For now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the country&#8217;s most sweeping anti-hunting ballot measures is officially dead for the 2026 election after supporters failed to collect enough valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Oregon Secretary of State&#8217;s Elections Division certified just 104,262 valid signatures, well short of the 117,173 needed to place Initiative Petition 28 (IP 28), also known as the PEACE Act, before voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal would have dramatically expanded Oregon&#8217;s animal cruelty laws by removing legal protections for <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-milwaukee-m12-heated-vest-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-oregon-ip-28-fails-ballot-anti-hunting\" title=\"Oregon\u2019s Anti-Hunting IP 28 Fails to Make the Ballot\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7356\">hunting<\/a>, fishing, trapping, livestock production, and many common animal husbandry practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"In Depth: Oregon Initiative Petition 28 Fails, Measure to Stop Some Hunting, Slaughtering and Breedi\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/emcimBEJcsY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSSF, the firearm industry&#8217;s trade association, strongly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-oregon-ip-28-fails-ballot-anti-hunting\" title=\"Oregon\u2019s Anti-Hunting IP 28 Fails to Make the Ballot\">opposed<\/a> the measure throughout the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This radical anti-<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/never-miss-again-part-v-get-your-mind-right-no-images-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-oregon-ip-28-fails-ballot-anti-hunting\" title=\"Oregon\u2019s Anti-Hunting IP 28 Fails to Make the Ballot\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7360\">hunting<\/a> plan was clearly, and correctly, rejected by Oregonians who wanted no part of this attack on the heritage of outdoorsmanship and proven conservation efforts that managed hunting requires,&#8221; said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-see-also-colt-python-3-inch-two-upgrades-that-perfect-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/colt-python-3-inch-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-oregon-ip-28-fails-ballot-anti-hunting\" title=\"Oregon\u2019s Anti-Hunting IP 28 Fails to Make the Ballot\">Colt Python 3 Inch: Two Upgrades That Perfect It<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keane argued the measure would have devastated Oregon&#8217;s rural economy while undermining the conservation model that hunters have helped fund for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporters of IP 28 gathered more than 140,000 signatures, but election officials invalidated nearly 40,000 during the verification process, leaving the petition well below the required threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to reporting by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmjournal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-oregon-ip-28-fails-ballot-anti-hunting\" title=\"Oregon\u2019s Anti-Hunting IP 28 Fails to Make the Ballot\">Farm Journal<\/a><\/em>, the proposal would have reached far beyond simply banning hunting. Oregon farmer Tim Deboot said it could have criminalized a wide range of normal farming and wildlife management activities, including livestock practices, predator control, rodent control, fishing, and hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If it had passed, we would be out of the livestock business,&#8221; he said during the interview. He added that many common agricultural practices would have been classified as animal abuse under the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal also raised concerns about conservation funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to NSSF, roughly 85 percent of Oregon&#8217;s wildlife funding comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ak-47-hog-blaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-oregon-ip-28-fails-ballot-anti-hunting\" title=\"Oregon\u2019s Anti-Hunting IP 28 Fails to Make the Ballot\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7357\">hunting license sales and Pittman-Robertson excise taxes paid by firearm<\/a> and ammunition manufacturers. The Oregon <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/treasury-department-adds-molot-vepr-import-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-oregon-ip-28-fails-ballot-anti-hunting\" title=\"Oregon\u2019s Anti-Hunting IP 28 Fails to Make the Ballot\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7359\">Department of Fish and Wildlife says hunting<\/a>, fishing, and wildlife watching generated about $1.47 billion in inflation-adjusted spending, while Oregon&#8217;s broader outdoor recreation economy produced roughly $9 billion in economic activity in 2024 and supports more than 76,000 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While sportsmen are celebrating the result, the fight doesn&#8217;t appear to be over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This marks the third time supporters have attempted to qualify the measure, and opponents don&#8217;t expect it to be the last. During <em>Farm Journal&#8217;s<\/em> interview, Tim said supporters have already indicated they&#8217;ll likely return with another version in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, the Oregon Farm Bureau is urging state lawmakers to pass legislation that would better protect hunting, farming, and ranching from similar ballot initiatives going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, however, Oregon&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-quick-fast-and-in-a-hurry-a-two-day-caribou-hunt\/\"
