Taylor\u2019s &amp; Company has revived that concept for the modern era by chambering the TC73 in 9mm, one of the most common handgun cartridges today. This makes logistical sense for today\u2019s shooters, particularly those who already stockpile 9mm for carry pistols, home defense, or training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSC01007-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Taylor&#x27;s &amp; Company 1873 TC73 full rifle\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The TC73 is a beautiful and accurate replica of the classic 1873 Winchester, the rifle sometimes referred to as \u201cthe gun that won the west!\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rifle holds 10 rounds in a tubular magazine and feeds through a traditional side-loading gate. Despite 9mm being a rimless cartridge, feeding was smooth and consistent during testing. More on that below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-build-quality-and-craftsmanship\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build Quality and Craftsmanship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taylor\u2019s is known for their attention to detail, and the TC73 is no exception. Unlike many <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/the-best-modern-combat-proven-handguns-shotguns-and-rifles\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"taylors-company-1873-tc73-review-9mm-lever-action\" title=\"Taylor's TC73 Review: 9mm 1873 Lever Action\">modern firearms<\/a>, the TC73 contains no MIM (metal injection molded) parts. Every component is machined from premium steel, and Taylor\u2019s in-house gunsmiths tune the final assembly. The result is an action that is incredibly smooth, what they call \u201cTaylor Tuned\u201d, and a crisp trigger that measured around three pounds on my sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSC01014-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Taylor&#x27;s &amp; Company 1873 TC73 reciever\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The TC73 features the traditional lever lock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receiver features genuine <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/a-way-to-color-case-harden-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"taylors-company-1873-tc73-review-9mm-lever-action\" title=\"Taylor's TC73 Review: 9mm 1873 Lever Action\">case color hardening<\/a>, not a simulated finish. The barrel is deep-blued, and both the forearm and buttstock are American walnut with a rich, attractive grain that rivals much more expensive rifles. Fit and finish throughout the rifle are excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-suppressor-compatibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suppressor Compatibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a nod to modern shooting preferences, the TC73 features a threaded barrel (5\/8\u00d724) concealed by a knurled thread protector. Taylor\u2019s also offers a smooth thread cap for those who prefer a more traditional aesthetic, and this version is required for cowboy action shooting competition approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSC01010-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Taylor&#x27;s &amp; Company 1873 has a blued barrel\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The tubular magazine holds 10 rounds of 9mm!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppressing this rifle makes practical sense. With an 18-inch barrel, the rifle burns most of the powder before the bullet exits the muzzle, resulting in a report that is already surprisingly mild. A small suppressor could make this one of the quietest manually-operated rifles available, especially when paired with subsonic 9mm ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sight-system-and-controls\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sight System and Controls<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sighting system is well-executed. The rifle features a traditional white bead front sight and a semi-buckhorn rear sight adjustable for both windage and elevation. These features aren\u2019t just cosmetic, they\u2019re functional and contribute to the rifle\u2019s heritage appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSC01015-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Taylor&#x27;s &amp; Company 1873 TC73 (13)\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The walnut stock is beautiful as is the real case color hardening.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-ammunition-compatibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ammunition Compatibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The big question with any tubular magazine firing rimless ammunition is safety and reliability. Taylor\u2019s has addressed this head-on. The owner\u2019s manual warns against only one specific load, a loading, which features a sharp, pointed tip. Otherwise, traditional FMJ, JHP, flat-point, and even handloads all ran without issue in my testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GunsAmerica-G9-Woodsman-Bullets-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Example of ammo not to shoot in TC73\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This is an example of a bullet shape that you would want to avoid in the TC73\u2019s tubular magazine. Hollow points, flat nosed, and round nosed ball ammo are all fine. Nothing with a sharp, pointed tip that could ignite a primer should be used!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I ran a variety of \u201ccandy cane\u201d loads, mixing different projectile weights and profiles, to see if the rifle would stumble. It didn\u2019t. Everything from 115gr FMJ to 147gr flat nose to defensive hollow points cycled smoothly and fired without issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-velocity-gains-from-rifle-barrel\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Velocity Gains from Rifle Barrel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using a Garmin Zero chronograph, I tested the velocity of Nosler ASP 9mm defensive ammunition through both the TC73\u2019s 18-inch barrel and Taylor\u2019s matching 1873 Single Action revolver with a 5.5-inch barrel. The results were telling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Revolver (5.5\u2033)<\/strong>: Avg. ~1165 fps<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rifle (18\u2033)<\/strong>: Avg. ~1360 fps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a ~200 fps bump in velocity, enough to enhance terminal performance while remaining extremely manageable in terms of recoil. It\u2019s highly shootable, extremely practical, and likely to turn heads at any range. It\u2019s also an excellent choice for newer shooters who may be recoil-sensitive or want to simplify logistics by sticking to one caliber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-a-matching-sidearm\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Matching Sidearm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the focus of my review is the rifle, it\u2019s worth mentioning the companion revolver Taylor\u2019s offers, a 9mm-chambered 1873 Single Action Army clone. Taylors &amp; Co offer several variations and barrel lengths of the TC-9 revolver. The one featured in my video sports a 5.5-inch barrel, traditional four-click action, and black checkered Navy grips. Like the rifle, it\u2019s beautifully finished, accurate, and surprisingly affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DSC01020-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Taylor&#x27;s &amp; Company 1873 TC9 Revolver\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Taylors &amp; Co TC-9 uses no moon clips and is a very traditionally built 1873 clone of the Colt Single Action Army.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also a true single-action, meaning there\u2019s no transfer bar or modern safety system.
