Existing owners were told they could keep what they already had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No confiscation. No forced turn-ins.  Fast forward to now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this new bill passes, it would make it illegal not just to sell or transfer those firearms but to possess them at all <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/connecticut-moves-forward-with-glock-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"rhode-island-confiscating-guns\" title=\"Rhode Island Confiscating Guns?\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4076\">moving forward<\/a>.  And it doesn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal also sets a deadline, meaning otherwise lawful <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ak-47-hog-blaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"rhode-island-confiscating-guns\" title=\"Rhode Island Confiscating Guns?\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4072\">gun<\/a> owners would be required to get rid of their firearms, either by selling them out of state or transferring them through legal channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-rhode-island-s-grandfathered-gun-owners-just-got-a-wake-up-call\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/rhode-islands-grandfathered-gun-owners-wake-up-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"rhode-island-confiscating-guns\" title=\"Rhode Island Confiscating Guns?\">Rhode Island\u2019s \u2018Grandfathered\u2019 Gun Owners Just Got a Wake-Up Call<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No compensation required.  Just a clock.  And if someone decides not to comply?  Kirk points out the penalties could be severe: up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That raises the obvious question:  What happens if people don\u2019t give them up?  The bill itself doesn\u2019t spell it out.  But as Kirk notes, once possession is banned, enforcement becomes the next issue and that\u2019s where things could get messy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t law yet.  The bill is still moving through the legislative process, with hearings underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the bigger takeaway, according to Kirk, isn\u2019t just Rhode Island.  It\u2019s the pattern.  Start with banning sales.  Promise existing owners they\u2019re safe.  Then come back later and change the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll it takes is one word,\u201d Kirk explains and suddenly everything looks very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/rhode-governor-bans-guns-in-schools-by-executive-fiat\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"rhode-island-confiscating-guns\" title=\"Rhode Island Confiscating Guns?\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4074\">Rhode Island gun<\/a> owners still have time to weigh in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if this moves forward, it could turn what was once framed as a
