You can use your credit card in all 50 states. Heck, your Costco membership works practically everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But legally carry a concealed handgun across the wrong state line? Suddenly things get&#8230;complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity is back in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/articles\/20260721\/lott-op-ed-lends-additional-support-to-national-right-to-carry-effort\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"national-right-to-carry-reciprocity\" title=\"National Reciprocity Is Back. And It's Hard to Ignore the Debate Around It.\">recently<\/a> put the issue back on the radar during a stop at a Mack Trucks plant in Pennsylvania, telling the crowd, &#8220;National Right-to-Carry, we&#8217;re working on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few days later, economist Dr. John Lott added fuel to the conversation with a <em>RealClearPolitics<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/articles\/2026\/07\/04\/crossing_a_state_line_shouldnt_cost_you_your_right_to_self-defense_154301.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"national-right-to-carry-reciprocity\" title=\"National Reciprocity Is Back. And It's Hard to Ignore the Debate Around It.\">op-ed<\/a> arguing that Americans shouldn&#8217;t lose the ability to legally defend themselves simply because they crossed an invisible line on a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve followed the Second Amendment world for any length of time, Lott needs little introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He&#8217;s the guy behind <em>More Guns, Less Crime<\/em>.  The book that has probably started more Thanksgiving dinner arguments than your uncle forwarding chain emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For nearly three decades, Lott has been crunching crime data, researching concealed carry laws and asking a simple question: What actually happens when law-abiding people are allowed to carry firearms?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His latest argument is refreshingly practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Americans already live under some form of reciprocity. The average state recognizes permits from roughly 30 other states, and according to Lott, the horror stories opponents predicted simply haven&#8217;t materialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-trump-we-re-working-on-national-reciprocity-bill\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/trump-national-right-to-carry-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"national-right-to-carry-reciprocity\" title=\"National Reciprocity Is Back. More than 21 million Americans now possess concealed carry permits. If reciprocity were producing widespread problems, Lott argues, we&#8217;d probably know about them by now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of his more compelling examples isn&#8217;t hypothetical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Picture a woman driving alone at night through unfamiliar territory. Or an RV couple crossing the country. Or a truck driver hauling an expensive load coast to coast. They may be perfectly legal to carry in one state, only to become accidental criminals a few miles later because the next state refuses to recognize the permit they already earned back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporters of reciprocity say that&#8217;s a system in desperate need of common sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The comparison they almost always make is driver&#8217;s licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every state has different licensing requirements. Every state has different traffic laws. Speed limits change. Cell phone laws change. Right turns on red aren&#8217;t universal. Yet nobody argues you should stop at the Pennsylvania border and retake your driver&#8217;s exam before entering Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re simply expected to follow the rules of whatever state you&#8217;re visiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lott argues concealed carry should work the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National reciprocity wouldn&#8217;t create one giant federal carry law. States would still decide where firearms can be carried and what restrictions apply within their borders. Visitors would simply be expected to follow those local laws, just like they already do behind the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another point Lott tackles is one that&#8217;s been raised for years by opponents. And It's Hard to Ignore the Debate Around It.\">Prodigy COA Tested: 100 Yards, Zero Malfunctions<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to his research, there&#8217;s little evidence to support that concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lott notes that concealed carry permit holders consistently rank among the most law-abiding groups in the country. Permit revocations for firearm-related violations are measured in tiny fractions of a percent, and he argues permit holders lose their licenses for firearm offenses at rates even lower than police officers are convicted of firearm-related crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also challenges the notion that permit standards vary so dramatically that reciprocity would somehow become dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that were true, Lott argues, states with less restrictive permitting systems should show significantly higher rates of permit abuse. He says the data simply doesn&#8217;t bear that out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another interesting trend involves who&#8217;s choosing to carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many people still picture concealed carry as mostly older men wearing fishing vests (let&#8217;s be honest, we&#8217;ve all seen the stereotype), Lott says permit ownership has been growing fastest among women and Black Americans over the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He argues that isn&#8217;t surprising. The people least able to physically overpower an attacker often have the most to gain from an effective means of self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lott also points to law enforcement support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the data he cites, roughly 86% of police chiefs and sheriffs and about 90% of rank-and-file officers support right-to-carry laws or national reciprocity. And It's Hard to Ignore the Debate Around It.\">How to Zero a Red Dot in 5 Simple Steps<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As he puts it, around 700,000 law enforcement officers cannot provide immediate protection for more than 340 million Americans spread across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, none of this means the legislation has an easy road ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House has generally shown support for reciprocity legislation in recent years.  But the Senate remains a much tougher hurdle. Any bill would likely require bipartisan support to overcome procedural roadblocks, making its path anything but guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, after years of quietly sitting on the legislative shelf, national reciprocity is once again a serious topic of discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether Congress ultimately decides to act is another question entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But between renewed support from President Trump, fresh analysis from one of the country&#8217;s best-known gun policy researchers, and millions of permit holders already traveling under existing reciprocity agreements, don&#8217;t expect this conversation to disappear anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong><em>*** <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"national-right-to-carry-reciprocity\" title=\"National Reciprocity Is Back.
