Prosecutors say 15-year-old Marjay Dotson was killed, and 14-year-old Jeremy Herred remains hospitalized with serious injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chicago lifeguard charged in shooting of 2 teens tied to 2023 shooting of dogs\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1EFye3BlOmk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leto, a Marine veteran and concealed carry license holder, is accused of purposely targeting the boys. His defense attorney claims he acted in self-defense after the teens threatened him and said they were going to steal his bike. Prosecutors counter that he violated Park District policy by bringing a firearm onto the grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further investigation by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-lifeguard-charged-in-deadly-shooting-of-teen\" title=\"Chicago Lifeguard Charged in Deadly Shooting of Teen\">CBS News Chicago<\/a><\/em> revealed that this is not Leto\u2019s first shooting incident. Her surviving dog, Skokie, has undergone multiple surgeries to reconstruct his paws and still struggles to walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe pointed the gun right at me that day,\u201d Michaels told <em>CBS News Chicago<\/em>. Leto was not <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/father-shoots-dog-that-mauled-daughter-charged-with-animal-cruelty\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-lifeguard-charged-in-deadly-shooting-of-teen\" title=\"Chicago Lifeguard Charged in Deadly Shooting of Teen\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"351\">charged in the dog shooting<\/a> after claiming he felt threatened. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Months later, he was hired as a lifeguard by the Park District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video shows what led up to Douglass Park shooting of 2 teens\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tLoDeaYH1wk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michaels expressed outrage upon learning of the teen shooting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA crazy person \u2013 don\u2019t you think there\u2019s something wrong with somebody who keeps shooting people and dogs?\u201d she told the station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the lack of charges in the 2023 incident, the shooting did not appear on Leto\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/kim-kardashian-tweets-on-texas-shooting-background-checks-sparks-heated-twitter-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-lifeguard-charged-in-deadly-shooting-of-teen\" title=\"Chicago Lifeguard Charged in Deadly Shooting of Teen\">background check<\/a> when he was employed by the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cook County State\u2019s Attorney\u2019s Office has not yet commented on the previous dog shooting case.
