When Digest writer Jim Maybrick ran PPU 115-grain FMJ over his chronograph, it averaged 1,158 fps from a 4-inch Glock-pattern pistol and 1,401 fps from a 16-inch Henry Homesteader. Same box of ammo. Very different bullet. Muzzle rise and concussion are easy to live with, so new shooters settle in fast, and if you buy the right model, it eats the same magazines as the pistol on your nightstand.

It is not a rifle cartridge, though, and nobody should pretend otherwise. Travis Pike, testing an AR-pattern 9mm for the Digest, called 100 yards about the max for the round, with bullets dropping 10 to 15 inches out there. Inside 50 yards, these guns are boring in the best possible way. Boring is what you want at 2 a.m.

Every gun below is a true carbine: rifle configured, with a barrel of 16 inches or longer. No braced pistols, no gray areas, no NFA paperwork. Prices run from a $364 Hi-Point to a SIG that lists at $2,399.99, and the cheap one helped a Digest writer earn a Grand Master card, which should humble a few people. Whatever you buy, budget for a red dot. No locking lugs, just a heavy bolt and a spring holding the case shut until pressure drops. It is simple, cheap and reliable, and it kicks harder than a 9mm has any right to, because all that bolt mass is slamming back and forth. Travis Pike has said a blowback 9mm can feel a lot like a 5.56 rifle in the recoil department.

Makers fight that in different ways. Ruger hangs a tungsten dead-blow weight on the PC Carbine’s bolt. Daniel Defense uses a hydraulic buffer. Henry tucks a reciprocating mass inside the Homesteader’s forearm. SIG skips the whole problem with a gas piston in the MPX, which is a big part of why it costs what it costs.

Pick the Magazine Before the Gun

This decision matters more than the brand name. Glock owners can run the Ruger (with its included magwell), the KelTec SUB2000 GLK and the Henry Homesteader in its Glock magwell version. M&P shooters get the Smith & Wesson FPC, and Henry builds a SIG/M&P version of the Homesteader too. The CZ Scorpion and the Daniel Defense PCC share Scorpion magazines, which Daniel Defense said at SHOT Show 2024 usually run $15 to $20. The SIG MPX and the Hi-Point use their own.

None of that is a deal breaker. A carbine with one magazine, though, is a range toy. Buy spares the same day.

Sixteen Inches Is the Line

Under federal law a rifle needs a barrel of at least 16 inches. Shorter than that and it is a short-barreled rifle with NFA paperwork attached. Everything on this list clears the bar from the factory. State rules on magazine capacity, threaded barrels and folding stocks are a different animal, and several of these guns come in compliant versions. Check your state before you fall in love with one.

Folding, Takedown or Fixed

Storage drives more buying decisions than anyone admits. The FPC and the SUB2000 fold in half to roughly 16 inches. The Ruger comes apart at the barrel with a twist. The Scorpion’s stock folds. The Henry, the Daniel Defense and the Hi-Point stay full length, which is fine in a safe and annoying behind a truck seat. If the gun will live in a vehicle or a pack, our best folding firearms roundup goes deeper on that whole category.

Sights, Optics and Muzzle Threads

The Ruger, CZ, Henry and Hi-Point come with iron sights. The FPC and Daniel Defense ship with none, so plan on a red dot from day one. Most of this list uses 1/2×28 muzzle threads, the common 9mm pattern. The SIG MPX is the oddball with an M13.5×1 thread, so check your suppressor mount or muzzle device before you assume it fits.

Weight and Price

The SUB2000 weighs 4.2 pounds. The Daniel Defense weighs 7.05. You feel that difference on a sling, and you feel it again in recoil, where a little extra mass helps. Price runs a similar spread, from $364 for the Hi-Point to $2,399.99 for the MPX. Whatever you save, spend it on magazines, a weapon light and practice ammo. That stuff wins more fights than a nicer receiver.

Ranked: The 8 Best 9mm Rifles and PCC Carbines of 2026

1. Ruger PC Carbine: Best for Most Shooters (2026)

Ruger built a 9mm carbine by scaling up the 10/22, and Clay Martin, who reviewed it twice for the Digest, called that a feature, not a shortcut. Ruger has built something like 5 million 10/22s. They understand blowback. The PC Carbine adds a tungsten dead-blow weight to the bolt, and Clay said the recoil was so light that his first shot felt like a misfire.

It shoots, too. His first test gun put three shots touching, something he called very uncommon for a PCC. On the chassis model he scoped it, put it on a bipod and shot 1 inch at 50 meters with Hornady 115-grain XTP.

Read our full Ruger PC Carbine review here.

The practical stuff is why it sits on top. It ships set up for Ruger SR-Series and Security-9 magazines with a Glock magwell in the box, the charging handle and magazine release swap sides, and the takedown lever splits it in two. Clay put that at about 10 seconds. It launched at $649 when he reviewed it; Ruger now lists the standard model at $799. Still a lot of rifle for the money. Want an M-LOK handguard and an AR stock? Jon Hodoway tested the original EVO 3 S1 Carbine, passed it to half a dozen shooters and watched every one of them figure out the controls with zero instructions. He loaded snap caps into a magazine to force malfunctions, and the MP5-style non-reciprocating charging handle had shooters back on target in no time. He swapped his red dot for a Nightforce scope just to see how small it would shoot, and Hornady 115-grain Critical Defense went 1.24 inches for five at 50 yards. The Timney trigger averaged 4 pounds 13 ounces. The short-stroke gas piston keeps it out of the heavy-bolt blowback game entirely.

Read our full SIG MPX PCC review here.

The catch is money. SIG lists the MPX PCC at $2,399.99, and it runs MPX magazines and an M13.5×1 muzzle thread instead of the usual 1/2×28. Jeff’s main complaint was the long handguard, which runs past the barrel shoulder and blocks some larger comps and suppressors. He also found the magazine release sits about a quarter inch farther from the grip than an AR’s, enough to fumble a couple of reloads under the timer until he got used to it.

Key Specs

Caliber: 9mm Luger

Capacity: 35-round MPX magazine included

Weight: 6.63 lb

Length/Barrel: 35.3 in overall; 16 in barrel, M13.5×1 thread

Action: Gas piston

Sights/Optic Cut: Optics-ready, M-LOK handguard

MSRP: $2,399.99

Pros

Two failures in 2,000-plus rounds, both blamed on handloads

1.24-inch best group at 50 yards in our test

Timney trigger from the factory

Folding, five-position stock

Three-chamber compensator

Cons

Most expensive gun on this list

Proprietary MPX magazines

M13.5×1 thread needs adapters for common 9mm devices

Handguard blocks some larger muzzle devices and suppressors

🛒 Check Current Price for SIG MPX PCC on GunsAmerica

4. The Homesteader puts a 9mm blowback action in American walnut, and it looks like it belongs in a barn instead of a tactical catalog. Jim Maybrick tested the M-LOK version for the Digest and admitted his PCC experience was about as close to zero as it gets. The rifle did not care.

He ran 300 rounds without a failure to fire or cycle and only realized afterward that he had never lubed it. Off the bench at 50 yards with the factory irons, Igman 124-grain FMJ printed 2-inch groups. Offhand, he rang 8-inch steel past 100 yards with regularity once he worked out the holdover. The trigger broke at 4 1/2 pounds.

Read our full Henry Homesteader M-LOK review here.

The standard Homesteader lists at $928 with Henry’s own 5- and 10-round magazines. Jim’s gripes: the 14-inch length of pull runs long, there is no independent bolt release, and at 6.6 pounds it is heavier than a 9mm really needs to be. Daniel Defense built it around CZ Scorpion magazines and a heavy-mass hydraulic bolt carrier meant to tame direct blowback, and at SHOT Show 2024 the company walked Riley Baxter through the details: mirrored controls, a reinforced bolt catch so it will not shear, and receivers about 5/8 inch shorter than a standard AR’s. It takes AR handguards, furniture and triggers.

Read our SHOT Show first look at the Daniel Defense PCC here.

That is a first look, not a range review, so weigh it accordingly. It is accurate, soft shooting, takes Glock magazines and costs $799. That covers most people.

Specific reasons do exist. Competitors who want a gun that just runs should save up for the SIG MPX PCC. If you want a folding stock and MP5 manners for the house, get the Scorpion 3+ Carbine, but check the current price first. If the carbine is going to live in a truck or a pack, the M&P FPC folds without wrecking your optic, and the SUB2000 does it at 4.2 pounds. AR people will like the Daniel Defense. Walnut people will like the Henry. And if money is tight, the Hi-Point works, as long as you are willing to fix what it gets wrong.

Whatever you pick, buy more magazines than you think you need, zero a red dot, and run your defensive load through it before you trust it at night.
