{"id":214654,"date":"2025-04-02T13:08:23","date_gmt":"2025-04-02T18:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=214654"},"modified":"2025-10-22T06:23:51","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T11:23:51","slug":"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some lawmakers have finally had enough of states trying to tax the Second Amendment out of existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New bills in both the U.S. House and Senate aim to block states from slapping \u201csin taxes\u201d on firearms and <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/ammo\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\">ammunition<\/a>\u2014fees that gun control politicians are increasingly using to punish law-abiding gun owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Freedom from Unfair Gun Taxes Act<\/em> was introduced by Reps. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/2442?s=1&amp;r=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\">in the House<\/a>, and by Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/1169?s=1&amp;r=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\">in the Senate<\/a>. If passed, it would prevent states from imposing excise taxes on gun and ammo sales that are used to <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/new-bill-to-block-medicaid-funds-for-anti-gun-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"804\">fund anti-gun programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>Table of contents<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-taxing-a-right-is-still-wrong\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\" data-level=\"2\">Taxing a Right Is Still Wrong<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-we-already-pay-plenty\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\" data-level=\"2\">We Already Pay Plenty<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-protecting-the-second\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\" data-level=\"2\">Protecting the Second<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-taxing-a-right-is-still-wrong\"><strong>Taxing a Right Is Still Wrong<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStates that are hostile to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/firearms\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\">firearm industry<\/a> and Second Amendment freedoms have abused their ability to levy taxes on the sale of firearms and ammunition as a \u2018sin tax.\u2019 Exercising a right \u2013 whether it is your First Amendment freedoms, Second Amendment or Fourth or Fifth Amendment freedoms \u2013 is not a sin,\u201d said Larry Keane, NSSF Senior VP and General Counsel, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-commends-bicameral-bills-to-halt-state-excise-taxes-on-firearms\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\">press release<\/a> obtained by GunsAmerica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is like the unconstitutional poll taxes that were struck down in 1966,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/pregnant-wife-dark-night-burglary-suspect-armed-husband\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\">Pregnant Wife, Dark Night, Burglary Suspect, Armed Husband\u2026<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, California adds an 11% excise tax on guns, parts, and ammo. Colorado is set to follow suit with a 6.5% tax starting April 1, 2025. Other states like Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, and Washington are also looking to cash in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the kicker\u2014these taxes don\u2019t touch criminals. DOJ data shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/inmate-survey-criminals-break-the-law-to-obtain-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\">90% of criminals<\/a> get their firearms illegally. These taxes land squarely on the backs of legal, responsible gun owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-we-already-pay-plenty\"><strong>We Already Pay Plenty<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun makers already pay a hefty federal excise tax\u201410\u201311%\u2014that goes directly to conservation, public land access, range development, and hunter education via the Pittman-Robertson Act. That system has raised over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-celebrates-1-3-billion-to-states-for-wildlife-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\">$29 billion <\/a>since 1937 and actually supports lawful gun use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state-level taxes? They <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/suspicions-confirmed-taxpayer-dollars-funded-gun-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-moves-to-end-sin-taxes-on-2a-rights\" title=\"Congress Moves to End Sin Taxes on 2A Rights\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"803\">fund gun control<\/a>. That\u2019s the opposite of what responsible gun ownership is about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-protecting-the-second\"><strong>Protecting the Second<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NSSF applauds Reps. Issa and Hudson and Sen. Risch for taking a stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis legislation is about principle,\u201d Keane said. \u201cNo American should be taxed for exercising a constitutional right\u2014especially not to fund efforts that try to take that right away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As more states look to demonize lawful gun ownership through punitive taxes, this bill could be a critical line in the sand.
