Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has come to terms with the fact that voters are done toeing the line when it comes to major partisan political issues \u2013 including gun control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acknowledging the shift,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebulwark.com\/p\/what-a-bigger-tent-democratic-party-could-look-like\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">Murphy recently told a crowd<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cthe fastest-growing share of the electorate are socially and culturally conservative voters who are economically populist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This awakening is fueling a resurgence of American pride and a collective desire to return to foundational principles, starting with the First and Second Amendments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Senate Should Not Fund Democracy&#039;s Destruction\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5kuOBmwejNY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s not just a political shift, it\u2019s a cultural re-centering with a seismic effect so impressive that it has antigun politicians like Sen. Murphy scrambling for level ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the future of our republic and the future of our party now depends on us building a big-tent party\u2026 and really being purposefully more permissive about who we let in\u2026,\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebulwark.com\/p\/what-a-bigger-tent-democratic-party-could-look-like\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">the Senator went on to say<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, for Sen. Antigun politicians like&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/democratic-presidential-aspirant-has-big-gun-control-decision-to-make\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">California Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a><\/strong>, Sen. Murphy and others are realizing that to stay in office, they might need to abandon partisan dogma, particularly when it comes to gun control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-industry-liability-lie\">Industry Liability Lie<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Murphy may understand his base has shifted center-right and recognize he and his fellow Democrats need to build a big-tent party for it to survive, but his own words suggest that ground may be hard to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just one month ago, on September 2, 2025, Sen. Murphy played partisan politics in a Facebook video rebuking President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=24222697264077480\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">claiming<\/a><\/strong>, \u201c\u2026this administration is going to do anything other than implement every single thing that the gun lobby and gun industry is asking for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When discussing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/download\/nssf-factsheet-protection-of-lawful-commerce-in-arms-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">PLCAA<\/a><\/strong>) in April 2025,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstimes.com\/news\/article\/ct-lawyer-time-most-influential-josh-koskoff-20282665.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">Sen. Murphy stated<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cFor almost two decades, the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act prevented gun manufacturers from being held accountable for their role in the uniquely American epidemic of gun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/7-creedmoor-the-new-6-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">Is 7 Creedmoor the new 6.5?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 5, 2025, when discussing the PLCAA,&nbsp; Sen.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.murphy.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/murphy-blumenthal-colleagues-introduce-bicameral-bill-to-repeal-the-gun-industrys-legal-liability\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">Murphy stated<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cThere\u2019s absolutely no reason why the gun industry should get special treatment when it comes to negligence. Their immunity from lawsuits effectively gives them a license to kill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He failed to mention that The Washington Post, CNN, PolitiFact, the Associated Press and others all&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/president-bidens-new-repeated-gun-industry-lies\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">fact checked and rebuked<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;former President Joe Biden for making, and often repeating, that same false claim. \u201cGun manufacturers can certainly be sued\u2026Biden is wrong to say gun manufacturers are alone [with immunity],\u201d was the Washington Post\u2019s take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unconstitutional-universal-background-checks\">Unconstitutional Universal Background Checks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Murphy had quite a bit to say about background checks in September 2019 when he, along with more than 20 Democratic senators, held the Senate floor to shame Republicans for refusing to agree to \u201ccommon sense legislation\u201d and demanding action on gun violence prevention legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his Senate floor remarks Sen.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.murphy.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/murphy-to-republican-colleagues-background-checks-work\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">Murphy falsely claimed<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cTo explain our abnormally high rate of gun violence\u2026 you have to tell a story of the proliferation of dangerous weapons, of the ability of almost anyone, regardless of their criminal history or their history of illness, to be able to get their hands on a weapon\u2026 So, whether you want anecdotal evidence, or statistical data, I\u2019ve got it all, background checks work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never mind that to lawfully exercise Second Amendment rights by purchasing a firearm from a highly-regulated federal firearm retailer, the purchaser must pass an FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) verification and submit an ATF Form 4473 attesting that the firearm they are purchasing is, in fact, for them \u2013 and not someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And never mind that the universal background checks that Sen. Murphy badly want&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/government-relations\/factsheets\/universal-background-checks\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">are federally prohibited by law<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and unworkable without a national firearm registry of privately owned firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-assault-weapon-ban-white-whale\">\u2018Assault Weapon\u2019 Ban White Whale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If there\u2019s one restriction Sen. Murphy and his allies want more than any other, it\u2019s likely to ban the sale and possession of Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs), or the popular semiautomatic centerfire rifles like the AR-15. They mislabel them \u201cassault weapons\u201d and Sen. Murphy is all too eager to echo calls for them to be banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAssault weapons are designed for one thing: to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible,\u201d the senator falsely suggested. \u201cThese are weapons of war that have no place in our communities, and its long past time we treated them that way,\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.murphy.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/murphy-blumenthal-39-colleagues-reintroduce-assault-weapons-ban\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">Sen. Murphy said in April 2025<\/a><\/strong>, the same month he joined U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) to reintroduce a federal&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/5274890-democrats-reintroduce-assault-weapons-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">\u201cassault weapons\u201d ban<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He might want to ask his \u201cbig tent\u201d voters how they would respond to a ban on MSRs. After all, there are more than&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/u-s-sen-heinrich-goes-all-in-on-gun-control-with-unserious-move-to-address-serious-criminal-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">30 million<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;MSRs in circulation. To put that in perspective, that\u2019s more common than Ford F-150s on the road today (the most popular selling pickup truck in America). As&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/ar-15-rifle-mass-shootings-semiautomatic-weapon-rcna84193\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">NBC News reported<\/a><\/strong>, MSRs were also a popular among the more than&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/update-make-that-26-million-new-first-time-gun-owners-since-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senator-murphy-argues-for-dem-big-tent\" title=\"Senator Murphy Argues for Dem \u2018Big Tent\u2019 But His 2A Record Says Otherwise\">26 million<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;first-time firearm purchasers over the past five years \u2013 including millions of self-described Independent and Democratic voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reading-the-tea-leaves\">Reading the Tea Leaves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankel said, \u201cWhen we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves,\u201d and the saying is most apropos to Senator Murphy\u2019s current situation. Americans have changed their situation in favor of Second Amendment rights and the ball is now in Sen. Murphy\u2019s court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Founding Fathers crafted the Second Amendment as a living safeguard to guarantee the rights of American citizens \u2013 not only in their lifetime, but for all time, including advancements in technology and societal changes.
