She\u2019s calling it public health policy, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston25news.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mass-pushes-hunting-public-health-fix\" title=\"Mass. Pushes Hunting as Public Health Fix\"><em>Boston 25 News<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement comes as the state deals with two growing problems: more deer\u2026 and more issues tied to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mass. Gov. Healey proposes major hunting law changes\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gEjtHjsjf28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State data shows car crashes involving deer are up roughly 51% over the past decade, and last year alone saw more than 11,000 reported cases of tick-borne illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not just Lyme disease anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials say newer, more complex tick-related conditions are on the rise, including Alpha-gal syndrome, a red meat allergy linked to tick bites that the state now wants to track more closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what\u2019s the solution?  More hunters in the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal includes lifting Massachusetts\u2019 long-standing ban on Sunday hunting, easing restrictions on crossbow use, and allowing <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/top-seven-states-public-land-whitetails\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mass-pushes-hunting-public-health-fix\" title=\"Mass. Pushes Hunting as Public Health Fix\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4047\">bow hunting<\/a> as close as 250 feet from homes in certain cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporters say those changes could open up thousands of acres that are currently off-limits, especially in suburban areas where <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-cornell-and-the-usda-tracking-coronavirus-in-deer-populations\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mass-pushes-hunting-public-health-fix\" title=\"Mass. Too many deer.  Not enough pressure.  But here\u2019s the catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less than 1% of Massachusetts residents <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-hunting-in-our-current-situation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mass-pushes-hunting-public-health-fix\" title=\"Mass. Pushes Hunting as Public Health Fix\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4048\">currently hold a hunting<\/a> license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So even if access expands, the question becomes: Who\u2019s actually going to do the hunting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics say these changes won\u2019t move the needle much and argue deer populations have been climbing steadily for decades regardless.  Supporters see it differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They argue this is long overdue and that removing outdated restrictions is the first <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/why-a-new-hate-crime-hotline-is-a-step-toward-disarmament\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mass-pushes-hunting-public-health-fix\" title=\"Mass. Pushes Hunting as Public Health Fix\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4050\">step toward<\/a> getting things under control.  Either way, it\u2019s a shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A blue-state governor openly pushing to <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-trump-officials-hunting-fishing-2-3-million-acres\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mass-pushes-hunting-public-health-fix\" title=\"Mass. Pushes Hunting as Public Health Fix\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4049\">expand hunting<\/a>, not for sport, but for safety.
