the classic .30-30 lever action somewhere very different, pairing carbon fiber, M-LOK and suppressor-ready engineering with accuracy that briefly had me wondering whether the Shooting Gods had taken rifle scope could only see two holes. I could\u2019ve pulled a shot of course, but the target\u2019s cardboard backing was large, and I couldn\u2019t see a third hole. Had I pulled my shot by a foot?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I walked the 100 yards and discovered that two of my shots were co-joined, with shot number three touching on the top. Group size, .30 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which brought up two questions. Was my rifle and ammunition combo just this accurate? Or had I experienced a case of gun writer\u2019s dumb luck?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My rifle was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henryusa.com\/firearm\/spd-hush-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-henry-spd-hush-30-30-review\" title=\"Henry SPD HUSH Review: .30-30 Accuracy Gets Wild\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPD HUSH<\/a> chambered in .30-30 Win. from Henry Repeating Arms, and the ammunition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalpremium.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-henry-spd-hush-30-30-review\" title=\"Henry SPD HUSH Review: .30-30 Accuracy Gets Wild\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federal Premium<\/a> Vital-Shok. I\u2019d run two other brands of .30-30 Win through the HUSH, and it looked like a 1.2-inch rifle at 100 yards with those ammo options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back at my shooting bench, I fired three more shots, and they definitely didn\u2019t touch. The group measured out at 1.2 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I did a five-round group and that also drilled in at 1.2 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To me, a rifle\u2019s accuracy means a good deal more than the placement of bullets. I think of it this way: will a rifle with a crappy trigger, low-quality rifling, and poor ergonomics consistently place rounds where they are supposed to land? Not likely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, I didn\u2019t repeat that .30-inch group, though I did make other triple and five-shot groups at an inch. So, some luck, yes. However, I\u2019m not drilling that three-round cluster with a WWII Mosin Nagant bolt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HUSH rifles are the work of Henry\u2019s Special Products Division, and it clearly has the basic rifle elements very much in sync, based on my 125 rounds. Lever guide gun (6.7 pounds), a collaborative effort with Field Ethos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-henry-spd-hush-30-30-carbon-fiber-changes-the-lever-gun\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Henry SPD HUSH .30-30: Carbon Fiber Changes the Lever Gun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My test and evaluation HUSH featured a match-grade 416R stainless steel barrel, wrapped in a tension-loaded roll of carbon fiber. According to Henry, this design creates a 95-percent air gap between the carbon and steel. My HUSH held five rounds of .30-30 Win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-suppressor-ready-by-design-not-as-an-afterthought\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suppressor Ready by Design, Not as an Afterthought<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The barrel on my .30-30 was threaded at 5\/8&#215;24 pitch. All HUSH rifles share the same thread pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But SPD didn\u2019t stop with threading in its quest to make the HUSH rifles suppressor-friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of the box, the rifle felt a bit rear-heavy to me, which I credited to the dense nature of the American hardwood laminate buttstock. The all-titanium Scythe Ti was very lightweight at 7.3 ounces and just 6.16 inches long. But the HUSH .30-30 did all the things a lever action must and did them well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lever itself, for example, worked smoothly through my shooting. Rounds fed easily into the chamber. And crisp generally is not a feature on lever-action triggers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HUSH was comfortable on the shoulder. The rubber recoil pad did its job, and the checkering on the grip helped anchor my hand even when that hand was damp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M-LOK is usually cited as a key to accessorizing, and it certainly fulfills that purpose. The scope measured out at 12.5 inches, with the 30mm tube made from rugged 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Images were very clear through the scope, with colors nicely separated. My two five-shot groups measured 1.5 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Carbon fiber tensioned barrel on the HUSH clearly cooled off quickly. But the quick heat dispersion also meant that by my fourth shot heat mirage waves came off the barrel to distort the scope\u2019s sight picture. Admittedly, the 86-degree temperatures with sun on the barrel didn\u2019t help. And if I let the rifle sit for just a minute or two, heat mirage disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-more-30-30-ammo-more-100-yard-accuracy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">More .30-30 Ammo, More 100-Yard Accuracy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I then used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hornady.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-henry-spd-hush-30-30-review\" title=\"Henry SPD HUSH Review: .30-30 Accuracy Gets Wild\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hornady<\/a> LeveRevolution .30-30 with its 160 grain FTX poly-tipped bullets.
