NSSF is deeply grateful to DOJ &amp; ATF for recognizing the importance of ensuring <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/2A?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-restarts-nfa-processing-after-industry-push\" title=\"DOJ Restarts NFA Processing After Industry Push\">#2A<\/a> rights aren\u2019t held up by federal gov\u2019t shutdowns.<\/p>&mdash; NSSF\u2014The Firearm Industry Trade Association (@NSSF) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NSSF\/status\/1979185458564464731?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-restarts-nfa-processing-after-industry-push\" title=\"DOJ Restarts NFA Processing After Industry Push\">October 17, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/nssfpdf.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/KeaneNSSFLetter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-restarts-nfa-processing-after-industry-push\" title=\"DOJ Restarts NFA Processing After Industry Push\">letter<\/a>, NSSF argued that halting these workflows \u201crepresents an infringement on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans,\u201d adding, \u201cAmericans\u2019 Second Amendment rights cannot be suspended because Congress has failed to fund the federal government,\u201d said Lawrence G. Bersa M2XI 9mm Review<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Suppressor Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/americansuppressorassociation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-restarts-nfa-processing-after-industry-push\" title=\"DOJ Restarts NFA Processing After Industry Push\">ASA<\/a>) also pressed for a restart and says the push worked. According to ASA, \u201cthe ATF\u2019s NFA examiners are returning to work to resume the processing of applications,\u201d after it worked \u201cwith the White House, Office of Management &amp; Budget, Department of Justice, ATF, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and Rep. Ben Cline.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASA called the move \u201ca major win for law-abiding gun owners and a win for 2A rights amid the shutdown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan credited swift executive action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen our Committee found out that the federal employees responsible for processing suppressor applications were furloughed, we immediately worked with the Trump Administration to ensure our Second Amendment rights were preserved,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are thankful the Trump Administration took swift action to correct the situation and the processing of applications will immediately resume,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube matters:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Form 2<\/strong> filings keep the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record (NFRTR) current so newly made\/imported items can legally enter commerce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Form 3<\/strong> approvals allow wholesalers and dealers to keep product moving to local retailers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Form 4<\/strong> approvals are what consumers need to lawfully take possession of suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and short-barreled shotguns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>NSSF also noted that suppressors are legal in 42 states and used by more than 3 million law-abiding owners, and that resuming Form 4s does not add burden to FBI NICS (which has continued operating) since each suppressor transfer already requires a background check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottom line: DOJ\u2019s decision to restart NFA processing should start unclogging the pipeline for manufacturers, FFLs, and buyers alike. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll watch how quickly ATF examiners chew through the backlog and whether all NFA\/Import functions come fully online as agencies settle into their shutdown operating posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
