The shop was reportedly labeled a \u201cprohibited industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s despite the fact that United <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/gun-shop-owner-dies-defending-store-armed-robbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"capital-one-gun-store-debanking-lawsuit\" title=\"NSSF: Capital One Accused of \u2018Illegal Debanking\u2019 Gun Store\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4861\">Gun Shop<\/a> was operating legally, selling firearms to law-abiding customers and previously using the same payment platform without issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Owner Jonathan Bennett said the shutdown came out of nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs an American-owned small business operating legally, we were shocked when Capital One abruptly stopped processing our payments,\u201d Bennett said, adding the company cited vague reasoning tied to a third-party provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That third party (Melio Payments) reportedly pointed back at Capital One. Capital One, in turn, pointed at Melio. Around the same time, federal regulators began taking a harder look at what the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/egregious-straw-purchase-plea-deal-a-slap-in-firearm-industry-face\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"capital-one-gun-store-debanking-lawsuit\" title=\"NSSF: Capital One Accused of \u2018Illegal Debanking\u2019 Gun Store\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4863\">firearm industry<\/a> has long argued: banks were making politically motivated decisions to cut off services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Oliva\u2019s reporting, findings from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) confirmed that large banks had made \u201cinappropriate distinctions\u201d against lawful industries, including firearm-related businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, regulators moved to eliminate \u201creputational risk\u201d as a justification for denying services, essentially removing the ability for banks to blacklist legal businesses based on <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/exclusive-historic-la-newspaper-pulls-pro-gun-article-due\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"capital-one-gun-store-debanking-lawsuit\" title=\"NSSF: Capital One Accused of \u2018Illegal Debanking\u2019 Gun Store\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4864\">political pressure<\/a> or perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where things get interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because if those rules are now in place, cases like this could test how serious regulators are about enforcing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OCC has already signaled that banks engaging in this kind of behavior could face consequences, including scrutiny during licensing reviews and regulatory actions tied to compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, this isn\u2019t just about one gun shop.
