Amazon boxes are stacking up, Ring cameras are working overtime, and thieves are cruising neighborhoods like it\u2019s Black Friday every day. It\u2019s frustrating. It\u2019s infuriating. One in the torso, one in the foot; both were rushed to the hospital. One remains in critical condition but is expected to survive, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5atlanta.com\/news\/911-calls-reveal-moments-after-police-say-homeowner-shot-2-porch-pirates\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"dont-shoot-porch-pirates\" title=\"Holiday Reminder: Don't Shoot Porch Pirates!\"><em>FOX 5 Atlanta<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The homeowner? He\u2019s sitting in the Fulton <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/plan-to-decarcerate-la-county-jails-withdrawn-after-facing-widespread-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"dont-shoot-porch-pirates\" title=\"Holiday Reminder: Don't Shoot Porch Pirates!\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2077\">County Jail facing<\/a> two counts of aggravated assault, plus additional charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atlanta police were blunt about it. Yes, a property crime was occurring. Yes, packages were being stolen. But deadly force to stop a theft? That\u2019s a fast track to prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This case popped up the same week <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nightly-news\/video\/dramatic-911-calls-released-after-homeowner-shoots-alleged-teen-porch-pirates-254537285794\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"dont-shoot-porch-pirates\" title=\"Holiday Reminder: Don't Shoot Porch Pirates!\">NBC News<\/a><\/em> highlighted just how massive the porch piracy problem has become. An estimated 104 million packages were stolen last year, averaging 250,000 packages a day, costing Americans roughly $15 billion. Chicago, New York, Miami, Houston, and Baltimore top the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to understand the anger. You work hard, order gifts, and some dirtbag helps himself. But none of that changes the legal reality: deadly force is for stopping an immediate threat to life.
