It was about building a registry.  And now, with a new rule reportedly in the works under the Trump administration, there\u2019s a chance to roll that back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question is:  How much?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to testimony cited by GOA, ATF leadership is currently reviewing how long those records should be kept, including whether older records even provide meaningful value in criminal investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where things get interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because even ATF\u2019s own data\u2014highlighted in the breakdown\u2014suggests the usefulness of these records drops off fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After about 15 years, the success rate of tracing firearms \u201cfalls off dramatically,\u201d and the agency itself has acknowledged it can\u2019t reliably link trace data to actual criminal prosecutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, the longer records are kept\u2026 the less useful they become.  GOA\u2019s takeaway?  If the data doesn\u2019t justify it, why keep them at all?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why the group isn\u2019t just pushing for a rollback to the old standard, where dealers kept records for 20 years.  They want it gone entirely.  Zero years.  Their argument is rooted in both policy and principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a practical standpoint, they say keeping decades\u2019 worth of records creates a massive database.  One that, when combined with out-of-business dealer records already stored by the ATF, effectively functions as a searchable registry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s not speculation.  GOA points to nearly a billion records currently held by the ATF, many of them digitized and searchable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-henry-new-bear-s-leg-pistols\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/henry-new-bears-leg-pistols\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"goa-kill-atf-registry\" title=\"GOA Pushes to Kill ATF 'Registry'\">Henry: New Bear\u2019s Leg Pistols<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From a constitutional standpoint, they argue that kind of system runs directly against the intent of federal law, specifically the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986, which prohibits the creation of a centralized <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/judge-california-gun-owners-tyrant-registry-protected-first-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"goa-kill-atf-registry\" title=\"GOA Pushes to Kill ATF 'Registry'\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4113\">registry of gun owners<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also a historical angle. But GOA says that\u2019s not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because even under that system, <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/gun-store-turns-records-new-york-state-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"goa-kill-atf-registry\" title=\"GOA Pushes to Kill ATF 'Registry'\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4115\">records from defunct gun stores<\/a> are still transferred to the ATF and kept, effectively extending retention far beyond 20 years in practice.  Stack those timelines together, and you\u2019re looking at the potential for 40 years of traceable ownership data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s exactly what GOA says needs to end.  For now, nothing is finalized.  The proposed rule hasn\u2019t been released yet, and details are still limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when it does drop, GOA is urging gun owners to pay attention and speak up during the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-utah-wildlife-board-pulls-trail-cam-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"goa-kill-atf-registry\" title=\"GOA Pushes to Kill ATF 'Registry'\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4112\">public comment period<\/a>.  Because in their view, this isn\u2019t just about paperwork.
