Keane, Bloomberg-backed media outlets are once again pushing a \u201cname-and-shame\u201d narrative.  This time targeting a major California gun retailer over a high-profile criminal case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The accusation? That Turner\u2019s Outdoorsman is somehow responsible for firearms later tied to criminal activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem? That\u2019s a key distinction.  Even the ATF says so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFirearms are normally traced to the first retail seller,\u201d the agency notes, adding that this does <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> indicate wrongdoing by the dealer or original purchaser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words: being listed in trace data doesn\u2019t mean you did anything illegal.  It just means you sold the gun\u2014legally\u2014at some point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-the-data-actually-shows\">What the Data Actually Shows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keane highlights ATF data that paints a very different picture than what\u2019s being implied.  Out of nearly 9,700 firearm trafficking investigations over a five-year period:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Just 1.6% involved licensed firearm dealers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That\u2019s roughly 0.1% of all FFLs nationwide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Straw purchases and private sales account for about 80%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stolen firearms make up another significant portion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So the overwhelming majority of illegal guns aren\u2019t coming from rogue dealers.  They\u2019re coming from individuals breaking the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-narrative-that-doesn-t-add-up\">A Narrative That Doesn\u2019t Add Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even sources quoted in the original reporting admitted something that undercuts the entire argument: Large retailers (especially chain stores) are unlikely to engage in illegal sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t make sense from a business perspective,\u201d one former ATF official acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because licensed dealers operate under intense federal oversight and have every incentive to follow the law.
