Gone are the days of a presidential administration welding the bureau as a hammer against an industry it politically disfavored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ATF is returning to its role to combat violent crime and illegal firearm trafficking and assisting the firearm industry to remain in compliance with laws and regulations governing the lawful sale of firearms in the United States. It couldn\u2019t come a moment too soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration, through the Department of Justice (DOJ),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/protecting-second-amendment-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\"><strong>announced in February<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;that the Biden-era \u201cZero Tolerance\u201d policy was dead. The Department of Justice (DOJ)&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-praises-atf-announcement-eliminating-zero-tolerance-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">followed that up<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;with an announcement that several policies were under review and \u201cZero Tolerance\u201d was eliminated. Acting ATF Director Daniel Driscoll&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/news\/press-releases\/atf-updates-national-policy-federal-firearm-licensee-inspections-to-promote-fairness-consistency-and-public-safety\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">followed<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;that up before the Memorial Day holiday weekend with a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/firearms\/docs\/report\/atfo53701hfederalfirearmsadministrativeactionpolicyapril2025pdf\/download\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">new policy<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;that will \u201cpromote fairness, consistency, and public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-focus\">New Focus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis update is about getting it right and making sure we\u2019re focused on public safety,\u201d ATF Acting Director Driscoll said in a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/news\/press-releases\/atf-updates-national-policy-federal-firearm-licensee-inspections-to-promote-fairness-consistency-and-public-safety\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">press release<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cUnder the previous policy, some licensees were being penalized for simple mistakes such as, forgetting to put their license number on forms. This new guidance gives our investigators the discretion to tell the difference between an honest mistake and a real threat to public safety. Law-abiding dealers deserve a system that treats them fairly, not like suspects. They are our partners and the first line of defense in our efforts to combat firearms trafficking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a change that NSSF has been seeking for years. NSSF noted the \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/atf-report-shows-imperative-of-trumps-decision-to-ditch-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">blistering pace<\/a><\/strong>\u201d of Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) who faced revocations or simply surrendered their licenses under pressure by the Biden administration. NSSF was vocal in its criticisms of the Biden administration\u2019s politicization of the ATF to attack the firearm industry. That started with the President Joe Biden calling firearm manufacturers \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/called-industry-enemy\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">the enemy<\/a><\/strong>\u201d from the debate stage during his run for office and continued unabated throughout his four years in office. That included the ATF, under the leadership of Director Steven Dettelbach,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/atfs-tiahrt-violation-enables-media-name-and-shame-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">violating the Tiahrt Amendment<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;to release protected firearm trace data to the Brady Center and USA Today to facilitate a politically-driven \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/why-is-atf-repeatedly-violating-firearm-trace-data-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">name and shame<\/a><\/strong>\u201d smear campaign against firearm retailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t always this way. Former Acting Director Michael Sullivan warned that President Biden would pursue a punitive strategy to target the firearm industry when he nominated David Chipman, a former gun control lobbyist, to head up the bureau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-springfield-armory-trp-4-25-cc-review-a-bobtail-1911-nbsp\">SEE ALSO:<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/springfield-armory-trp-4-25-cc-review-a-bobtail-1911\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\"> Springfield Armory TRP 4.25\u201d CC Review: A Bobtail 1911&nbsp;<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe bureau doesn\u2019t exist to diminish constitutionally guaranteed rights, but instead to combat violent crime and ensure the industry and gun owners are able to freely exercise their rights within the laws enacted by Congress,\u201d Sullivan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/biden-atf-nominee-compromise-agency-mission-michael-sullivan\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\"><strong>wrote in a Fox News column<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cATF\u2019s reputation is dependent on remaining an apolitical, unbiased and fair law enforcement and regulatory agency.\u202fThat fair treatment and respect for fundamental liberties begins at the top. The agents and inspectors in the field deserve nothing less, and the American public \u2013 whether gun owners or not \u2013 deserve equal treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, it wasn\u2019t just the ATF that the Biden administration weaponized against the firearm industry. It was nearly every facet of government that was turned against the firearm and <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/ammo\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\"><strong>ammunition<\/strong><\/a> manufacturers, distributors, exporters and importers. The Biden administration\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/president-bidens-whole-of-government-gun-control-crusade-confronts-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">weaponized<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the Commerce Department\u2019s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) to \u201cpause\u201d firearm and ammunition exports to review export policies. The \u201c90-day pause\u201d lasted more than six months before an Interim Final Rule was established to hobble exports. President <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"538\" href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/should-trump-disband-bidens-office-of-gun-violence-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\"><strong>Biden established a White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention<\/strong><\/a> that didn\u2019t focus on the criminal misuse of firearms. Staffed by gun control lobbyists, it only attacked the lawful sale of firearms. NSSF was the first to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-urges-president-elect-trump-to-disband-white-house-office-of-gun-violence-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">urge<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0President Donald Trump to do away with the office and he\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/white-house-gun-violence-prevention-website-offline-2018801\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">scrubbed it<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0when he stepped back into The White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-front-line-of-defense\">Front Line of Defense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ATF\u2019s announcement on Friday is a welcome one. NSSF is proud to partner with ATF to prevent firearms from being obtained or possessed by those who should never have their hands on them. That includes the partner programs of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nssfrealsolutions.org\/programs\/dont-lie-for-the-other-guy\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">Don\u2019t Lie for the Other Guy<sup>TM<\/sup><\/a><\/strong>, which warns the public that lying on the ATF\u2019s background check form to buy a gun for someone else who cannot buy on their own, or doesn\u2019t want to be associated with sale of the firearm, is a serious federal crime that carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. NSSF also partners with ATF for\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nssfrealsolutions.org\/programs\/operation-secure-store\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">Operation Secure Store<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to deter and prevent \u201csmash-and-grab\u201d burglaries and robberies of firearm retailers. Those criminals are a menace to communities and NSSF matches ATF <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"539\" href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-arizona-10000-reward-information-poachers-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\"><strong>reward offers for information leading<\/strong><\/a> to the conviction of those criminals and recovery of the stolen firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, it is often the firearm retailer that is the front-line defense to prevent firearms from being illegally straw purchased and illegally trafficked. Peter Forcelli, former ATF executive who was also one of the Fast and Furious whistleblowers and authored a book of the experience titled&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Deadly-Path-Operation-Furious-Lawyers\/dp\/B0CCMMQKCQ\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">The Deadly Path<\/a><\/strong>, called for these reforms the ATF is undertaking. He said firearm retailers \u2013 and the industry at large \u2013 are \u201cindispensable partners\u201d in the fight against crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDealers are often the first line of defense to help identify suspicious purchases and flag possible trafficking organizations,\u201d Forcelli&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myjournalcourier.com\/opinion\/article\/time-reform-revitalize-atf-peter-j-forcelli-19962325.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-ditches-zero-tolerance-turns-page-to-new-era\" title=\"ATF Ditches \u2018Zero Tolerance,\u2019 Turns Page to New Era\">wrote in an opinion column<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cA partnership approach with the firearms industry is a vital component in keeping guns away from the wrong people, and it\u2019s time for them to take that approach more seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new policy announced by the ATF shows that a more serious and sober approach is now taking hold.
