Thermal reads heat, so it works in total darkness and through light fog and brush, and it is the better tool for spotting hogs, coyotes and people. Night vision amplifies the light that is already there, so it shows faces, signs, branches and terrain, and it is the better tool for identification and for moving around at night. Most night hunters scan with thermal. Most people clearing a dark house or walking a trail would rather have night vision.

Digest night optics writer Mitchell Graf has logged roughly 2,000 hours behind night vision and about the same behind thermal, and his pig hunting buddies keep learning the same lesson. Hunt with night vision alone and you can miss pigs in the brush at 50 yards that a thermal shows plainly. Try to read a road sign or walk a creek bottom with only a thermal and you will want the night vision back. moonlight, starlight and near infrared light and amplifies it. It needs some light, or an infrared illuminator, to work.

Thermal detects the heat that every object gives off. It needs no light at all.

Night vision shows texture, faces, signs and terrain well. Thermal shows warm bodies that pop out of the background, even in brush.

Night vision sees through glass, like a car windshield or a window. Thermal does not see through glass or water.

Thermal sees through smoke, dust and light fog better than night vision. Neither sees through walls.

Thermal works the same day or night. Analog night vision can be damaged by bright light.

How Night Vision Works

Traditional night vision is called image intensification, often shortened to I2. An objective lens gathers ambient light from the moon, stars and nearby artificial sources, including the low end of the infrared spectrum your eye cannot see. A photocathode turns that light into electrons, a micro-channel plate multiplies them, and a phosphor screen turns them back into a bright image. Mitchell’s shorthand for the process is “basically dark magic,” and he is not wrong. The result is a sharp, real-time picture with good depth cues, which is why soldiers and police walk, drive and shoot under it.

The catch is that there must be some light. In a closed room or a cave with no light at all, an image intensifier shows nothing unless you add an infrared illuminator. Our Streamlight VIR Pro review covers a rifle light with a 940nm infrared mode that our tester found useful to about 300 yards.

Night Vision Generations Explained

Night vision tubes are sorted into generations. The labels are partly marketing, but they still tell you roughly what you are buying.

Gen 0 devices go back to the late 1930s, including work by AEG for the German army. They depended on large active infrared illuminators and had poor resolution. Today they are collector items.

Gen I arrived around the Vietnam War era and amplified ambient light roughly 1,000 times. This is the original starlight scope. Mitchell puts the useful range of these older devices around 75 yards, with tube life around 1,500 hours.

Gen II added the micro-channel plate, which pushed amplification to roughly 20,000 times, sharpened the edges of the image, and stretched tube life to around 5,000 hours. Mitchell rates the useful image out to 200 yards or more, depending on conditions.

Gen III uses a gallium arsenide photocathode and is the standard for serious civilian, police and military use, with amplification roughly 30,000 to 50,000 times and tube life past 10,000 hours. The AN/PVS-14 monocular is the best known Gen III device.

Filmless and auto-gated tubes are sometimes sold as Gen III+ or Gen IV. There is no single agreed definition for those names, so judge a tube by its published specs, not the label.

Tube Specs That Matter

Resolution, in line pairs per millimeter, is how well the tube separates fine detail. Think 4K versus 1080p.

Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is how much static you see. Higher is better, especially on dark nights.

Figure of merit (FOM) is resolution multiplied by SNR, and it is the number most buyers shop by. Licentia Arms, quoted in Mitchell’s explainer, uses 1792 as a solid milspec tube, 2000 as high performance, and 2376 as aviation level.

Equivalent background illumination (EBI) is the glow a tube makes with no light coming in. Lower means better performance in very low light.

Blems are dark spots from manufacturing, drops, or bright light and lasers. Blooming is the halo around light sources, worst on older tubes.

Analog vs Digital Night Vision

Digital night vision uses a camera sensor and a screen instead of an intensifier tube. It costs far less, it can show color, and most units record what you see. That is the good news.

Here is the rest of it. In Mitchell’s experience, nearly all digital scopes and monoculars lean on an onboard infrared illuminator to see past about 10 yards on a cloudy night, and that illuminator glows like a porch light to anyone else wearing night vision. Shine it through a window and it blooms off the glass. Fog looks as bad as it does to the naked eye, or worse. There is also a small lag between the world and the screen. It is only a fraction of a second, but on a helmet, or shooting on the move, it is enough to scramble you.

Analog (tube)

Digital (sensor and screen)

Thermal

What it sees

Amplified reflected light, roughly 780 to 1,000 nm

Visible and near infrared light, and some units show color

Emitted heat (long wave and mid wave infrared)

Needs light?

Some, or an IR illuminator

Usually an IR illuminator in true darkness

No

Daylight use

No. Bright light can burn the tube

Yes

Yes

Through glass

Yes

Yes without the illuminator, poorly with it

No

Records video

Usually not

Usually yes

Many models

Best for

Navigation, movement, identification

Budget entry, recording, static observation

Detection and scanning

Analog still wins where it counts for movement. A single tube PVS-14 gives about a 40 degree field of view and runs about 40 hours on one CR123A. Binocular setups feel more natural, but without special housings they keep that same 40 degree view. At the extreme, the four-tube GPNVG gives 97 degrees, and Mitchell’s explainer listed it at about $40,000. If your budget is tight, our night vision buyer’s guide recommends a quality digital device over a bargain analog tube. Just know what you are giving up.

Green vs White Phosphor

Analog tubes display the image in green or white phosphor. Green was the original choice, because human eyes are most sensitive to green and it is easy on them over a long night. White phosphor now sells as the premium option. Mitchell has run both and prefers white because he picks up more detail, but it usually costs more, and a good green tube beats a mediocre white one.

How Thermal Imaging Works

Thermal devices do not use visible light at all. A sensor called a microbolometer reads the long wave infrared energy, which is heat, coming off everything in the scene. The front lens is germanium, an expensive material that passes those wavelengths, and it is a big part of why thermals cost what they do. People, animals and running engines are usually warmer than rocks, trees and dirt, so they stand out. You can set the display to white hot or black hot, and many units also offer color palettes.

Because it reads heat, thermal works in total darkness and in daylight. It sees through smoke, dust, light fog, light rain and many kinds of camouflage and foliage. Mitchell has spotted animals through heavy mist with thermal when night vision would not see past about 10 yards. It does not see through glass or water, because those surfaces block or reflect long wave infrared. Point a thermal at a window and you mostly see a reflection of your own heat.

Thermal Specs That Matter

Sensor resolution drives image detail. Our thermal scope guide calls a 384 sensor adequate for coyotes and pigs at moderate range, a 640 sensor the working standard for serious hunters, and a 1280 sensor the flagship.

Pixel pitch, measured in microns, affects how much magnification you get from a given lens. Smaller, like 12 microns, generally means more magnification.

NETD, measured in millikelvins, tells you how small a temperature difference the sensor can separate. Lower is better, and 15 mK or less is excellent, especially in humid weather.

Refresh rate of 50 to 60 Hz keeps the image smooth when animals or the shooter move.

Digital zoom never adds detail. It only enlarges pixels, so buy the resolution you need.

Field of view is the tradeoff nobody escapes. Mitchell hunts mostly inside 100 yards and often stalks within 50 yards of groups of pigs, so he wants the widest view he can get. A coyote hunter shooting farther may do better with a 640 sensor and at least 3X base magnification.

Fusion: Night Vision and Thermal Together

Fusion devices blend an image intensifier and a thermal sensor in one housing. You get night vision’s detail and depth plus thermal’s ability to make warm targets stand out, and most fusion units let you run either mode alone or both together. Military fusion goggles are expensive, but the idea is spreading. Several civilian hunting optics now pair a thermal core with a digital day and night camera, such as the unit in our DNT ThermNight TNC635R review. A cheaper route is a bridge that puts night vision in front of one eye and thermal in front of the other, covered in our Symbiote night vision and thermal bridge review.

Which Is Better for Hunting?

For most night hunters, thermal is the better first purchase. Hogs and coyotes are warm, the ground at night is cooler, and a thermal monocular lets you scan a field and find animals in seconds, even in tall grass or bedded in thick cover. Mitchell does most of his hunting at night for coyotes and pigs, and thermal is the reason it works. He has run an InfiRay RH25 V2 on his helmet to stalk wild pigs.

The tradeoff is identification. A small thermal sensor can turn animals into blobs at distance, so many hunters scan with a thermal monocular and shoot with a higher resolution thermal scope. Our Vortex Veil 400 review describes exactly that split, with the handheld doing detection and a scope handling positive ID. Check your state’s rules first, because night hunting with night vision or thermal is regulated differently state to state.

Which Is Better for Home Defense?

Inside a home, identification is everything. Night vision is generally the better tool for moving through a house, because it shows faces, hands and objects with natural detail, it has a wider field of view for tight spaces, and it works through windows. It may still need an infrared illuminator in a dark interior room. Thermal will show you a warm body behind a couch or in a dark yard, but at close range it can make it harder to tell what someone is holding. Whichever you choose, a quality weapon light remains the baseline for home defense, and you are responsible for identifying your target before you ever press the trigger.

The original version of this article made a point that still holds: for a non-military user, a monocular that can be handheld, head mounted, helmet mounted or weapon mounted is the most flexible first buy. Head mounting keeps both hands free.

How Far Can You See With Night Vision vs Thermal?

Night vision range depends on ambient light and tube quality. Mitchell’s rule of thumb is that a standard Gen 2 tube may let you identify a human-sized target at 100 to 200 yards on a moonless night, and a high-end Gen 3 tube stretches that.

Thermal detection range is usually longer, because the sensor is looking for heat differences, not light. Modern thermal scopes with good lenses and sensors can detect a human or large animal well over 1,000 yards. Recognition, meaning knowing what that warm shape actually is, happens much closer. Terrain, vegetation and temperature all move those numbers.

What Night Vision and Thermal Cost in 2026

Prices span from a few hundred dollars to more than a used truck. These examples come from our own reviews, with the year of the price noted.

Digital night vision scope: the ATN X-Sight 5 without a rangefinder was $795 in our 2026 night vision roundup.

Analog monocular housing: the Nocturn Industries Tanto was $549 for the housing alone, with the tube extra, in our 2025 Tanto review.

Gen 3 clip-on: the Armasight CO-LR listed at $5,600 to $5,900 in our 2025 Armasight CO-LR review.

Entry thermal scope: ATN cut the ThOR 6 Mini 256 from $1,095 to $689, according to the October 2026 update to our ThOR 6 Mini 256 review.

Thermal monocular: the Vortex Veil 400 was $1,499 in our 2026 review.

Multi-sensor thermal scope: the DNT TNC635R carried a $3,160 MSRP in our 2026 review.

As a rule, entry thermal now costs less than entry Gen 3 night vision, while top-end thermal and top-end tubes are both expensive. Mitchell’s take on budget gear is worth repeating: the expensive stuff usually works best, but a budget unit still gets you in the door and gives you a big advantage over the naked eye. Our best thermal monoculars guide has more handheld options.

Export and Legal Notes

Many night vision tubes and thermal devices are export controlled under U.S. law. A U.S. person can generally buy and own them, but taking one out of the country, shipping one abroad, or sharing controlled technical data with a foreign person can require government authorization. Ask the seller how a specific device is classified before you travel with it. State hunting rules on night vision and thermal also vary, so check your state wildlife agency before you hunt with either.

Night Vision vs Thermal FAQ

Is night vision or thermal better?

Neither is better at everything. Thermal is better for detection and scanning, especially for hunting. Night vision is better for identification, navigation and moving through a house.

Can thermal see through walls?

No. Thermal reads surface heat, so it cannot see through walls. It may show heat that has soaked into a wall from a pipe or a heater, but not a person standing on the other side.

Can thermal see through glass?

No. Glass reflects long wave infrared, so a thermal shows a reflection instead of what is behind the window. Night vision can see through glass.

Can thermal see through brush?

Through light brush, grass and fog, often yes. A hog partly hidden by branches or a coyote in tall grass glows against the cooler background. Thick cover still blocks it.

Can you use night vision or thermal during the day?

Thermal, yes. It works around the clock, though sun-warmed rocks, trees and roads clutter the picture until they cool after dark. Analog night vision, no. Bright light can permanently damage the tube, even when the device is off and pointed at the sun. Pinhole caps let you check a tube in daylight, but treat it as a night tool.

Can night vision see in total darkness?

Not by itself. Image intensifiers need some light. In total darkness you need an infrared illuminator, which many digital night vision devices include.

Is digital night vision as good as Gen 3?

For most uses, no. Digital devices are cheaper and record video, but good Gen 3 tubes still offer better low-light performance and less lag, which matters most for walking or shooting under them.

Should I buy night vision or thermal first?

If you hunt hogs or predators, buy thermal first. If your priority is moving at night or home defense, night vision is usually the better first purchase. Many owners eventually own both.

The Bottom Line

Thermal finds things. Night vision helps you see what they are. Pick thermal for detection and scanning, especially for night hunting. Pick night vision for identification, movement and shooting in low light. If you want specific models, our best night vision picks and best thermal scopes are both built from GunsAmerica Digest reviews.

A crash in the night, your heart goes THUMP!
