They pulled real case data from their own files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quick aside: we like these guys. They\u2019re knowledgeable, practical, and usually bring solid legal insight to the table. Historically, officer-involved shootings often happened:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Within 3 feet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In under 3 seconds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With 3 shots or fewer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But officers are typically making arrests or initiating contact. Civilians aren\u2019t handcuffing suspects on the street. That difference matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/3-easy-ways-to-lose-your-gun-rights-without-a-felony\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"3-3-3-rule-civilian-self-defense\" title=\"Does the '3-3-3 Rule' Hold Up for Civilian Self-Defense?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3588\">Armed Attorneys<\/a> asked the real question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Does this <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/concealed-carriers-stop-home-invasion-hold-drug-addled-suspect-at-gunpoint\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"3-3-3-rule-civilian-self-defense\" title=\"Does the '3-3-3 Rule' Hold Up for Civilian Self-Defense?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3590\">hold up for regular concealed carriers?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-their-civilian-data-showed\">What Their Civilian Data Showed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>They analyzed their 30 most recent shooting cases (single attacker, single defender) and found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shots-fired\">\ud83d\udd2b Shots Fired<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>13 of 30 cases involved 3 shots or fewer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Average was about 3.75 to 4 shots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Convictions tended to increase when <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/shots-fired-outside-christian-church-what-do-you-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"3-3-3-rule-civilian-self-defense\" title=\"Does the '3-3-3 Rule' Hold Up for Civilian Self-Defense?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3591\">shots fired<\/a> averaged 7 or more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201c3 shots\u201d part?  It\u2019s the closest part of the rule to holding up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-distance\">\ud83d\udccf Distance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where things really shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Average distance: 9.5 feet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most engagements occurred between 5\u201312 feet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Very few were within 3 feet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/texas-woman-shoots-road-rage-attacker\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"3-3-3-rule-civilian-self-defense\" title=\"Does the '3-3-3 Rule' Hold Up for Civilian Self-Defense?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3592\">Road rage<\/a> cases and vehicle confrontations pushed distances even farther.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottom line: For civilians, it\u2019s rarely a 3-foot contact fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-time\">\u23f1 Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Average duration from draw to resolution: ~6 seconds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Still fast. Still chaotic.  But not quite the 3-second myth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-real-eye-opener-you-might-know-the-attacker\">The Real Eye-Opener: You Might Know the Attacker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One stat stood out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>About 40% of the time, the defender knew the attacker.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Family disputes. Neighbors. Acquaintances. Alcohol-fueled arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t always a stranger in a dark alley. That\u2019s a reality most carriers don\u2019t mentally rehearse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-so-does-3-3-3-hold-up\">So\u2026 Does 3-3-3 Hold Up?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cvibe\u201d holds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s fast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s close.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s over quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But for civilians:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s usually <strong>farther than 3 feet<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It often lasts <strong>closer to 6 seconds<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It averages <strong>around 4 shots<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And legally?  More shots can create more room for prosecutorial scrutiny, even if you were justified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-takeaway-for-ga-readers\">The Takeaway for GA Readers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you carry, train realistically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expect engagement distances closer to 10 feet, not 3.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expect it to happen fast.  But not cinematic fast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand the legal aftermath matters just as much as the trigger press.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And don\u2019t assume it\u2019ll be a stranger.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparation isn\u2019t paranoia.  It\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What\u2019s your take? Does your training reflect these realities?
