Ruger&#8217;s revived Glenfield name may be cheap where it can be, but this rifle puts the important money in the right places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sturm, Ruger &amp; Co. brought the Marlin lever action rifle line from the brink after acquiring the Marlin Firearms Company in 2020. But as Marlin and Ruger have grown together, their offerings are increasingly upmarket. For a pair of brands that built their names on simple, yet bulletproof designs made for mass appeal, that could not do. It was an economy brand that stuck with plain wood and basic finishes but retained the same great mechanics of the real deal. Glenfield versions of rifles like the Marlin 336 and Model 60 rimfire were available at hardware stores and could be ordered through outfits like K-Mart and Sears, back when those firms understood the difference between equity and debt financing. In any event, with the decline of retailer sales, the Glenfield brand was phased out in 1985. But long after its brief run, hunters and shooters still cling to their Glenfield rifles as shooting irons that work beyond their humble exteriors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given how the gun market has bifurcated between upmarket inflation at one end of the spectrum and chasing the bottom dollar for it at the other, the time was ripe for Glenfield to make a return. I fully expected a plain Marlin 336 in .30-30 or even a resurrected rimfire. Instead, Glenfield is back with a bolt-action hunting rifle in the Model A, which itself is a slightly improved version of Ruger&#8217;s first-generation American rifle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-glenfield-model-a-features-ruger-bones-at-a-budget-price\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Glenfield Model A Features: Ruger Bones at a Budget Price<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the features of the now-discontinued original Ruger American translate over to the Glenfield Model A, but it is not a carbon copy. This bolt-action magazine rifle has the same machined steel action and polished three-lug bolt. The bolt handle&#8217;s sharp 70-degree throw is also carried over, as is the manual safety that rides behind the bolt striker. The safety can be slid forward with the thumb to block the trigger. Unlike most rifle lines, the barrel length and profile remain the same regardless of chambering. The muzzle is threaded for suppressors and other muzzle devices. The rifle uses polymer detachable magazines with a capacity ranging from three to five rounds. The stock is finished in a Mossy Splatter Green scheme and has a texture akin to 180 grit sandpaper, with ribbing down the fore end and pistol grip. The stock is capped with a generous rubber buttpad. I remember thumbing through catalogs and seeing .22 rimfires and single-shot break actions as the only game for the price I could afford. Times have changed, and prices seldom reflect reality, but the bolt-action repeater is more accessible than ever, though many models are more upmarket than in previous years. To get a bolt gun that is under $500 and can shoot well is quite the bargain. Certainly, the aesthetics and features of the Glenfield exude a bargain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rifle is light and quick to handle. Although the texture of the stock took me by surprise, as there are no smooth spots on it, it grips in the hands with confidence. The 13.75-inch length of pull is comfortable for my taller frame and just short enough for an average height, though a bit long for a younger shooter. Although I would have preferred a dedicated magazine latch instead of one built into the magazine itself, that is outweighed by the trigger that breaks with no creep at 3 lbs. on the nose. A Picatinny rail is already installed, so there is no need to hunt before your hunt. Although a threaded barrel is not strictly necessary, cans are increasingly popular. I took advantage of that with my SilencerCo Velos 762 LBP suppressor. To stick to the budget theme, I used budget ammunition. The trick is to find that combination. Some rifles perform extraordinarily consistently. The Glenfield Model A goes into that category. At one hundred yards, the Hornady load printed a consistent three-shot group at 1.25 inches. The S&amp;B load metered out at 1 inch flat. The Winchester open tip load gave groups ranging from .78-.92 inch. The slop-less trigger paid dividends here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The catch comes with a slower rate of fire. After just three rounds, the barrel is hot to the touch. It was common for the first two rounds to touch before the third round widens up the group. Shooting a fourth or fifth round widens it more. While the Model A wouldn&#8217;t be the first choice for those helicopter hog <em>hunts<\/em>, the first few rounds that need to count are going where they are aimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-handling-light-fast-and-built-to-hunt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Handling: Light, Fast, and Built to Hunt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with an optic to weigh it down, the Glenfield Model A is a light, maneuverable piece that balances right at the magazine well for off-sling carry. The light, yet grippable stock anchors well in the shoulder. The length of pull is perfect for taller shooters, as I had no issues with the buttplate snagging on my underarm when coming to the shoulder. With the Velos 762 LBP attached, the rifle is muzzle heavy and a bit fatiguing to shoot offhand after a box of rounds. From a supported position, the rifle is still rock solid and it was not hard to hit eight-inch steel plates at 200 yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the shoulder, the action is easy to work and the seventy-degree bolt throw is both quick and does not impede on the optic. Like other commercial bolt guns, the Model A runs smoothly with precise movements of the bolt rather than the gross lateral movements one would use in a military rifle to get rounds off quickly. The introduction and perfection of the American line, and finally the Glenfield Model A, have brought that theme to reality. The Model A has its limitations, although they are inherent to most light hunting rifles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rifle more than makes up for it in strength, a smart trigger, and a ready platform for an optic, and can right out of the box.
