Family road trips, cross-country flights, or quick weekend getaways. But for <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ep-49-should-i-shoot-a-concealed-carry-fit\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"do-you-carry-in-gun-free-zones\" title=\"Do You Carry in Gun-Free Zones?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"250\">concealed carriers<\/a>, summer travel also brings a familiar knot in the stomach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you do when your route takes you through a gun-free zone\u2014or worse, into a state that treats your permit like a parking ticket from Mars?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not asking anyone to answer out loud. This is one of those private, self-reflective questions. No reciprocity. They are the kind of jurisdictions that have made it clear: if you\u2019re caught, the law will come down hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, criminals couldn\u2019t care less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take what just happened in Manhattan, for example. A 27-year-old gunman, Shane Devon Tamura, drove all the way from <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/las-vegas-woman-shoots-stalker-chest\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"do-you-carry-in-gun-free-zones\" title=\"Do You Carry in Gun-Free Zones?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"249\">Las Vegas<\/a> and murdered four people in a Park Avenue skyscraper\u2014NYC\u2019s deadliest shooting in 25 years. This is a city layered with restrictions, permits, and gun-free zones, and none of it stopped him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/new-york-city-midtown-manhattan-shooting-07-28-25\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"do-you-carry-in-gun-free-zones\" title=\"Do You Carry in Gun-Free Zones?\"><em>CNN<\/em> reported<\/a> that Tamura even left a suicide note citing grievances with the NFL and saying he suffered from CTE. Tragically, one of the victims was a 36-year-old NYPD officer, a husband and father of two with a third child on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun-free zones didn\u2019t disarm a man determined to kill. They just made sure law-abiding citizens were unarmed when it counted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-summer-travel-dilemma\">The Summer Travel Dilemma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever taken a family road trip across state lines, you\u2019ve probably wrestled with this. You can follow the law to the letter: unload, lock, separate ammo, route your trip to avoid trouble spots. That\u2019s the smart, legal, safest-in-the-eyes-of-the-state path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2019s that other thought that creeps in, especially if you\u2019re traveling with your spouse or kids:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What happens if danger finds me in one of these \u201csafe\u201d zones?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when the old saying comes whispering: \u201cBetter to be judged by twelve than carried by six.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be clear\u2014this column isn\u2019t telling anyone to break the law. I\u2019m not your lawyer, and the penalties for carrying where it\u2019s forbidden can wreck your life. The &#8220;safest&#8221; path legally is always to follow the law of the land, even when it\u2019s absurdly stacked against your safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is also real life. If you\u2019re driving I-95 and need gas at 11 p.m. in Newark, or walking a few blocks to your hotel in Manhattan, does the law make you safer\u2014or just make you a softer target?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every carrier eventually confronts this internal debate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is my life worth trusting to a patchwork of laws that change at the state line?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I detour, disarm, and hope nothing happens?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or do I quietly prioritize personal safety, knowing the legal risk?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, you don\u2019t answer this on Twitter or in a forum. You answer it to yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-patchwork-that-punishes-the-lawful\">A Patchwork That Punishes the Lawful<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>America\u2019s concealed carry system is a checkerboard of contradictions. Fifty states, fifty definitions of \u201clegal,\u201d and plenty of politicians who seem more interested in disarming the responsible than stopping the dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As summer travel season rolls on, each of us has to quietly decide where our personal line is. For some, the law is absolute. For others, personal safety outweighs legal safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no universal answer. There\u2019s just the reality that criminals don\u2019t honor state lines\u2014and neither does danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong><em>*** <a
