That meant no suppressor, SBR, or other NFA transfers could be processed, effectively freezing lawful firearm transactions for more than two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams said the ASA began lobbying efforts in early September, anticipating the impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe fought to get the NFA examiners back to work because constitutionally protected rights shouldn\u2019t stop just because Congress can\u2019t pass a funding bill,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-coordination-with-lawmakers\"><strong>Coordination with Lawmakers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The push to resume NFA operations gained bipartisan attention through Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representative Ben Cline (R-VA), lead sponsor of the Hearing Protection Act (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/404\/text\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"asa-return-nfa-examiners-during-shutdown\" title=\"ASA Secures Return of NFA Examiners During Shutdown\">HPA<\/a>), organized a letter with 29 House members urging ATF to reinstate examiners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following consultation with ASA, House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) also contacted the administration to support the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhen our committee found out that the federal employees responsible for processing suppressor applications were furloughed, we immediately worked with the Trump administration to ensure our Second Amendment rights were preserved,\u201d Jordan <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/doj-restarts-nfa-processing-after-industry-push\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"asa-return-nfa-examiners-during-shutdown\" title=\"ASA Secures Return of NFA Examiners During Shutdown\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cWe\u2019re thankful the administration took swift action to correct the situation and resume processing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>By October 20, the ATF authorized the return of NFA examiners, ending the 20-day pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-ahead\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams emphasized that this development sets a precedent for future shutdowns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMoving forward, NFA examiners should be deemed essential from day one, meaning suppressor and NFA transfers won\u2019t be interrupted again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He also underscored that the issue illustrates deeper flaws in the National Firearms Act system itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis entire episode is another reminder why the NFA should not exist in the first place,\u201d Williams said. \u201cWe\u2019re continuing to fight for full deregulation of suppressors and the dismantling of the NFA altogether.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2
