Recording your shots through a rifle scope has become increasingly popular among hunters and precision rifle shooters. The ScopeMate S28-TSC Max enters an uncrowded market with several features that immediately separate it from the competition. After spending time behind the rifle with the camera mounted to my <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/vortex-razor-hd\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"scopemate-s28-tsc-max-review\" title=\"ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Review: 4K With a Catch\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7294\">Vortex Razor HD<\/a> Gen III 6-36x, I found several things that I genuinely loved, along with a few areas where I think there is still room for improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-scopemate-s28-tsc-max-specs-4k-60-fps-and-240-fps-slow-motion\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Specs: 4K 60 FPS and 240 FPS Slow Motion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ScopeMate S28-TSC Max is designed for hunters and precision rifle shooters who want to record exactly what they see through the optic. It records in resolutions up to 4K at 60 FPS while also offering lower resolutions with higher frame rates, including 720p at an impressive 240 FPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of its standout features is the integrated HD touchscreen. Unlike many competing systems, nearly every setup task happens directly on the camera without requiring a phone. The aluminum housing is rated IP64 for weather resistance, weighs approximately 280 grams (9.8 ounces), accepts SD cards up to 512GB, and runs on a removable 18650 battery that ScopeMate rates for up to 13 hours of recording. Follow ScopeMate&#8217;s instructional YouTube videos before trying to configure everything yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus adjustment offers an enormous amount of travel. Initially, I struggled to achieve the image quality I expected because I was trying to focus it manually without using the camera&#8217;s digital zoom feature. The included shims centered everything securely, although aligning the camera isn&#8217;t quite as effortless as some of the competition. The camera seemed slightly off center, causing me to have a narrow band to avoid an upper scope shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-touchscreen-is-the-scopemate-s-killer-feature\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Touchscreen Is the ScopeMate&#8217;s Killer Feature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The touchscreen is easily my favorite feature. After years of using the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/triggercam-2-1-record-in-up-to-4k-through-your-day-scope\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"scopemate-s28-tsc-max-review\" title=\"ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Review: 4K With a Catch\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7295\">TriggerCam 2.1<\/a> system, having a bright display built directly into the camera completely changes the user experience. However, the icons are fairly small, so it&#8217;s easy to accidentally tap the wrong button with gloves or larger fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ScopeMate also includes Wi-Fi connectivity for live viewing and downloading footage. The feature worked well during testing. However, I rarely found myself using it because the onboard display already handled nearly everything I wanted to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-removable-18650-power-is-a-huge-field-advantage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Removable 18650 Power Is a Huge Field Advantage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be my second favorite feature. Rather than relying on a permanently installed battery, the ScopeMate runs on a standard removable 18650 cell. That&#8217;s a major advantage for anyone spending long days in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If one battery dies, I simply swap in another and continue recording within seconds. Internal rechargeable batteries inevitably lose capacity over time. Once that happens, many electronics become difficult or impossible to use effectively. Since the ScopeMate uses removable batteries, replacing a worn-out cell costs very little instead of replacing the entire camera. After a few years, my TriggerCam\u2019s internal battery won\u2019t record for more than a few minutes, but with the ScopeMate I don\u2019t have to worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only drawback is size. One powers the unit, another starts recording, and the third activates Wi-Fi. Mounted behind my scope, it extended far enough rearward above the scope that it interfered with the bill of my baseball cap. I often found myself turning my hat backwards while shooting. As a right-handed shooter, the housing also completely blocked my view of the windage turret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, I could still see my elevation turret and even glance at my ballistic calculator with my left eye while staying behind the rifle. The high-speed modes were genuinely fun to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recording <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/rimfire-shootout-savage-17-hmr-vs-22-lr\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"scopemate-s28-tsc-max-review\" title=\"ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Review: 4K With a Catch\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"7293\">.22 LR<\/a> at 720p and 240 FPS allowed me to slow footage enough to actually watch bullets flying toward the target. That alone made for some entertaining footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also spent considerable time experimenting with various frame rates while shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor at 625 yards. Unfortunately, I never managed to capture bullet trace. Some of that comes from recoil and the difficulty of recording trace in general. More importantly, I could continue using my optic normally whether the recorder was powered on or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-4k-catch-scopemate-image-quality-falls-short\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 4K Catch: ScopeMate Image Quality Falls Short<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where my biggest disappointment surfaced. While the ScopeMate technically records in resolutions up to 4K, the actual image quality never looked like what I personally expect from modern 4K footage. Targets remained easy to identify. I could clearly observe impacts and misses at 625 yards. The reticle also stayed crisp throughout testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, grass, rocks, brush, and other fine details consistently appeared softer than expected. However, TriggerCam still produces noticeably sharper images, especially as magnification increases. ScopeMate told me roughly 30 percent of the available light is directed to the camera while the remaining 70 percent reaches your eye. In practice, though, it didn&#8217;t feel like I was giving up nearly that much brightness. Looking through the optic with the camera installed, I only noticed what I&#8217;d describe as a very slight tint or dimming. Perhaps five to ten percent. The comparison photos below illustrate the difference. As ambient light fades, video quality drops off much faster than what I see through the optic. Around 15 minutes after sunset, my recorded video became completely unusable, even though I could still comfortably see through the scope. Game animals often become most active during the first and last minutes of legal shooting light. While the ScopeMate won&#8217;t significantly reduce what you can see through your scope, it may not produce footage that accurately captures what your eyes are seeing during those critical dawn and dusk moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-scopemate-s28-tsc-max-pros-and-cons-what-matters-in-the-field\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Pros and Cons: What Matters in the Field<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pros:<\/strong> Built-in touchscreen, removable 18650 battery, up to 13 hours of recording, 4K at 60 FPS, 720p at 240 FPS, simple physical controls, Wi-Fi connectivity, and minimal interference with the usable scope image.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cons:<\/strong> Softer image detail than expected from a premium 4K recorder, weaker low-light video performance, small touchscreen icons, a bulky housing, and potential obstruction of the windage turret for right-handed shooters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-scopemate-s28-tsc-max-verdict-convenience-vs-clarity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Verdict: Convenience vs. Clarity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/nvscopemate.com\/products\/scopemate-s28-tsc-scope-camera\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"scopemate-s28-tsc-max-review\" title=\"ScopeMate S28-TSC Max Review: 4K With a Catch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ScopeMate S28-TSC Max<\/a> does a lot of things exceptionally well. Its built-in touchscreen completely transforms the user experience. Likewise, the removable 18650 battery provides outstanding runtime while eliminating one of the biggest long-term concerns associated with internal rechargeable batteries. Everyday operation is considerably more convenient than other competing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, image clarity leaves something to be desired. While the camera captures usable footage and accurately documents hits, misses, and the entire sight picture, it simply doesn&#8217;t produce the crisp image quality I expected from a premium 4K recorder. For shooters who prioritize the absolute sharpest footage possible, that&#8217;s worth considering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, I believe ScopeMate priced the S28-TSC Max fairly. If your priorities are ease of use, excellent battery life, onboard controls, and reliable operation, it offers a compelling package.
