One Alabama poacher’s run of illegal deer killing is over after months of investigation by state, federal, and local law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR<\/a>), the case ended with guilty pleas after officers uncovered what they describe as a long-running pattern of night hunting, road hunting, trespassing, and other wildlife crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation began earlier this year after hunters reported being spotlighted while leaving the woods. Conservation officers also received repeated complaints about gunshots after dark in Jackson and DeKalb counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As ADCNR investigators pieced together tips with help from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a clear pattern emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials say the suspect would illegally shoot<\/a> deer at night, leave the area, then return hours later in a different vehicle to collect the animal. In some cases, friends or family reportedly dropped him off to avoid drawing attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators believe the suspect illegally killed at least nine bucks during last season alone and may have been responsible for years of similar violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The break in the case came when Alabama conservation officers spotted a vehicle shining fields late at night. When officers tried to stop it, the driver took off, leading authorities<\/a> on a pursuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the chase, officers watched the suspect throw firearms from the vehicle. Finding them wasn’t easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours later, around 5 a.m., Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Lt. Greg Elrod spotted a single .450 rifle<\/a> cartridge lying in the middle of the road. That clue led officers to a rifle bolt<\/a>, a buttstock, and eventually the discarded firearms after a nearby landowner found the remaining pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation only grew from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Search warrants led officers to narcotics, ammunition, and additional evidence at the suspect’s home. Because the man was already a convicted felon, he was prohibited from possessing firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A second search of his pickup truck turned up seven more firearms, 15 deer racks, and ammunition. Several of those antlers came from freshly killed deer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspect ultimately pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including hunting at night, hunting without landowner permission, and felony eluding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ADCNR credited the success of the investigation to a team effort involving Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries officers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Jackson and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Offices, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials also praised local residents, whose tips helped investigators connect the dots and finally bring the alleged poaching spree to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As ADCNR Chief of Enforcement Michael Weathers put it, cases like this show what can happen<\/a> when state, local, and federal agencies work together to protect wildlife resources that belong to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
