Rolling Stone is a high quality rag, for sure. Earlier this week, they told us how to beat the NRA<\/a>. Now Kristen Gwynne <\/a>is out to make sure the populace knows just how dangerous guns can be. Five guns to be specific. So\u2014inquiring minds want to know\u2014what are the five most dangerous guns in America<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s begin with Gwynne\u2019s premise. \u201cContrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the Editor-in-Chief of GunsAmerica, I take issue with anyone who claims all guns are created equal. But I\u2019ll let that slide.\u00a0 Gwynne was about to tell us about the most dangerous guns.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsing firearm trace data from the ATF, as well as FBI homicide records, we determined the types of guns most often recovered from crime scenes and\/or used in murders.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wait.\u00a0 Firearms types<\/em>?\u00a0 It’s bush-league pshyc-out stuff.\u00a0 The title clearly said The Five Most Dangerous Guns.<\/p>\n

#1 Pistols<\/h2>\n

\u201cPopular among handgun-owners, pistols are defined by their built-in barrel and short stock.\u201d This is some good information.\u00a0 Pistols have built in barrels and short stocks. Pistols are popular with handgun-owners.\u00a0 I\u2019ll let Gwynne in on a well-kept secret that she completely missed; pistols are even more popular with pistol owners.<\/p>\n

Before you question the integrity of Gwynne\u2019s investigative approach, consider this.\u00a0 She spent at least enough time on Wikipedia to procure this gem: \u201cOne of the most popular pistols is the Glock, a short-recoil operated, semi-automatic pistol produced by Glock Ges.m.b.H. in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria. Glocks comprise 65 percent of the market share of handguns for United States law enforcement agencies and are also frequently used by international law-enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not implying that GLOCKs are responsible for murders.\u00a0 It was Gwynne that chose to juxtapose the data on homicide and the popularity of GLOCKs with law enforcement.<\/p>\n

#2 Revolvers<\/h2>\n

In case you\u2019ve never seen a gun, Gwynne offers an explanation of intricate firearms nomenclature. \u201cRevolvers,\u201d Gwynne notes, \u201cnamed for their rotating chambered cylinder, placed second in the ATF’s ranking of guns found at crime scenes\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get confused by the rotation of a simple cylinder, firearms noobs.\u00a0 Stick with Gwynne.\u00a0 She knows her guns. \u201cSome grenade launchers, shotguns, and rifles also have rotating barrels[sic], but the term “revolver” is generally used to describe handguns.”<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been dying to get my hands on a rifle with rotating barrels.<\/p>\n

\u00a0#3 Rifles<\/h2>\n

\u201cPulling the trigger of a rifle fires one projectile at the intended target, as opposed to the shotgun’s ability to spray. According to FBI latest publicly available homicide records, in 2012 rifles were used to murder more than 320 people.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 320 people?\u00a0 How many<\/em> more? By God, the number could be astronomical?\u00a0 Is it millions<\/em>?\u00a0 Tens of millions?<\/p>\n

322.<\/p>\n

Whew.\u00a0 Fists killed 678.\u00a0 Blunt objects killed 518.\u00a0 No doubt those blunt objects were the short stocks on Gwynne\u2019s pistols.\u00a0 Many, if not all, of those 678 people beaten to death were beaten by fists that were holding guns.\u00a0 That\u2019s how dangerous these things are.<\/p>\n

Sorry.\u00a0 I was so swayed by the insight of the Rolling Stone piece that I got off track.\u00a0 I\u2019m back now.\u00a0 And I\u2019m still learning. Look what Gwynne has to say about the origin of long guns.<\/p>\n

\u201cRifles were created to improve the accuracy of smoothbore muskets, for which the musket ball was often an [sic] bad fit due to manufacturing complications. Accurate and easy-to-aim, rifles are now the most common hunting weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musket ball manufacturing complications?\u00a0 Note to Rolling Stone: that would make a great band name.<\/p>\n

#4 Shotguns<\/h2>\n

Gwynne looses me with her technical understanding of shotguns.\u00a0 After offering up more on how a shotgun sprays, she notes, \u201cthe explosive that creates the energy to fire the gun occurs in the fixed shell of a shotgun rather than the metallic cartridge of a rifle.\u201d The fixed shell.\u00a0 It must have been broke and she done fixed it, as they say in the parlance of the South.<\/p>\n

So there we have it.\u00a0 Pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns.\u00a0 Did she miss anything?\u00a0 The title promises five, so she has to fill it out.\u00a0 Is there a fifth type? Yes.<\/p>\n

#5 The derringer<\/h2>\n

One of the most deadly machines known to man, the derringer remains a popular way to carry two deadly rounds hidden beneath the crinoline of your hoopskirt.<\/p>\n

Rolling Stone. Time well spent.<\/h2>\n

Is there a light at the end of Gwynne\u2019s tunnel of exhaustively investigated hoplophobia?\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 After spending so much time on Wikipedia, I think Gwynne might be coming around.\u00a0 The article\u2019s conclusion is almost an apology for the very real fact that \u201chigh-capacity-magazine assault weapons\u201d are not as evil as some would like to portray.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile high-capacity-magazine assault weapons have bee [sic]\u00a0linked to large numnber [sic] of mass shootings over the past 30 years, varying definitions of ‘assault’ rifles make comprehensive information difficult to access. We do know, however, that assault weapons \u2014 loosely categorized as semi-automatic, rapid-fire weapons designed for combat use \u2014 are used in a small minority of homicides and other gun crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

We can\u2019t know how deadly these guns are because we can\u2019t access any comprehensive information.\u00a0 It is just too difficult.\u00a0 The varying definitions form an impenetrable wall.\u00a0 I\u2019ve tried to figure out what a high-capacity-magazine assault weapon is, and it is futile.\u00a0 Yet criminology professors, writing in the journal \u201cHomicide Studies,\u201d <\/a>determined that \u201cassault weapons\u201d were present in only 24.6% of these shootings.\u00a0 It is understandable that Gwynne wouldn\u2019t have access to such information, though.\u00a0 I had to click on two whole links to access an actual academic study published in a peer-reviewed journal.\u00a0 That is a stark number of clicks.<\/p>\n

What did Gwynne miss?<\/h3>\n

Let\u2019s help Gwynne keep up this level of investigative journalism.\u00a0 What would you suggest?\u00a0 I can see several glaring gaps in this list.\u00a0 I mean why stop at five types of guns?\u00a0 She\u2019s completely ignored the dangers of Punt Guns.\u00a0 There\u2019s no mention whatsoever of Starter Pistols.\u00a0 Despite the long trail of bloody corpses, Gwynne\u2019s given a pass to Nerf.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
