This pro-suppressor law will ensure that law-abiding Kansans can always legally purchase and possess NFA items like\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4NRdzLpHxh\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"kansas-state-suppressor-ban\" title=\"Kansas Drops State Suppressor Ban\">pic.twitter.com\/4NRdzLpHxh<\/a><\/p>&mdash; American Suppressor Association (@AmSuppressor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmSuppressor\/status\/2042386997659013575?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"kansas-state-suppressor-ban\" title=\"Kansas Drops State Suppressor Ban\">April 9, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s where things get a little nuanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the federal tax itself has reportedly been reduced to $0 under recent legislation, the process (<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/big-numbers-big-rights-over-15-2-million-nics-background-checks-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"kansas-state-suppressor-ban\" title=\"Kansas Drops State Suppressor Ban\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4120\">background checks<\/a>, registration, and approval) still remains in place for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What this Kansas law does is position the state ahead of the curve in case that federal framework changes down the road, something the NSSF and others are actively pushing for through the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hearing-protection-act-reintroduced\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"kansas-state-suppressor-ban\" title=\"Kansas Drops State Suppressor Ban\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4117\">Hearing Protection Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From their perspective, this isn\u2019t about creating something new.  It\u2019s about removing barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSSF\u2019s Lawrence G. Keane framed suppressors as safety equipment, pointing to their role in reducing noise exposure for shooters and hunters.  And the legislative support behind the bill was hard to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is what proactive and commonsense leadership looks like. With Governor Kelly\u2019s signature, Kansas is taking the steps to ensure that its citizens can lawfully obtain, possess and use a hearing protection device when they are removed from the National Firearms Act (NFA), which is long overdue,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-applauds-kansas-gov-laura-kelly-for-signing-law-removing-state-suppressor-prohibitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"kansas-state-suppressor-ban\" title=\"Kansas Drops State Suppressor Ban\">said<\/a> Keane, NSSF\u2019s Senior Vice President &amp; General Counsel. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suppressors are hearing safety devices that make recreational shooting and hunting a safer and more enjoyable activity. We will continue to press to have these devices removed from the NFA so that they are more accessible to the public,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-minute-of-angle-explained-moa-take-the-quiz\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/minute-of-angle-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"kansas-state-suppressor-ban\" title=\"Kansas Drops State Suppressor Ban\">Minute of Angle Explained (MOA) \u2013 Take the Quiz!<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HB 2501 passed with strong bipartisan margins (99-22 in the House and 35-4 in the Senate), suggesting broad agreement, at least within Kansas, that the existing restrictions didn\u2019t make much sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the suppressor piece isn\u2019t the only thing in the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bill could legalize suppressors, short-barreled shotguns in Kansas\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/43MzR5di-Rw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law also includes protections for firearm retailers, giving them civil liability immunity when returning firearms to owners after voluntary hold agreements, something aimed at encouraging <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/5-reasons-safe-acts-gun-ban-list-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"kansas-state-suppressor-ban\" title=\"Kansas Drops State Suppressor Ban\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4119\">safe storage during mental health<\/a> concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also removes certain state-level restrictions on short-barreled rifles (SBRs) and shotgun <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/find-barrel-length-best-ar\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"kansas-state-suppressor-ban\" title=\"Kansas Drops State Suppressor Ban\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4116\">barrel lengths<\/a>, while at the same time increasing penalties for criminal misuse involving those firearms or suppressors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it\u2019s a mixed package, easing access on one side, tightening consequences on the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, the big headline is clear:  Kansas is stepping away from state-level suppressor restrictions.
