Adjustable vs Fixed Explained"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An adjustable gas block lets you turn down how much gas reaches your AR&#8217;s bolt carrier. A fixed block sends the same amount every shot, and most factory rifles are set up a little overgassed so they run on anything. Turn the gas down and the rifle cycles softer, throws less gas back in your face behind a suppressor, and beats up its parts less. What it cannot do is add gas. If your rifle is undergassed, the hole in the barrel is the problem, not the block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people with a plain defensive carbine do not need one. If you shoot suppressed, tune for one load, or want a softer recoil impulse, you probably do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gas block is a critical part of an AR15\u2019s operating system. There are two types: non-adjustable and adjustable. Both a fixed gas block and an adjustable block perform the same function. The difference between the two is that the adjustable block can be, you guessed it, adjusted. Your <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/brand\/ar15\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"what-is-an-adjustable-gas-block\" title=\"What Does an Adjustable Gas Block Do? Adjustable vs Fixed Explained\">AR15<\/a> likely came from the factory with a fixed gas block. You won\u2019t need to swap it for an adjustable gas block unless you decide to shoot suppressed, reduce the barrel length, or shoot a variety or a specific brand of ammo. For a generic click-adjustable block, this is the method Mitchell Graf uses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Install the block and turn it all the way down so it shuts off the gas.<\/li>\n<li>Load one round in a magazine and fire it. The bolt will probably not lock back, and the case may not eject.<\/li>\n<li>Open the block one click, load one round and fire again.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat until the bolt locks open on the empty magazine. Write down that number of clicks. That is the minimum gas your rifle needs.<\/li>\n<li>Open it one more click past that point, so the rifle still runs when it is cold or dirty.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Run the setting with the exact ammo and suppressor you plan to use. Change either one and you may need to tune it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-do-you-need-an-adjustable-gas-block-for-a-suppressor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do You Need an Adjustable Gas Block for a Suppressor?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably not required, but Mitchell Graf would add one. A direct impingement AR is set up to cycle reliably unsuppressed. Add a suppressor and you add back pressure, so most rifles end up overgassed. They usually still run. The cost shows up elsewhere:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More gas and carbon blown back into the action and into your face.<\/li>\n<li>Faster bolt speed, which can keep the bolt from locking back on an empty magazine.<\/li>\n<li>Harder, more violent cycling, more felt recoil and more wear on the operating parts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An adjustable block is usually the cheapest way to fix that. Instead of swapping buffer weights to match a carrier, you turn the gas down until the rifle runs reliably without the extra blowback. It fits over a small hole on the top of the barrel. When a round is fired, some of the gas pushing the bullet out of the barrel is channeled via the hole in the barrel, into the gas block, and then down the gas tube to the upper receiver. The gas pushes against the bolt carrier group, to extract and eject the spent cartridge case, cock the hammer, and load a new cartridge. A standard gas block allows a fixed amount of gas to flow from the barrel to the gas tube. Note the dimple in the barrel, where the set screw in the gas block engages with the barrel when attached.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pinned\">Pinned <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three ways a gas block attaches to an AR15 barrel: pinned to the barrel, set screws, or clamped on. An example of a pinned gas block is the mil-spec A2 front sight. Many Military-issue rifles and carbines use this triangle-shaped sight. Pinning a gas block to the barrel is a very strong method of attaching the gas block. The barrel is modified when the gas block is pinned to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-set-screws\">Set screws<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low-profile gas blocks, both fixed and adjustable, are either pinned in place or use set screws or a combination of both. Typically two set screws pull the gas block into the barrel and tighten up against the bottom barrel. Be aware that the screws can loosen after shooting so use red Loctite and torque the screws down at 25 to 30 in.-lb. Your bent factory gas tube will not work with a Riflespeed gas block.<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clamp-on-gas-blocks\">Clamp-on gas blocks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clamp-on gas blocks typically use a pair of screws and, as the name implies, clamp the gas block to the barrel without modifying or marring the barrel. On my defense rifle, I use a fixed gas block. I know the rifle will function with any ammo I feed it. I\u2019d suggest an adjustable gas block if you are fine-tuning your rifle for a specific load be it for hunting or competition. I\u2019d also recommend an adjustable gas block if you run a suppressor. Finally, if you want to reduce some felt recoil, an adjustable gas block is the way to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-faq\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-does-an-adjustable-gas-block-do\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does an adjustable gas block do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It lets you reduce the amount of gas that flows from the barrel to the bolt carrier. That softens cycling, cuts suppressor blowback and can reduce wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-is-an-adjustable-gas-block-better-than-a-fixed-one\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is an adjustable gas block better than a fixed one?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not for every rifle. A fixed block is simple and runs on almost any ammo. An adjustable block is better when you shoot suppressed or tune the rifle to one load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-do-i-need-an-adjustable-gas-block-for-a-suppressor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I need an adjustable gas block for a suppressor?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not always. Most ARs still run suppressed, just overgassed. An adjustable block lets you turn the gas down so the rifle runs cleaner and with less gas in your face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-a-pinned-gas-block\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a pinned gas block?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A gas block held on with pins through the block and the barrel.
