And a lawsuit may be coming next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Shooting Sports Foundation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-vows-legal-action-against-marylands-proposed-ban-on-certain-striker-fired-handguns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\">NSSF<\/a>) is vowing legal action if Gov. Wes Moore signs Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/mgawebsite\/Legislation\/Details\/sb0334?ys=2026RS\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\">Bill 334 <\/a>and House <a href=\"https:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/mgawebsite\/Legislation\/Details\/hb0577?ys=2026RS\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\">Bill 557<\/a> into law, arguing the legislation would effectively ban some of the most popular striker-fired pistols in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Maryland lawmakers approve bill banning sales of \u201cmachine gun convertible\u201d pistols\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iZX8RixcXdA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At issue is how the bills define so-called \u201cmachine <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/bigger-is-better-glock-40-gen4-mos-10mm\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4201\">gun<\/a> convertible pistols.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the proposed language, certain semiautomatic handguns (particularly those with a cruciform trigger bar design aka Glocks) could be prohibited based on the claim that they can be modified with an illegal machinegun conversion device (MCD). Those devices, often referred to as \u201cswitches,\u201d are already banned under federal law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-connecticut-moves-forward-with-glock-ban\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/connecticut-moves-forward-with-glock-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\">Connecticut Moves Forward with Glock Ban<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where the NSSF says lawmakers are missing the mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo borrow on a line from James Carville\u2026 \u2018it\u2019s the criminal, stupid,\u2019\u201d said Lawrence G. Keane. \u201cThese bills\u2026 punish law-abiding citizens by infringing on their Second Amendment rights\u2026 instead of enforcing the law and holding criminals accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concern isn\u2019t just theoretical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If enacted, the law would prohibit the manufacture, sale, transfer, and possession of certain striker-fired pistols, with the Maryland State Police tasked with publishing a list of banned models. Notably, many of those same firearms are currently used by <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/the-mil-leo-only-guns-from-your-favorite-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4200\">law enforcement<\/a> agencies across the state, who would be exempt under the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For critics, that carveout only adds fuel to the argument that the law targets citizens rather than criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/alexander-soros-funding-assaults-constitutional-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4203\">NSSF also pointed to the constitutional<\/a> implications, citing the <em>District of Columbia v. Heller <\/em>decision, which held that commonly owned firearms are protected under the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keane made it clear that if the governor signs the bills, the fight will move to the courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNSSF intends to have Maryland\u2019s Attorney General\u2026 explain in court why Maryland willfully violates the rights of her citizens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-newsom-signs-glock-ban-two-more-anti-gun-bills\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/newsom-signs-glock-ban-two-more-anti-gun-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\">Newsom Signs Glock Ban, Two More Anti-Gun Bills<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed ban would take effect January 1, 2027, giving the state time to define exactly which models fall under the restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, NSSF is also reminding <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ak-47-hog-blaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4202\">gun owners that modifying a firearm<\/a> with an illegal conversion device is already a serious federal crime. Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/gun-owners-of-america-national-firearms-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-maryland-ban-handguns\" title=\"NSSF Warns Maryland About Plan to Ban Handguns\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4204\">National Firearms Act<\/a>, possession of such a device can carry up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The broader question now is whether Maryland\u2019s approach, banning the firearm rather than prosecuting illegal modifications, can survive legal scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If
