A new bill introduced in Virginia would slap a $500 state excise tax on every retail sale of a firearm suppressor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

House Bill 207, prefiled<\/a> on January 7, 2026, and formally offered on January 14, would create an entirely new section of Virginia\u2019s tax code dedicated solely to suppressors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $500 tax is undoubtedly meant to impede suppressor ownership. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Under the proposal, licensed firearms dealers would be required to collect a $500 excise tax per suppressor sold beginning July 1, 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tax would apply to all civilian retail sales in the Commonwealth. Exemptions would be carved out only for sales to federal, state, or local government agencies and law-enforcement officers purchasing suppressors for official duty use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revenue generated by the tax would be deposited directly into Virginia\u2019s general fund. With no requirement that the money be earmarked for public safety, law enforcement<\/a>, or hearing-protection programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill defines a firearm suppressor<\/a> broadly as \u201cany device or combination of parts designed to silence, muffle, or diminish the report of a firearm.\u201d And applies the tax regardless of caliber or firearm type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If enacted, the proposal would impose a new $500 state tax on suppressor<\/a> purchases. Significantly increasing the out-the-door cost despite the federal government eliminating<\/a> the $200 NFA tax stamp as of January 1, 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the federal fee is gone, buyers would still face state sales tax, dealer fees, transfer costs, and the lengthy federal approval process required for NFA<\/a> registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics argue the proposal amounts to a targeted financial barrier aimed squarely at discouraging lawful ownership of a federally<\/a> regulated accessory that remains legal under both federal law and Virginia law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporters, meanwhile, frame the measure as a revenue tool layered onto an already regulated market. One that has just seen its long-standing federal cost barrier removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Committee referral for HB 207 is still pending, and no hearing date has yet been announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
