If you live in Illinois, buckle up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtongunlaw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-court-authorizes-gun-confiscation\" title=\"Illinois Court Authorizes Gun Confiscation?\">Washington Gun Law<\/a>\u2019s William Kirk just broke down a bombshell ruling in the case <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoiscourts.gov\/top-level-opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-court-authorizes-gun-confiscation\" title=\"Illinois Court Authorizes Gun Confiscation?\">Reece v. Thousands of Illinois residents lawfully purchased <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/firearms\/rifles\/semi-auto\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-court-authorizes-gun-confiscation\" title=\"Illinois Court Authorizes Gun Confiscation?\">semi-automatic rifles<\/a> during that time. Fast forward to 2025, and at least one Illinois court now says: tough luck. You can\u2019t legally possess that gun anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s right. The court ruled that if you bought your rifle during that one-week window, you\u2019re out of luck unless it was in your hands before January 10, 2023\u2014and registered by January 1, 2024. Missed those dates? The state says you don\u2019t have a legal leg to stand on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s call it what it is: backdoor confiscation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William Kirk points out that while the court didn\u2019t <em>technically<\/em> order confiscation, it gave two choices\u2014store your firearm out of state or get rid of it. Instead, he relied on procedural doctrines like equitable estoppel and justifiable reliance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translation: he argued it\u2019s not fair to change the rules mid-game. The court shrugged and said fairness isn\u2019t the issue\u2014you should\u2019ve known the injunction could vanish at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kicker? This ruling might be unpublished, but you can bet anti-gun politicians will use it as <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/ammo\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-court-authorizes-gun-confiscation\" title=\"Illinois Court Authorizes Gun Confiscation?\">ammo<\/a>. That registry is a roadmap to your front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirk lays it out plainly: &#8220;If you legally purchased something, and the state later says you can\u2019t own it, and forces you to get rid of it\u2014that\u2019s confiscation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t just an Illinois problem. It\u2019s a test run for how far courts will let governments go in criminalizing normal, lawful gun ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fight isn\u2019t over.
