Others are controversial because the guest says something many people don&#8217;t want to hear. Heather Mac Donald&#8217;s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@StosselTV\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"heather-mac-donald-gun-violence-media-bias\" title=\"The Conversation You're Not Supposed to Have About Gun Violence\">interview<\/a> with John Stossel falls firmly into the second category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Manhattan Institute scholar touched on several third-rail topics, including race, policing, gun violence, media coverage, and what she sees as the unintended consequences of anti-police rhetoric. According to supporters of the theory, widespread accusations of police racism led officers to become less proactive in high-crime areas. The result, they argue, was more crime and more homicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics dispute the theory and argue that crime trends are driven by a variety of factors. Mac Donald, however, believes the evidence is clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The data shows that there is the Ferguson Effect,&#8221; she told Stossel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mac Donald, when police are repeatedly portrayed as a threat rather than a resource, officers become hesitant to engage in proactive policing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When you demonize police officers,&#8221; she said, &#8220;you demoralize those cops.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her argument is that fewer stops, fewer patrols, and less aggressive enforcement ultimately embolden criminals, particularly in neighborhoods already struggling with violent crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-victims-missing-from-the-headlines\">The Victims Missing From the Headlines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mac Donald&#8217;s most provocative claim involves media coverage of gun violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She argues that Americans are constantly exposed to stories involving police shootings but rarely hear about the much larger number of homicide victims killed by criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one point, she made a blunt observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You could get rid of all police shootings of civilians tomorrow and it would have virtually no effect on the black death by homicide rate.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She followed that up with another statistic that she says deserves far more public attention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Blacks between the ages of 10 and 25 die of gun homicide at 25 times the rate of whites in that age category, and they&#8217;re not being killed by the cops.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, Mac Donald notes, most of those deaths occur in criminal violence within the same communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That reality, she says, receives a fraction of the attention devoted to officer-involved shootings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-media-doesn-t-give-a-damn\">&#8220;The Media Doesn&#8217;t Give a Damn&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The interview became especially heated when discussing news coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mac Donald accused the media of selectively covering gun violence based on who the perpetrator is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re supposed to believe that we&#8217;re all racist,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s the media that&#8217;s racist. They don&#8217;t give a damn about black lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her point wasn&#8217;t that reporters intentionally ignore murders. Rather, she argued that the national press is far more interested in narratives involving race and policing than in the daily reality of gang violence, drive-by shootings, and repeat offenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mac Donald, dozens of Black homicide victims are killed every day across America, yet most never become household names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She contrasted that with the intense coverage given to high-profile police encounters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-data-not-politics\">Data, Not Politics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Mac Donald&#8217;s recurring themes is that modern policing is driven by crime data rather than racial animus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She pointed to systems that track shootings, robberies, and calls for service, arguing that police deployment largely follows where crimes occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Policing today is data driven,&#8221; she told Stossel.  That leads to a politically uncomfortable reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If shootings are concentrated in particular neighborhoods, police resources will also be concentrated there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mac Donald argues that critics often mistake that concentration for discrimination when it is actually a response to crime patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also defended technologies like ShotSpotter, noting that such systems frequently direct officers to shooting victims before anyone calls 911. It&#8217;s what she believes those statistics reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She argues that America has become obsessed with discussing disparities in policing while largely ignoring the criminals responsible for the overwhelming majority of homicides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The cops can&#8217;t help those numbers,&#8221; she said while discussing youth homicide rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Mac Donald, focusing on police shootings while neglecting broader homicide trends is like studying a paper cut while ignoring a gunshot wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics would undoubtedly argue that police accountability and community violence are not mutually exclusive concerns.  Fair enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that tension is exactly what makes the conversation so explosive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-this-interview-matters\">Why This Interview Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether readers agree with Heather Mac Donald or think she&#8217;s completely wrong, her interview with John Stossel deserves attention for one reason: it forces a discussion that many media outlets avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her argument isn&#8217;t that police are perfect.  She explicitly acknowledged that there is always room for better training and better policing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her argument is that the country has become fixated on one category of violence while paying insufficient attention to another that claims far more lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a difficult conversation.  It&#8217;s also a radioactive one.
