According to their report, the pins consistently left microscopic imprints \u2014 \u201cmicrostamps\u201d \u2014 on spent cartridge casings. Even when the stamps weren\u2019t perfect, the DOJ claims partial codes could still be used as investigative leads, similar to partial fingerprints or license plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The report concludes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Microstamped firing pins can reliably mark casings across many firearm models and ammo types.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear and sustained use didn\u2019t fully erase the microstamp data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incomplete stamps could still provide \u201cuseful leads\u201d for prosecutors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-this-means-for-california-gun-owners\">What This Means for California Gun Owners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The groundwork for this policy was laid in 2023, when Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 452, amending <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/federal-judge-blocks-californias-unsafe-handgun-act-no-more-microstamping-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-doj-declares-microstamping-viable\" title=\"California DOJ Declares Microstamping 'Viable'\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"134\">California\u2019s Unsafe Handgun Act<\/a>. Starting January 1, 2028, all new semi-auto handguns sold by licensed dealers in California must be microstamping-enabled \u2014 assuming DOJ also determines the components are commercially available at \u201creasonable prices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not just a state report. If manufacturers decide it\u2019s not worth redesigning pistols to meet California\u2019s unique requirements, it could effectively ban the introduction of new handgun models into the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there\u2019s another elephant in the room: <strong>criminals don\u2019t buy their guns legally<\/strong>. Gang members and drug traffickers aren\u2019t heading into FFLs to pick up a microstamped pistol. This mandate, like so many California policies, is likely to impact only <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/new-study-small-group-of-known-criminals-driving-crime-not-law-abiding-gun-owners\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-doj-declares-microstamping-viable\" title=\"California DOJ Declares Microstamping 'Viable'\">law-abiding gun owners<\/a> while doing little to curb violent crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-next\">What\u2019s Next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This fall, the DOJ will issue performance standards for microstamping components. Early next year, the agency plans to begin licensing entities to produce compliant firing pins and related parts. Unless stopped in court, the microstamping mandate will take effect in 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun owners nationwide should pay attention. California has a history of exporting its gun control experiments to other states. With DOJ now calling microstamping \u201cviable,\u201d anti-gun lawmakers elsewhere may try to replicate the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"
