While NBC goes to great expense to show you a 3D animated drawing of the problem, nowhere do they actually try to get a gun to fire without pulling the trigger. <\/em><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Yet if you watch the defensive vidoes on RespectRemington.tv<\/a>, their “expert” Tom Butters is clearly shown banging with a sledgehammer on Mr. Yerger’s gun, to no avail. <\/em><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

This letter from the “Oklahoma Forensics Lab Inc.” claims that the testers were able to get the gun to fire without pulling the trigger. But they don’t report on NBC that the report concluded that the gun was not flawed or defective. NBC also makes them sound like a government agency, which they clearly are not. The gun was returned to Remington and as you can see above, tested extensively for other court cases in which that case was attempted to be used as evidence of the faulty CFC. <\/em><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Americans should be outraged at the cheap parlor tricks in this report, all in the name of attacking our gun rights through the back door, hitting the industry in the pocket where it counts. <\/em><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Firearms accidents do happen, mostly because of stupid mistakes that nobody wants to make, but using a photo like this for ratings and controversy is supposed to be outside the realm of honest journalism. Think about the pictures that could be shown on TV about every manner of injury and death. Why do we let them get away with it on gun stories? <\/em><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\nDon’t worry, Blake Shelton isn’t quitting “The Voice” on NBC. That was just to get you to click this and read it. He should though, if he really believes in “representing country values” that he so lectured his contestant ReaLynn this past week. And for everyone reading this, and even those who didn’t click on it, we should all boycott “The Voice” and everything else on NBC until they issue a public apology to Remington. But like Blake Shelton, we won’t. All of us love guns, we love shooting, and we are proud to support the 2nd Amendment, but we really won’t pull the plug on things we like in protest of a perverted hit piece on Remington that was created to attack our gun industry and our 2nd Amendment freedom.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe piece aired on something called Rock Center on April 11th on NBC. It artificially creates a controversy about the fire control mechanism on Remington shotguns and some rifles, and yes, it includes the 870 and the 1100 guns you most likely own and cherish. The host admits that there are tens of millions of these guns in circulation and daily use nationwide, but fails to note the statistical impossibility of their claims. . Remington shotguns are the most common sporting shotguns on the planet, and they have also become the most popular shotguns in law enforcement.\n<\/p>\n

Literally billions of shotgun rounds have been fired from Remington shotguns over the years with no problems at all, but sadly, NBC insisted on airing this piece on a few anecdotal cases with questionable circumstances where a Remington firearm was involved in an injury or death. They also gave a voice to a perverse critic of Remington who has testified as a paid expert against Remington in over 100 injury cases, as well as against a dozen other firearm manufacturers. But at no point does the expert or NBC demonstrate a gun, or even a mechanism, that will fire without the trigger being pulled, and despite some nasty injury pictures, they are not able to mention one case in all of these cases where a civil jury has found a Remington firearm to be faulty. The “dangerous secret” is that your network is biased against guns and that nobody bothers to hold your feet to the fire.\n<\/p>\n

\nNBC, you should be ashamed. America, we should be outraged. Blake Shelton, you should quit buddy.\n<\/p>\n

\nPolitics is about the best way to get people to stop reading an article like this, but if I don’t mention this up front I think it will get lost in the details. As you’ll see, a twelve year old with a clue could watch this video and pick out most of the points I’ll mention, so why on earth would NBC air this, knowing that it is nothing short of libelous, to the extent of scandalous. When it was finally edited and done, they had to know how bad it really was. Why air it? The answer is two, ratings and politics.\n<\/p>\n

On the rating side, everyone loves a controversy. Controversy gets them ratings, ratings brings in money. I almost didn’t embed this so they wouldn’t get paid, but you need to watch it. It cost them a lot to produced this piece. The reporter on this case, Scott Cohn, worked on it for months Remington isn’t going to sue them for libel, so they have no risk in running it. The ad dollars will stack up regardless.\n<\/p>\n

The other things is politics. At the end of the second video Steve Cohn attempts to relieve the fears of Americans that the hit piece was not in fact to try to induce the government to institute new laws governing firearm recalls. But what he didn’t know when he filmed this segment was that Brian Williams, the host, would ultimately introduced the piece with just this issue. I’m sure the writers did this intentionally, knowing the firestorm it would create, but the voters remember the controversy, not the substance. Brian Williams says the following:\n<\/p>\n

\n“As we get into our next story think about this: If a dangerous problem is discovered in our car or our food or medicine the government can force the manufacturer to issue a recall. It may surprise you that if a gun has a dangerous serious defect, there is no federal agency with the power to order a recall. The industry polices itself. Keep that in mind as you watch our next story with CNBC’s Scott Kohn whose been reporting on this for us for months.”\n<\/p>\n

\nThey then proceed to work through two nasty cases where the injured party blames a Remington shotgun for the horrifying injury they received from not handling their firearm safely. Firearms accidents happen, but we choose to own and use our guns, and we know they are potentially dangerous things. Tens of thousands of people die on the highways every year because they choose to drive a car. Thousands of children die in swimming pools because families decide to have a pool, and over a thousand children die every year from suffocation with a plastic bag, mostly shopping bags from grocery stores. Accidents in life happen and people get hurt and die. As a statistical percentage, firearm accidents are far below the rate of far less dangerous hobbies, even soccer.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe claim in the NBC piece is that Remington’s “common fire control” found in its shotguns and some rifles can fire by itself when the gun is jarred by striking it on the butt. The most scary thing is that Mr. Cohn repeats over and over, ” these guns can just go off, with the safety on, without pulling the trigger, just go off.” With the accompanying graphic photos of a total of four injuries and one death, NBC is clearly attempting to scare people, claiming that Remington is “hiding dangerous secrets about its common fire control, the CFC.” Who wouldn’t be scared?\n<\/p>\n

\nGetting people to listen to a story about a supposed big corporation dirty secret in the post Enron world isn’t difficult. The problem is, in the gun industry, even our big corporations aren’t so big. My friend Tom Gresham at Gun Talk\u00ae<\/i> has said, “the entire firearms industry is not as big as Toys R’ Us.” Gun companies can’t afford lengthy litigation. That is why the government passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce Act<\/a>. Colt was effectively put out of business by lawsuits. They are just coming back into the consumer market now. Ruger took a big beating, and Smith & Wesson is still recovering from concessions they made to avoid the wrath of the anti-gunners.\n<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Remington is perceived as a big faceless corporation. A big corporation must have secrets, right? It is easy to suck in a TV viewer with this kind of nonsense. If you go to the website Remington created called RespectRemington.tv, or watch a couple of the videos we have here from it, you’ll see how they only showed half the story on the isolated stories they were able to stir up. If you take the time to watch them all, the whole scenario is shocking and offensive. You just have to ask the question, why?\n<\/p>\n

\nWith the rising tide of an enormous popularity in firearms and shooting, what is the best way to turn that tide? Well this would of course be to tell you that the gun in your closet is going to go off by itself and kill or maim you. Remington is just the lamb being led to the NBC slaughter because Remington is undoubtedly the most endearing brand among avid hunters, a group that is historically not avid shooters and 2nd Amendment supporters when it comes to non-hunting firearms. Tell a voter that his treasured Remington is “hiding a dangerous secret” and, at least their thinking probably goes, that voter is no longer a factor in the anti-2nd Amendment vote. Is this a last gasp from a dying mainstream media that few people watch? I hadn’t heard of “Rock Center” before. Had you?\n<\/p>\n

\nFor specifics, you don’t need to look further than their “expert.” Don’t laugh. Really, don’t laugh, but this idiot doesn’t even bother to show you a CFC dropping the hammer without the trigger being pulled. He is holding one in his hand in the video and he claims, as does Cohn, that with a little bit of debris, this thing can go off by itself. Please, Mr. Expert (Tom Butters is his name, may it be blotted out), next time, can you get a plastic tupperware and fill it with dirt, mud, ashes, something dirty, and dip the CFC in it a few times, then whack it with a hammer. Please, at least show us that this can happen. If you want to get really elaborate, there are in fact tens of millions of these guns out there. Buy a few, find one that will go off by mistake, then put a shell in it and bang the butt on camera until she pops.\n<\/p>\n

\nThere is none of this in the piece whatsoever. On the RespectRemington.tv video about the first case, Mr. Butters is shown banging on the victim’s gun with sledgehammer, unable to get it to fire without pulling the trigger. He then clearly gives up and states that he can’t get it to fire.\n<\/p>\n

\n Even if you look in the statistics in the video, Williams says that in a five month investigation, they uncovered a total of 125 cases involving the CFC, with 75 injuries and 7 deaths, SINCE 1973<\/b>. There are more cases of injuries and deaths by nose hair tweezers since 1973 than a faulty Remington CFC I’m quite sure. They even have the audacity, towards the end of second video in the web version of the piece, to imply that a convicted 2nd degree murderer in jail for 20 years is innocent of killing his wife for the insurance because of a defective Remington CFC. Again, shame on you NBC, and shame on us for not letting them know that this kind of thing cannot be tolerated in attacking our gun companies, the makers of the guns that we hunt with, that we protect our lives with, and that we guard against the threat of tyranny with.\n<\/p>\n

\nWilliams (the narrator) states repeatedly that Remington refused to give them an expert for the case, to defend against the claims of Mr. Butters, yet they quote an expert later, then claim that they weren’t able to talk to talk to him. Where is the “man in the street” shot of him trying to avoid you Steve? The best piece of evidence is a forensic report from the “Oklahoma Forensic Lab Inc., ” clearly not a government entity and just a private company. The NBC video states that the lab report was able to duplicate the behavior of the gun going off without the trigger being pulled. You’d think this would be the smoking gun, and it is billed as such. But strangely, the person involved, who lost part of his hand, never sued Remington. That is something that happens all the time isn’t it? Well it might be the rest of the report, that NBC conveniently leaves out, but that Remington shows on their defense website. The private, paid lab measured a 39 oz. trigger pull on the gun and concluded that it was not a manufacturing defect or design flaw that caused the gun to fire.\n<\/p>\n

\nThey also claim in the piece that they have a letter from a gun dealer going back to 1957 that told Remington that there were problems with the guns with gunsmiths all over, but what has happened since 1957? Couldn’t you find even one gunsmith to go on camera for money who would say that he has seen this problem come into his shop, or that he can demonstrate how this happens regularly? Come on guys? Just one, for money? How hard could that possibly be for hacks like you? But yet it isn’t there.\n<\/p>\n

\nNot being a student of the law, I can’t say whether Remington would have a real libel case against NBC here. I can say that I think they should go on the offensive and try, because with even half the clearly intentional misrepresentations in this video even the dumbed downest civil jury would find for Remington. But the editors are very careful to make sure that the most hardened and unsubstantiated claims come from Scott Cohn in the form of a question, validated by people with no assets, and nothing to lose by going on camera. Remington shouldn’t have to deal with this. They should be able to put their energy and passion into their guns, and into the future of their business. Nothing to lose is the position of the mainstream media these days, and I hope Remington puts them in their place.\n<\/p>\n

Blake Shelton I hope you are reading this, and I hope you do have country values. Because if you do, those of us who are still willing to even watch “The Voice” after this will see an empty chair next week. You are the only part of that show that is giving Idol a run for its money, and NBC doesn’t deserve the genuine care and country values you bring. NBC, you should publicly apologize to Remington, and send them a box of chocolates for not suing you for libel.
