves credit for including everything needed to properly manage the cable. Picatinny pressure pad retainers, screws, a 3M adhesive strip, and several small zip ties all come in the box. Those zip ties make it easy to tuck the cable against the rail, minimizing the chance of snagging it on brush or gear.

The pressure pad itself sits very low against the handguard. Personally, I still prefer Streamlight’s pressure pads that include a dedicated constant-on button. This one only provides momentary activation. Even so, that wasn’t a major drawback because the tailcap button still gives continuous operation whenever needed.

The included Streamlight VIR Pro pressure pad sits naturally and low on top of the handguard.

Dual-Fuel Power Keeps the VIR Pro Running

Another feature I appreciate is the VIR Pro’s multi-fuel design. It ships with Streamlight’s rechargeable SL-B26 USB battery, but it also accepts two CR123A batteries. That gives you the convenience of recharging at home while still having the option to throw in disposable batteries if you’re traveling or don’t have access to a charger.

Using the included SL-B26 battery, the white light runs for 2 hours on High, 3.75 hours on Medium, and an impressive 14 hours on Low. Since the VIR Pro features TEN-TAP programming, you can tailor the output to your intended use. Whether you prefer High only for maximum simplicity or Low-High mode for extended runtime, it’s easy to configure the light to match your needs.

IR runtime is equally respectable. The illuminator runs for 2 hours on High or stretches to 9 hours on Low with the rechargeable battery. For the output you are getting, this seems to be very respectable performance.

The included SL-B26 rechargeable battery powers both the VIR Pro’s white light and IR illuminator.

Streamlight VIR Pro IR Test: Useful to 300 Yards

This light is clearly intended for shooters using helmet-mounted night vision with an IR-compatible laser or red dot. The 940nm IR LED beam provides a broad, evenly illuminated flood without an overly intense center hotspot. That wider beam works exceptionally well for navigating, scanning fields, or engaging targets at practical night hunting distances.

The VIR Pro offers 2,300 mW on High and 600 mW on Low in IR mode. High is the better choice for open fields and longer-range observation, while Low helps reduce blooming around nearby vegetation and works well in tighter environments. The comparison photos below illustrate the difference between the two settings.

Low 600 mW IR is shown on the left, with High 2,300 mW IR on the right, both aimed at a barn 90 yards away.

During testing, one photo showed a barn sitting roughly 65 yards away while a single tree stretched to approximately 255 yards. When illuminating trees and Johnson grass roughly 30 to 50 yards away, the nearby vegetation reflected enough IR light to create noticeable blooming through my night vision. As a result, objects sitting around 150 yards behind the vegetation became harder to distinguish. However, that’s not unique to this light. This is just how photons and photonic barriers work. Visible flashlights behave the same way when nearby objects reflect enough light to overpower what’s farther downrange.

VIR Pro on High shining at Johnson grass 30 yards away, with the hill behind at 150 yards and trees at 50 yards.

Overall, I found the useful High IR illumination extends to roughly 300 yards while maintaining a broad viewing area. That makes the VIR Pro an excellent choice for close- to mid-range shooting with a helmet-mounted night vision setup. However, shooters wanting tight beam focus for clip-on night vision systems or precision shooting several hundred yards away will likely want a dedicated long-range IR illuminator instead.

1,100-Lumen White Light: Wide, Bright, and Practical

The white light shares a beam profile very similar to the IR illuminator. Instead of producing an extremely concentrated hotspot, it favors a wide, usable flood. That makes it well suited for defensive carbines or hunting inside typical engagement distances. Output is impressive on paper at 1,100 lumens and 40,000 candela.

The white light provides 1,100 lumens on High, 540 lumens on Medium, and 120 lumens on Low. High offers the greatest reach. Medium strikes a nice balance between brightness and runtime, and Low is well-suited for close-range tasks while maximizing battery life. The photos below show how each output level changes the beam pattern and usable illumination.

The VIR Pro’s different white-light brightness levels aimed at a barn 90 yards away.

In practice, I found the high beam remained very bright inside roughly 100 to 150 yards. It arrives with every accessory you’ll need, offers flexible mounting options, includes rechargeable and CR123A battery compatibility, and combines both white light and IR illumination into one rugged package.

I especially liked the intuitive mode selector, rotating light head, redundant tailcap controls, and complete mounting hardware. Those small details make installation easier and operation more intuitive in the dark. With the included mounts, shooters using very long suppressors should expect suppressor shadow, and the IR beam isn’t designed to compete with premium adjustable-focus illuminators built for extreme distances.

Still, that’s not really its mission. For around $248, the VIR Pro delivers versatile performance for passive aiming, night hunting, and general close- to mid-range night vision use. If you’re looking for an affordable all-in-one white light and IR illuminator that doesn’t require additional accessories right out of the box, the Streamlight ProTac Rail Mount VIR Pro deserves a serious look.

Related Reads from GunsAmerica Digest

Streamlight VIR II: Bridging the Spectrum Between IR and Visible Light

Streamlight ProTac Dual Fuel Multi-Battery Lights

Everything You Really Need to Know About Picking a Long Gun Light

The Streamlight ProTac Rail Mount VIR Pro stuffs a powerful white light and serious 940nm IR illumination into one flexible rifle light for around $248.
