They may work well on an AR at modest distances, but image quality often falls apart when magnification increases or targets get small. The MATE Ultra is different.

It uses a 1280×1024, 12-micron thermal sensor, a 60mm f/1.0 objective lens, a 60 Hz refresh rate, and a sensitivity rating of 15 mK or less. Nocpix lists a 3,390-yard detection range and equips the unit with an integrated 1,300-yard laser rangefinder and ballistic calculation.

The Mate Ultra uses a single 18650 rechargeable battery and ships with four of them in the box.

More important, it is a true clip-on. The rifle remains zeroed through the conventional day scope. Once the thermal image is collimated to that optic, the MATE Ultra can be removed and reinstalled without rebuilding the rifle around a dedicated thermal sight.

My unit arrived remarkably close to alignment. At 100 yards, it required no windage correction and only a small elevation adjustment. The quick-detach mount repeatedly returned to zero during several months of testing.

A 1280×1024 thermal sensor, 60mm objective lens, 12-micron pixel pitch, and 60 Hz refresh rate give the MATE Ultra unusually strong image quality for a civilian clip-on.

I did not approach this test without a baseline. I have used many different civilian clip-ons, including competing Nocpix, iRay, Guide, Berring, and SIG units, and have also spent time behind military clip-ons costing over $100,000.

The MATE Ultra cannot show bullet trace like an exotic cooled military system, but it gets closer to that class of performance than any comparably accessible civilian clip-on I have tested.

Watch What Happens at 1,000 Yards

The 473-yard target was almost disappointingly easy. We hit it while dialing the day scope and again by holding with the reticle.

At 1,000 yards, wind became the real problem as it’s hard to judge in the dark. Impacts off the edge of the steel were easy to see, and corrections produced consecutive hits. The image was usable even at 20X, but the pixelation and narrow field of view weren’t great. In practical terms, the better balance of image quality and target size was around 10X to 12X.

The Nocpix MATE Ultra mounts ahead of a conventional riflescope, preserving the rifle’s familiar reticle, turrets, and daytime zero.

The video matters because recorded thermal footage rarely looks as good as the image seen by the shooter. We recorded both through the MATE Ultra and through the day scope using a ScopeMate so viewers can compare the raw thermal image with the actual sight picture and reticle.

There are limits. A premium dedicated thermal such as the Nocpix RICO S75R or ACE A60R provides a better viewing experience because the image is not passing through another optic. Those can’t be dialed like a day scope and the user is at the mercy of the internal ballistics and internal rangefinder.

The MATE Ultra’s internal rangefinder also worked reliably on targets in roughly the 400-to-600-yard range during this test, but it would not consistently return a reading from the 1,000-yard steel. That does not make the rangefinder useless, but buyers should not assume the maximum advertised range will be dependable against every target under field conditions.

I used a Maztech 15k mounted on the day scope for ranging and for ballistic data.

The MATE Ultra’s image was sharpest at low magnification, while approximately 10X to 12X provided the best balance for long-range shooting.

Still, that misses the point of this optic. The MATE Ultra lets a shooter keep a familiar rifle, familiar ammunition, familiar turrets, and a familiar reticle, then convert that rifle from daylight precision use to serious nighttime capability in seconds.

For the complete field test, zeroing method, menu demonstration, recorded image comparison, long-range detection footage, and actual hits at 473 and 1,000 yards, watch the full video.

Learn more by visiting Nocpix USA

What Is a Thermal Clip-On Scope?

A thermal clip-on mounts in front of a conventional riflescope and supplies the thermal image while the shooter continues aiming with the day scope’s reticle. It allows one rifle and optic setup to serve in both daylight and darkness.

Does a Thermal Clip-On Change Your Zero?

A properly mounted and collimated thermal clip-on should preserve the day optic’s zero. The clip-on shifts its displayed image to match the rifle’s established point of impact. Mount quality, ammunition consistency, and correct setup still matter.

How Much Magnification Can You Use With a Thermal Clip-On?

That depends on sensor resolution and optical design. With the Nocpix MATE Ultra, the cleanest image was at low magnification, while 10X to 12X offered a useful balance for long-range shooting. Twenty power remained usable, but image pixelation increased.

Can You Shoot 1,000 Yards With a Thermal Clip-On?

Yes, but not with every thermal clip-on. Many common consumer models are designed for shorter-range use and begin losing the image detail needed for precise aiming beyond roughly 300 to 400 yards.

Reaching 1,000 yards requires a capable rifle, accurate ballistic data, a clearly visible target, favorable conditions, and a high-resolution thermal with enough image quality to remain usable through a magnified day scope. The Nocpix MATE Ultra uses a 1280×1024 sensor and premium internal components that preserve substantially more detail at higher magnification than most consumer clip-ons.

During our test, the MATE Ultra produced repeated hits on unheated steel at 1,000 yards in complete darkness. So yes, shooting that far with a thermal clip-on is possible, but only with equipment built for that level of performance.

Seeing a heat signature at 1,000 yards does not necessarily mean it can be safely identified or engaged. Detection, recognition, identification, and precise shot placement are separate standards.

The 473-yard target and 1000 yard target were easy to locate and hit using either the day scope’s turrets or reticle holdovers.

Is a Clip-On Thermal Better Than a Dedicated Thermal Scope?

Not universally. A dedicated thermal usually provides the best self-contained image, eyepiece, and controls. A clip-on is better for shooters who want to retain their existing day optic, reticle, rifle setup, and conventional shooting process.

Do Thermal Clip-Ons Work in Total Darkness?

Yes. Thermal imaging detects differences in heat rather than visible light, so moonlight and artificial illumination are not required. Weather, humidity, target temperature, and background temperature can still affect image contrast.

Can a Thermal Clip-On See Through Brush?

A thermal can sometimes detect portions of a warm animal through gaps in grass or light vegetation, but it cannot see through solid objects or dense cover.
