But according to John Lott, the data shows the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\">CPRC<\/a>), recently appeared on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/StuDoesAmerica\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\">Stu Does America<\/a>&#8221; on The Blaze Podcast Network to discuss his latest article published at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/12\/08\/doj-lawsuits-against-gun-control-policies-especially-protect-the-weak\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\">The Federalist<\/a><\/em>. His core argument: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/the-best-modern-combat-proven-handguns-shotguns-and-rifles\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2262\">modern gun<\/a> control policies disproportionately harm minorities, women, and low-income Americans.  The very groups politicians claim to be helping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"On the Blaze TV\u2019s\u00a0Stu Does America: To Discuss How Gun Control Fails Minority Communities\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y1k5I0zhUig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion centered on recent Department of Justice lawsuits challenging restrictive gun laws, with critics arguing such cases fall outside the Civil Rights Division\u2019s mission. Lott disagrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are exactly the types of people civil rights laws are supposed to protect,\u201d he explained, pointing out that gun control policies routinely raise costs and create bureaucratic barriers that wealthier, politically connected citizens can navigate. But poorer Americans cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-banish-12-on-a-browning-a5-changed-my-hunt\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-banish-12-browning-a5-shotgun-suppressor-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\">Banish 12 On A Browning A5 Changed My Hunt<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the clearest examples, Lott says, is the background check system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1998, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) has issued roughly 5.1 million initial denials. <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/gun-control-advocates-threaten-court-packing-again-as-americans-embrace-gun-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2264\">Gun control advocates<\/a> often cite that number as proof the system stops dangerous criminals. But Lott says that framing is deeply misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are <em>initial<\/em> denials, not confirmed prohibitions. According to Lott, more than 99 percent of those denials are mistakes, usually caused by name and birthdate similarities. Because background checks often rely on phonetic name matching rather than full identifying data, law-abiding buyers with common names are flagged, especially within racial and ethnic groups where naming patterns overlap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result, Lott argues, is that lawful Black and Hispanic gun buyers are disproportionately delayed or blocked from exercising their rights. Fixing those errors isn\u2019t simple, either. Appeals can cost $3,000 or more, placing them far out of reach for many families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That error rate shows up clearly in enforcement statistics. In 2022 alone, NICS issued more than 131,000 denials, yet prosecutors brought just 18 indictments, a prosecution rate of roughly 0.014 percent. If private employers ran background checks with that level of inaccuracy, Lott says, they\u2019d be sued into oblivion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem isn\u2019t limited to background checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-glock-gen-6-first-look-evolution-not-revolution\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/glock-gen-6-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\">Glock Gen 6 First Look: Evolution, Not Revolution<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lott pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/los-angeles-county-sheriffs-office-playing-favorites-gun-permits\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2263\">Los Angeles County<\/a> as a real-world example of how discretionary permitting systems skew toward elites. Prior to the Supreme Court\u2019s <em>Bruen<\/em> decision, fewer than 300 <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sig-p365-vs-glock-43-vs-sw-shield\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2261\">concealed carry<\/a> permits existed in a county with more than eight million adults. Permit holders were overwhelmingly wealthy, politically connected men. Women, Black residents, and Hispanics were dramatically underrepresented, despite facing similar or higher crime risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cost barriers produce similar outcomes elsewhere. Illinois charges roughly $450 for a <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/emily-miller-gets-d-c-concealed-carry-permit\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lott-gun-control-laws-hurt-people\" title=\"Lott: Gun Control Laws Hurt the People They Claim to Protect\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2265\">concealed carry permit<\/a>, while Indiana charges $0. Unsurprisingly, Indiana sees far higher permit participation in high-crime, low-income areas, while Illinois permits are concentrated among affluent suburban residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGun control doesn\u2019t disarm criminals,\u201d Lott argued. \u201cIt disarms the people most likely to be victims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His conclusion was blunt: when gun ownership becomes expensive, discretionary, and bureaucratic, it stops being a right and starts being a privilege reserved for the wealthy and well-connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For communities facing the highest crime rates, Lott
