All it does is create the false impression lawmakers are doing something, while adding new burdens on firearms retailers and the law-abiding gun owners they serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CCRKBA also <a href=\"https:\/\/ccrkba.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-mexico-gun-ban-bill\" title=\"Gun Groups Hammer New Mexico\u2019s Sweeping Gun Ban Bill\">slammed<\/a> supporters for leaning on the familiar \u201cweapons of war\u201d talking point, noting that millions of Americans legally own the firearms targeted by the bill (including many New Mexicans) without incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the NRA\u2011ILA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/articles\/20260208\/new-mexico-sweeping-gun-control-bill-passes-senate\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-mexico-gun-ban-bill\" title=\"Gun Groups Hammer New Mexico\u2019s Sweeping Gun Ban Bill\">echoed<\/a> those concerns, warning that SB 17 goes far beyond bans and directly threatens the survival of local gun shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-the-attempted-assassination-of-larry-flynt\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/will-the-attempted-assassination-of-larry-flynt\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-mexico-gun-ban-bill\" title=\"Gun Groups Hammer New Mexico\u2019s Sweeping Gun Ban Bill\">The Attempted Assassination of Larry Flynt<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to NRA-ILA, the bill would \u201cseverely undermine the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding New Mexicans\u201d while imposing excessive and costly mandates on firearm dealers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those include invasive site-hardening security requirements, unrealistic 24-hour law-enforcement trace response deadlines, and harsh penalties for technical or paperwork errors, up to and including felony charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation also raises serious privacy concerns. NRA-ILA warns SB 17 would centralize records containing purchaser identities and firearm serial numbers, putting lawful gun owners into a government database with little assurance against misuse or breach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Introduced by Senators Micaelita Debbie O\u2019Malley, Andrea Romero, and Heather Berghmans, SB 17 spans 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/Sessions\/26%20Regular\/bills\/senate\/SB0017.HTML\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-mexico-gun-ban-bill\" title=\"Gun Groups Hammer New Mexico\u2019s Sweeping Gun Ban Bill\">pages<\/a> and would criminalize ownership of firearms and magazines commonly owned across the country.  All while supporters openly acknowledge the bill will not impact criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both CCRKBA and NRA-ILA are urging New Mexico gun owners to contact their representatives as the bill moves to the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As NRA-ILA put it, the organization remains \u201con the ground in the Roundhouse working to defeat this extreme legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For New Mexico gun owners, the message is clear: SB 17 isn\u2019t about crime.  It\u2019s about control.
