That truck later crashed about four miles from the initial scene, and Mallett was found with <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/graphic-mma-fighter-shows-self-inflicted-gunshot-wounds\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"manhunt-ends-when-homeowner-fires-back\" title=\"Manhunt Ends When Homeowner Fires Back\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4009\">gunshot wounds<\/a>. He <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-arkansas-hunter-gored-buck-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"manhunt-ends-when-homeowner-fires-back\" title=\"Manhunt Ends When Homeowner Fires Back\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4008\">later died at the hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that point, Hughes was on foot.  And that\u2019s when things took a turn that hits a lot closer to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deputies say Hughes made his way to another residence and attempted to break in.  But this homeowner wasn\u2019t waiting to find out what happened next.  He was armed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when Hughes tried to force entry, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/dallas-homeowner-explains-why-he-opened-fire-on-tire-thieves\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"manhunt-ends-when-homeowner-fires-back\" title=\"Manhunt Ends When Homeowner Fires Back\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4007\">homeowner opened fire<\/a>, stopping the threat. Hughes was later pronounced dead at the hospital, bringing the manhunt to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like that.  Three people dead. One community shaken. And one homeowner who had seconds to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neighbors described the situation as shocking. People who knew Hughes said they never saw anything like this coming.  And that\u2019s the part that always sticks.
