Instead of admitting what happened, investigators say he and his girlfriend drove to a nearby gas station and claimed he&#8217;d been wounded in a random drive-by shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcnc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"elderly-homeowner-shoots-burglar-fake-drive-by\" title=\"Elderly Homeowner Shoots Alleged Burglar, Suspect Then Tries to Blame Mystery Drive-By\"><em>WCNC<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"elderly-homeowner-shoots-burglar-fake-drive-by\" title=\"Elderly Homeowner Shoots Alleged Burglar, Suspect Then Tries to Blame Mystery Drive-By\"><em>WBTV<\/em><\/a>, that story unraveled quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The homeowner, Donald Bolynn, told reporters he&#8217;d already been targeted once before. So when he heard someone trying to force their way into his Ware Avenue home again, he wasn&#8217;t taking any chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surveillance video reportedly shows 57-year-old Cedric Ford repeatedly pounding on the front door before trying to pry open a window and shove in a window air-conditioning unit to gain entry. Bolynn said he saw Ford outside the window and fired a <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/a-new-gun-for-the-old-west-henry-golden-boy-revolver-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"elderly-homeowner-shoots-burglar-fake-drive-by\" title=\"Elderly Homeowner Shoots Alleged Burglar, Suspect Then Tries to Blame Mystery Drive-By\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7324\">single shot<\/a> through the glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gastonia robbery situation\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ahkzZnyRSuQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It looked like he was trying to come in, so I shot,&#8221; Bolynn told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bullet struck Ford in the chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of sticking around, police say Ford jumped back into a waiting vehicle driven by his girlfriend, Sanja Stallings. The pair headed to a nearby QuikTrip and <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/shoot-first-call-911-911-call-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"elderly-homeowner-shoots-burglar-fake-drive-by\" title=\"Elderly Homeowner Shoots Alleged Burglar, Suspect Then Tries to Blame Mystery Drive-By\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7326\">called 911<\/a>, claiming Ford had been hit during a drive-by shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators weren&#8217;t buying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gastonia police say the supposed drive-by didn&#8217;t match the evidence. Using the city&#8217;s Real Time Crime Center, Flock license plate cameras, surveillance footage and one of the city&#8217;s 158 Flock gunshot detection sensors, detectives traced the gunfire back to Bolynn&#8217;s home. He&#8217;s now <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/california-man-12-felony-charges-registering-ar-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"elderly-homeowner-shoots-burglar-fake-drive-by\" title=\"Elderly Homeowner Shoots Alleged Burglar, Suspect Then Tries to Blame Mystery Drive-By\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7328\">charged with attempted first-degree burglary and felony<\/a> obstruction of justice for allegedly making up the drive-by story. Prosecutors are also reviewing whether additional charges may be appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bolynn&#8217;s circumstances make the case even more remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The homeowner told reporters he lives alone and has dealt with multiple health problems, including recovering from a stroke. Despite those challenges, he said he keeps a firearm for protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve had my firearm for over a year,&#8221; Bolynn said. &#8220;I live by myself.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 75 years old, police say he successfully stopped an alleged burglary before the suspect ever made it inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case is still under review by the Gaston County District Attorney&#8217;s Office, but it&#8217;s already shaping up as one of the more unusual defensive <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-hog-hunting-40\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"elderly-homeowner-shoots-burglar-fake-drive-by\" title=\"Elderly Homeowner Shoots Alleged Burglar, Suspect Then Tries to Blame Mystery Drive-By\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7325\">gun use stories<\/a> of the year.
