It didn\u2019t take long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within hours of the foiled attack at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association gala, calls for more gun control started circulating. And the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA<\/a>) is pushing back hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The target this time: Brian Stelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb blasted him, calling the commentary \u201cnonsense\u201d and accusing the CNN analyst of skipping over key facts surrounding the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn an analysis, CNN\u2019s Brian Stelter insinuated that nobody will consider tougher gun laws to prevent such an incident,\u201d Gottlieb said. \u201cHe should have looked at the facts before going off half-cocked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to CCRKBA, the suspect at the center of the incident legally purchased both a shotgun and a handgun in California, widely considered one of the most restrictive states in the country when it comes to firearm laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe suspect\u2026had to pass two California background checks and endure two separate waiting periods,\u201d Gottlieb noted. \u201cJust what more does Stelter think could be done?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That point is central to the organization\u2019s argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If one of the strictest regulatory environments in the country didn\u2019t prevent the suspect from acquiring firearms legally, CCRKBA says it raises serious questions about the effectiveness of simply adding more restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gottlieb also took aim at what he described as the broader narrative forming in some media coverage, suggesting the focus on firearms is missing the bigger issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump referred to the suspect as a \u2018whack job,\u2019 and after reading his manifesto, that description seems appropriate,\u201d he said, adding that the writings indicated the attack was premeditated, not impulsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went further, tying the incident to what he described as years of \u201cvile, hate-filled rhetoric\u201d directed at the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was not some spur-of-the-moment act,\u201d Gottlieb said. The criticism didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We find it disgusting and abysmally lazy for any journalist\u2026to engage in gun control poppycock at this point,\u201d he added, contrasting Stelter\u2019s commentary with other outlets that were still working to establish the facts of the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
