{"id":246299,"date":"2026-05-28T14:45:44","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T19:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=246299"},"modified":"2026-05-28T14:50:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T19:50:24","slug":"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-estimated-reading-time yoast-reading-time__wrapper\"><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__icon\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" data-icon=\"clock\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" style=\"display:inline-block;vertical-align:-0.1em\" role=\"img\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" stroke-width=\"2\" d=\"M12 8v4l3 3m6-3a9 9 0 11-18 0 9 9 0 0118 0z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__spacer\" style=\"display:inline-block;width:1em\"><\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__descriptive-text\">Estimated reading time: <\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__reading-time\">3<\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__time-unit\"> minutes<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connecticut officially just took another swing at some of America\u2019s most popular handguns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 26, Ned Lamont signed H.B. 5043 into law, targeting so-called \u201cconvertible pistols,\u201d  semiautomatic handguns lawmakers argue could be illegally modified with machine gun conversion devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the backlash from the firearms world was immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NRA-ILA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\" title=\"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns\">blasted<\/a> the law as another attack on law-abiding gun owners, while NSSF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\" title=\"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns\">says<\/a> it plans to challenge the measure in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Connecticut\u2019s New Glock Ban Is Official | HB5043 Signed Into Law\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mWvy4cSvIV0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translation: Connecticut just lit another major <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/people-book-celebrates-gun-owners-across-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\" title=\"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"6084\">Second Amendment<\/a> fuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the new law, the state will ban future manufacture, sale, and importation of many striker-fired pistols beginning October 1, 2026. The legislation specifically targets <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ruger-lcp-max-review-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\" title=\"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"6085\">handguns<\/a> using cruciform trigger bar systems that lawmakers claim could be modified using illegal machine gun conversion devices, often called \u201cswitches\u201d or MCDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the penalties? Not small. Violating the new law could land someone with a Class D felony. For owning or selling a handgun that\u2019s otherwise legal today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No doubt, everybody immediately thought of Glocks.  That\u2019s because critics argue the bill effectively targets some of the most common carry and duty pistols in America under the theory that criminals might illegally modify them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-taurus-tx9-sub-compact-review-duty-dna-for-edc\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/taurus-tx9-sub-compact-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\" title=\"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns\">Taurus TX9 Sub-Compact Review: Duty DNA for EDC<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s just one pretty massive problem with that logic, according to gun rights groups:  The modifications are already wildly illegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal law already makes possessing or installing a machine gun conversion device a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and massive fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSSF Senior Vice President Lawrence G. Keane accused Connecticut lawmakers of punishing ordinary gun owners instead of violent criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo borrow a line from James Carville,\u201d Keane said, \u201c\u2018it\u2019s the criminal, stupid.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today I signed the FY 2027 budget\u270d\ufe0f<br \/><br \/>The largest education investment in state history: $193M more for our schools, $300M into our Early Childhood Education Endowment, and free breakfast for all 500,000 CT students. <br \/><br \/>On time. Then another.  Then another.  And before long, guns that were considered perfectly mainstream five years earlier suddenly become politically radioactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why opponents keep hammering one phrase throughout this fight: \u201ccommon use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since District of <em>Columbia v. Heller<\/em>, courts have repeatedly grappled with whether states can outright ban firearms owned by millions of Americans for lawful purposes like self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And striker-fired pistols absolutely dominate the modern handgun market.  The irony here is almost impossible to miss too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the exact same time Americans are buying more <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/can-center-axis-relock-make-faster-safer-accurate\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\" title=\"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"6083\">concealed carry pistols<\/a> than ever before, states like Connecticut are increasingly targeting the very platforms most people actually carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, criminals using illegal conversion devices remain criminals\u2026 because criminals, shockingly, tend not to follow weapons laws.  Now the next battle moves to the courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-vortex-ace-review-first-round-hit-at-989-yards\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/vortex-ace-ballistic-weather-meter-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\" title=\"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns\">Vortex ACE Review: First-Round Hit at 989 Yards<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, Connecticut isn\u2019t the only state heading down this road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just one day before Lamont signed H.B. 5043, the National Rifle Association, Firearms Policy Coalition, and Second Amendment Foundation filed a federal lawsuit challenging a nearly identical handgun ban recently signed in Maryland by Wes Moore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That law, Senate Bill 334, targets so-called \u201cmachine <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sig-p365-vs-glock-43-vs-sw-shield\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-convertible-pistol-ban\" title=\"Connecticut Just Banned Popular Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"6082\">gun convertible pistols\u201d and effectively bans most Glock-pattern handguns<\/a> beginning January 1, 2027. The lawsuit: <em>National Rifle Association of America v. Moore<\/em>, argues the ban directly violates the Supreme Court\u2019s rulings in<em> District of Columbia v. Heller <\/em>by prohibiting firearms that are clearly in common use for lawful purposes like self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun rights groups also point out that similar legislation has surfaced in places like California, raising growing concerns among firearm owners that states are increasingly targeting mainstream striker-fired pistols under the broader justification of stopping illegal machine gun conversion devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, this probably isn\u2019t staying contained to Connecticut for very long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"
