They used a fishing pole rigged with 65-pound braid and a big treble hook to snag the gator. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe fought him for about an hour on just one fishing pole,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cWe could never get another hook in him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gator finally began to wear down as it surfaced for air. That gave the team a narrow opening. John David Skipper threw a heavy-rope snatch over the animal to gain control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the rope set, the crew eased the alligator toward the boat. \u201cIt was everything we could do to get him in the boat with three people,\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alligator measured 12 feet, 8 inches and weighed a whopping 770 pounds. They also kept the meat, as Alabama regulations allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson credited patience and persistence. He said he and two friends\u2014Skipper and Louis Sullivan\u2014stayed on the river until they had the right angle and the right shot with the treble hook. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also noted the sheer number of gators in the area. Hunting in the Southwest Zone, he said they saw upward of 30 alligators in one night. \u201cThe waterways are overpopulated with alligators,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alabama issues 260 <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-alabama-holding-online-lottery-for-alligator-tags-for-the-2022-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"alabama-hunter-lands-12-foot-770-pound-alligator\" title=\"Alabama Hunter Lands 12-Foot, 770-Pound Alligator\">alligator tags<\/a> statewide each year through a lottery system. Successful applicants can harvest up to two gators, depending on zone rules. Season rules require night-only hunting, specialized capture gear, and check-in for weighing and tagging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson plans to look up recipes before firing up the grill. \u201cI guess so,\u201d he joked when asked if he\u2019ll be cooking gator for the crew. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong><em>*** <a
